I am all for a forum. I like to use a forum. I like to read a forum. I like to write in a forum. However, the NC forum is a mess. A good forum needs to be somewhat concise, or anyone new to the forum will not know where to post. It can appear to much and too intimidating, and at best the cacher will become a lurker rather than a poster - and more likely, just not come back at all.

The one thing in NC's favour is that users of alternative caching sites are probably the sort of cacher more likely to use a forum, thereby somewhat artificially raising the activity of said forum. In my opinion though, to encourage a newly active NC community (now that there is new ownership), not only do we need to start placing new caches (not cross-listed), but we need to have a better forum.

There will be far better suggestions than mine, but for a starter here's my two cents:

Getting Started
- News and Announcements
- Using the Website
- Site Suggestions & Open Testing (Combined two threads)

Caching Discussion
- Getting Started / Q&A (Combined two threads)
- General Caching Discussion (Combined loads of threads!)
- Bug and Coin Discussion (Combined three threads)
- GPSr Discussion (No need for seperate area of forum with individual threads for each brand)
- Marketplace

Regional Caching
- Cachers meeting Cachers (not sure if this truly warrants its own distinct thread as it stands presently, but if it is to have its own, makes more sense here than in with the general discussion. I would think that an individual cachers meeting cachers thread in each of the following areas would probably make more sense, and be more useful?)
- US (links to subforum, listing individual states/regions as appropriate)
- Europe (links to subforum, listing individual countries/regions as appropriate)
- Australasia
- Other Countries/Regions

General Discussion
- General Discussion (as it presently is)
- Other Caching-Related Games and Activites (does not need its own section of the forum with individual sections)

I'm not suggesting the above is perfect. I am sure it is far from it. But anything is better than the mess that exists presently. More is not always better! With a forum, less is almost always more inviting to the eye, easier to understand, and more likely to generate active discussion in appropriate areas.

A few comments on your suggestions, nick_h_nz...

Seems odd to have a "Getting Started" subforum that isn't under the "Getting Started" main section.

One thing I've always found odd is that I have a general caching related post, it often doesn't fit under the one of the heading in the "Your Adventures In Geocaching!" area, but I end up posting in the "General Discussion" (Just doesn't quite fit anywhere else ) area, which seems odd for most of my caching related stuff to go.  Of course, it may just be how I read and interpret the forum titles.  I like the idea of "General Caching Discussion" and think that perhaps the main "General Discussion" could be "Non-Geocaching Discussion" with "Other Geo-location Games" & "General (Off-Topic) Discussion" (or something like that).

Another thing about the forums - I hope they can be upgraded to allow you to highlight text and then apply formatting to them.  Currently, even if you have text selected and then click on the Bold, Italics, or Underline buttons (for instance), it will put the opening code at the end of your post.  No other forum I use works in this way.

Yeah, the BB code radio buttons completely suck. It's faster to type the code yourself than use them. As you say, no other forum I've ever used puts the opening code at the end of a post like this does.

Hmmmm...my labelling isn't too good there though, is it? I admit I was just snatching titles from the existing (messy) forum, and this has in itself proven a nice example of how messy the forum presently is.

My "Getting Started" main section was meant to be for NC site/NC forum, and the "Getting Started/Q&A" subforum in the "Caching Discussion" main section was more about getting started/q&a about caching in general - rather than the NC site and forum per se.

That is because it is not the way IB was designed. If you want something bolded for example click the 'B' button, type what you want bolded   and then click the 'B' again to close the IB Code.

I'm sure it is working as designed, I just think it would be nice if at, some point, the forums could be updated with functionality that users are accustomed to, today.

Agreed. Just because something is working as it was designed, does not mean change is not worthwhile. Both video and audio cassette tapes work as designed, but very few people still use either. Their (working) designs have been superceded by newer (working) designs. Many design aspects of both the main site and forum are likely working as they were designed - but that alone is not a reason not to change their design.

Another forum issues I've been noticing.  It may have always been this way, but somehow I seem to have become more aware of it - maybe just because of my increase in recent activity, here.

When I'm finished typing my post and hit TAB on my keyboard, I'd think it would highlight either the emoticon bar or, at least, the Quick Post or Preview buttons.  However, the selected area moves all the way to the top left of the screen to the Navicache logo.
