Please charge memberships for premium services. But please don't EVER encourage feelings of divide because some people think they are "true hobbyists" because they help someone get rich off the hobby. The "true hobbyist" is the person who plants caches out there for others to find. The "enabler" in the process is the host of an internet site that allows mass communication between members. I'm glad I found this site that doesn't allow "MO caches." I like the attitudes from the posts I've read, and the acknowledgement that this is a MEMBER sport, and that 3 bucks a month is NOT what makes a member. I pay 3 bucks to get pocket queries, and I don't try to make others think I pay it because I'm trying to "give back." Do the math... Nobody needs "giving back."
I have 5 caches which will be posted here soon, and I do believe that if you keep a happy member base you will grow. Creating a divide in members has historically been the death-knoll for UBB Infopop forums and hobby boards for more than a decade. Some are just learning that. Geocaching is a hobby owned by the hobbyists. Some were fortunate enough to see a financial boom (do the math, it's easy). Ya'll should have no problems making a bit of money FROM the sport. But please don't allow the same snotty brats to pounce on newcomers or act all "godlike" because they toss 3 bucks a month and a few paper-filled micros when other "newcomers" are placing $25 caches. You tell ME who the "true" members who support the hobby are?
This hobby is in its infancy. Some will come along and try to "own" it. Historically, they fail. I hope you keep "membership" and "profit" seperate, because ultimately that's what people want out of a internet service, unless they are infants in the internet with this being their first "online" ingredient to a particular hobby. Then others capitalize of their naivety. I appreciate your honesty thus far!
