The upinyachit group has askd if I would consider taking over active caches in our area that they had placed due to moving to Colorado. I have excepted this and think it's a great idea as well as very responsible of them to have asked. I think others that do not have the time to or can no longer for other reasons check on their caches should also try doing this .

Oh...for the upinyachit group, I responded to your e-mail but it was booted back to me. If you have an updated e-mail you would like to use please send it to me so i can update your account.

For those of you that want a new acount other thatn the one offered by places like Yahoo, you might want to try this link... http://www.fastmail.fm/ they offer free e-mail accounts and it is quite fast. I myself have an account there as well.

Kudos for volunteering!

I'd like to offer to help with those out here by Brockport.

They beat me to a couple of locations I was considering and would be happy to maintain, upgrade or replace missing cahes to keep the west side crowd involved. One of them is 2 miles from home and another is less than 5 and both are prime fishing spots for me so checking on them would be even easier than my own.

Would it be possible to change the owner on the site so they would show up on my cache page? I don't want to steal anyone's thunder but it would make it easier to stay on top of them.

Just let me know if you'd like the help.

I just can't believe how cool Navicacher's really are.  We apreciate all the help and offers from all.  This Email from OURWOODS made my day yesterday.

Hello~! You dont know it, but you guys helped us get hooked on geocaching! Your caches were some of the first we did! Thanks =) I just read on the forums that you have moved to Colorado.. I was wondering if you had plans for your caches still in NY State, and if not would you like me to adopt them? I loved all your placements, they are some of the best in this area (Greece) and I hate to see them turn in GeoTrash. Please let me know.

Here is a good question by cenobite7 too.

We have four caches that need adopted.  Message in a bottle, Casey's Steve Erwin Experience, Cache Jubilee, and Your Boots Were Made For cachin.  Quinn is looking after them now, but I am sure he won't mind. Just let us know which one or one's you would like to adopt.  We would like our name to remain on the cache page, though, if you don't mind.

If cenobite wants to take over the ones closer to Brockport (Cache Jubilee and Steve Irwin) I could pick up Your Boots Were Made for Cachin', and Message In A Bottle, as both are only a few minutes from me.

Adopting caches is a great and I am glad to see this taking place. Like cenobite07 I am not trying to steal anyones thunder, but we ask that when caches are adopted, that we be notified by the original cache owner that this has happened so that we may switch the cache-owners name in the database. This is important so that we (and everyone else) can be kept up to date as to who is responsible for a cache.

I think it is great to adopt caches out instead of letting them go.  It keeps the spirit alive, and some great locations on the map.  I also think it is a good idea if the owner of a cache drops outta sight for someone to maintain a cache.  Maybe there could be some way to determine if a cache is orphaned, so someone in the area can volunteer to adopt it.

How about if Navicache adds to their terms of use a requirement that a cache owner has to update a cache listing at least annually or the cache will be considered abandoned? (Change the frequency or method of indicating that the cache owner is still maintaining the cache to suit your preference.)

Its not a bad idea, but what if it doesn't need updating? perhaps if the database can show if a cache owner has checked the webpage regularly or something.

On the adopting vein, it looks like I may be changing jobs soon, and my monthly trips to oregon will stop, until I move back to the US permanently next year. I have a physical cache listed in Portland, anybody interested in adopting it on a temporary basis until I return to the US?

I'll be happy to take over Steve Irwin and Cache Jubilee.

I was just at Steve Irwin last week checking on it anyway since I was down there for another cache. (I'm waaayyy behind in my online logs... :nono )

I plan to change the notes to reflect that you guys placed them and they were adopted out. You guys will get credit for placing them and Navicache and I will still be able to track them in the database.

PCMedic or Quinn, is it possible to amend the database to reflect two owners?

Just let me know what we need to do and I'll try to hit them one more time before the snow buries them. I fish at the falls in the spring - I wonder what's in there this time of year?

Having a procedure and a standard form to change ownership would be a great idea.  It doesnt have to be fancy, just a record keeping thing to keep  tabs on who has ownership of a cache.  I think keeping good locations active shows a great community spirit.

Ownership tracking should not be a problem as adopted caches would list the new parent (owner) on the cache page.

From the replies to this thread, it would seem to me to be a good idea if a field could be added to the database for secondary owner/contact. this would allow adopted caches to credit the original placer (and allow them to track the cache through their my cache page) it would also be useful for team placed caches where two individual cachers got together to put it there.

Also, this would give a secondary email contact, email can be such a hit and miss thing with some ISPs. I recently shifted my domain hosting and for a few days, no email was received.

In the case of an adopted cache, there is no secondary owner. These are generally the result of the original owner leaving the area (moving) and will no longer be able to maintain the cache. The options are collect the cache box and retire the listing, or find another local geocacher who would like to adopt and continue to maintain the cache. In the later case the individual/team adopting the cache would become the listed owner and rightfully get the benefits (for those that worry about those things) that go along with it.

The secondary email on team caches should not really be needed as most mail servers will continue to try to deliver a piece of mail for days. So even if the recipients server is down, when it comes back online they would then receive the message.
