Quinn had posted a place to get ammo cans for caching.  Does anyone have that info handy?  I also see a new mil-surplus place opened up on Rt 31 just east of Brockport.  Anyone check it out for cache materials, other stuff yet?

I order them right from home at www.cheaperthandirt.com. Quinn has a link to them on Navicache links page. The 50 cal. cans usually average about Ŭ.00 /pc. & of the 3 shipments I've gotten from them, I've not gotten a bad one yet. Shipping is VERY reasonable. 6 cans & Ű.00 shipping from Texas via UPS for a total of about ะ.00. I don't think you can get 6 50 cal. ammo cans for ะ.00 around here. And you don't have to take the time to drive around to see who has any in stock.

Cheaper than Dirt looks like my kind of place.  Might just have to order a few of those ammo cans full of ammo...

Of course, even cheaper are the durable plastic hobby totes made by companies like Sterilite.. most can be found and purchased at places like Odds 'N Ends for less than Ŭ.00 each for the larger sizes. They are clear so the contents can be viewed (no hidden bombs here!), have a snap shut lid and a handle.

I'd like to see how well the plastic snap shut lid works when it's 10 degrees outside. Ammo cans are indestructable & watertight. I've got a cloth carry-all type bag with handles that 50 cal. ammo box fits nicely into for carrying the cache to its spot. If in an area with people around, common sense should tell you not to be walking around with an ammo box. And if anybody other than a cacher can see the box in it's cache location, I haven't done a very good job of placing it.Therefore, not too worried about anybody thinking it's a bomb.Plastic in the winter-time doesn't cut it for one of my caches.

Well, I think I've solved the problem of potential leaks by using Saran Quick Covers on the plastic cache boxes.. works for me! Low cost alternatives still being sought....

I've been thinking of buying some .50 calibur cans from Cheaper than Dirt, but wanted to know (from the people with experience dealing with them) if the come in decently good condition.  I've checked local surplus stores and found that the cans that they have are in horrible shape.  Any thoughts?

Iron Chef--I've received 15  50 cal. ammo cans from them & didn't get a bad one out of the bunch. They were all as good as, if not better, than any I have purchased  around here. And at an average of about ū.00 less per can. Totally pleased.

Gimpy... I checked out cheaperthandirt.com for those cans, I even remember them being listed, but now either they are sold out or the link is gone. Do you know if they still carry them?

Hi Quinn. Yup, they're still there for ū.99/pc. for 50 cal. I haven't ordered any in abot 8 wks. so don't know if they're out but from the cheaperthandirt home page, click on military surplus up top and they're pictured right on the page you get directed to. I should order more too. I just put a cache out this morning that I'm going to post here now & I'm taking 2 up to the mts. so I've only got 1 left. I hit geodog cache this morning & Waterdog didn't spray any paint on the 30 cal. can & I noticed it's starting to show some rust. I'll let him know when I log the find. Good Luck with the cans.:).--Gimpy-

This is in reply to deforest's July 4 post:  The new surplus place near Brockport, NY has ammo cans, good ones from Ft. Drum, but a little rich on price.  30 cal five bucks each, two for nine bucks, and 50 cal eight bucks, two for fifteen.  They're open weekends.

wow...that is steep in price. There is a surplus store at the corner of Stone road and dewey ave here in the town of greece that has very nice condition .50cal cans for around 5.50 each. I am coming to realize that this is even a bit pricey. The thing about buying from army auctions is you sometimes have to do so in bulk. Thus bringing home a truck with 5000 cans would almost certainly have your wife packing your bags. I am still looking for a better means for getting the cans. If I can get cheaperthandirt.com to drop the price on the cans and shipping for a large quantity, I might be willing to order a lot load and put them in my garage for you guys when you want them. Let me make some calls and see what can be done. But I guess for those quick needs and hands on quality, paying the 8.00 or so isn't so bad :)

WWW.cabelas.com has 4 cans for ร.79 plus Ŭ.95 S&H.  Do the math and you have Ů.18 a can.  Not the best price but 6 days or less and they're on the doorstep.
The "Cheaper than dirt" site does have the best prices.  For 5 cans at ร.95 plus ů.97 S&H, Do the math again and you have ŭ.58 a can

Man! I got to brag about my big can!  To anyone eager to twist those words - I'm talking ammo can.  For those in the know it's a 800 CRTG 5.56mm Blank M200. For those not in the know it's just like the popular 50 cal. ammo can except it measures 12" X 6.8" X 8.6' deep. It holdes a full size 8.5" X 11" notebook without a curl.  "Where did I get it?" you ask. Sir Plus Supply Union Hill, NY 14563  Phone # (716) 266-6808  They were at the DEC Sport show in East Avon/Lima and they specialize in ammo cans.  Standard 50 Cal. cans Ŭ  the big can mentioned above (a little steep) at บ. They do carry larger cans at various prices. But then how do you hide a  10 gallon box?  I do have a business card with a web address: http://members.aol.com/keinfire/sirplus.html
Street Address is: 2395 Titus Ave. Rochester, NY 14622
Contact is: Steve

Tell them Road Kill sent you. That won't get you any discount but it sounds better than "The guy with the big can".
Road Kill is grinning.

I have dealt with this guy before. He has some pretty nice quality ammo cans and good prices. I bought about 40 of the .30cal cans about 9 months ago and still have plenty. I guess I should have stepped up to the .50cals now that I think of it. But anyways, with all that is happening in the world today, please be sure to paint and mark well all of the Geocaches you place.

Just saw in the Where's George threads where a Bomb Squad in Az supposedly recently "detonated" a cache due to onlookers concerns it contained a bomb.

I know I actually had a cacher who was searching for one of mine (Redwings Treasure) and parked in a residential area no where near the cache and entered the park it was in from the back side.
Residents called the police saying they saw him and his partner get out of the car and enter the wooded area with a gun. They (police) were waiting when he returned to his car only to find out the supposed gun he was holding in his extended hand was his GPS.

I'd like to point out that this one happened prior to the 9/11/01 attacks.  Some people just panic easily and it will only get worse now.

Again, with everyones hightened "Panic" level due to current events, Please be sure to mark the outside of this type of container very plain and visible.

I'm not surprised to hear about that incident at all.. especially now with deer season and the terrorist attacks, everybody should be extra vigilant, cacher and cachee alike.

I know this topic is serious and people do have reason to be vigilant.  I honestly wouldn't want it any other way. But I hope no one takes offense or thinks it improper if Road Kill poses this question: "If they,re mistaking GPS's for guns, would a fox hat look like a turbin?

Well...to be honest with you Roadkill, I had already contacted the F.B.I. about you and that darn hat weeks ago. And if I were you, I wouldn't head into any airports wearing that thing.  :)

I had thought about that but a bit too late. I am not sure if there will be any in my area this late in the year and may have to wait until spring. I have still been getting mine from the army surplus store but they are a bit pricey. Gimpy has been getting his via mail order I think with cheaperthandirt.com
But I will have to remember the shows come warmer weather.

Might be tough, mikechim. Of the six orders I've placed there, five made it in less than a week. But being this close to Christmas, UPS might be running a little behind. ???

Hmmm... yeah I kind of figured it would be close, to be honest I didn't even consider the increase in time because of :xmas.
