Gimpy!  You sum it up the best.  It's about accessing the medium that gets us to the game.  I have listed three of my caches from there here.  If it can get others looking into the sport via their choice of mediums: one, both or all..., then Amen to the sport!  I'm more than kickin' tires now, Quinn.   :oo:

I will be the first to admit that I tend to get hot under the collar when someone makes a move to pull the whool over my eyes, but after a sit back when all is said and done I tend to calm down enough to let things take it's course. I have stated what I believe to be true and sincere, and now that others know where I stand they can go from there. All of the posting in this now very long thread I agree with in parts. So now looking around I can see that people are devided as to what they think will come of all of this. But as long as they are thinking about it is fine.
So now I think we can get back to geocaching as the weather starts to get warmer (in most areas) and maybe set this aside for now.
I am glad that you are no longer "Kicking the tires" and are now sitting in the drivers seat :)  We continue to grow and I am certain that caches will start popping up in your area from other members very soon.
And to "Cache-potato"... I also would like to welcome you to the site. i hope you like what you see and by all means continue to speak your mind ;)  By the way...Very cool emoticons you had there!

I think it is safe to say, I would not be here typing this now had the other site not gone pay to play.

Yeah, a bit of the charm seems gone with the commercialization of the game.  I’m definitely spending more time here and placing my caches on this site as well as the other.  On the other site they’re getting tired of hearing people bring up the “Elitist” comparison but for me, that’s exactly what “members only” caches are.  It just seems like a transparent way of sucking people into paying a fee.  In my area, I’ve never heard of caches getting plundered.  Frankly, some of them are so poorly placed that I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened but I think it’s a stretch to justify a fee as a means of preventing it.  Good grief, I’m spending too much time thinking about this. Think I’ll take Quinn’s suggestion and do a night search. ;)

Caches around here never get plundered either...mostly because Gimpy places them in Prickers and poison Ivy all the time!   J/K :grinnin

Our site will be ready soon...when it is, those that would like to particiapate will be welcomed with open arms as they are here at Navicache.  It is not in any way our intention to lure geocachers from Navicache.  We want to ENHANCE and AUGMENT the sport of geocaching...not lure everyone into just using our site.  We are not *competing* with navicache.com...the main reason we're doing this is to give people several options and the biggest reason is to get our site in a search engine so people looking for geocaching will find our site.  With Quinn's permission, we'll be adding prominent link to navicache.com from our page also.  Alternatively, guess who will *not* be getting a link to their page from ours.  :)

Those that have bi@#hed and moaned about there being *too many* geocaching sites are apparently a bit on the naive side.  If you cannot see why having multiple, non-pay sites is better for the sport then you have a lot to learn.  There is strength in diversity and having more sites out there will serve to make each site better -- with the sole exception of geocaching.com.  It's going downhill with the fleecing of its members and I doubt it's going to stop.

The intelligent ones will post their caches on our site as well as here at navicache.com.  If you don't think you'll find the time to post them in both places (or all three if you choose to take part in the craphole known as geocaching.com), that simply equates to laziness.  I don't think we'll miss the lazy geocachers if they don't go to our site.  :)

This may be an unpopular stance, but I have no problem with multiple sites. I've even got a couple of caches listed on geocachingworldwide.com. I have no idea where their home base is, but if the folks that visit that site on a regular basis are heading up our way for whatever reason, they can get the info for my caches. I place them for others to enjoy & the more exposure they get, the better. Just like here at Navicache. There are caches listed here that are not listed anywhere else. Hopefully, if a cacher/cachers are heading up to this area for vacation or whatever, they know about Navicache, & can get the info for those caches. But as far as taking part in geocaching.com, at this point, if you want to cache, you're going to. Mainly for the sheer volume. If you're going to Australia on business, & you want to catch a few caches while you're there, what are you going to do? You pull up that country on Buxleys maps, click on a little dot, & you're going to a page on geocaching.com. You're going to get the cache info from there, for free, or you're not going to go caching. That's just fact. No matter how much you may despise the site, the gigantic majority of cachers go now, & will continue to go to that site. Just as long as the info can be obtained for free. I think members only caches will be a failure & be few & far between. If you can start your site, & get 1/10 th the caches that are listed there, you might get traffic. Like I said earlier. All of my caches are listed here & geocaching.com. Why do 75% or better of the logs on my caches coming from geocaching. Because thats pretty much where it all started & playing catch-up is not an easy task. Look at the features that Navicache has. How can you explain that cachers that live within 10/20 miles of here,  log local caches on geocaching & not here. So good luck on your venture, Jumpmaster. And I'd be happy to list some of my caches there as well. But it'll be a long time before I consider not putting them on geocaching. I put them out there to be found. And if thats where the majority of cachers go to look, that's one of the sites where my cache listings will be. I will always consider Navicache as my home caching site, as the association I have with all the folks here can not be replaced anywhere. As it grows, circumstances will change. But it's an uphill battle when you're going up against a site with a huge head start & a very large following. Time will tell.

Speaking from the UK end of this thread, I have to mention that one person was slagged off in the UK forums for daring to include a URL to his business website (which was only indirectly benefitting from geocaching) and including some free CDs in his caches.

That person, like Mike, is now excluded from the 'other place' and seems to be the victim of geotrashing.

Yet the same minority who complained about the 'commercial' caches now seem to be queuing up to pay to use the other site!

Like the title of the film says "It's a mad mad mad mad world".
In fact, come to think of it, the parallels with geocaching and accusations of commercialism fit well.  IIRC they were all looking for a lot of money which was hidden somewhere.  :grinnin

My one remaining active cache is listed on here and on geocachingworldwide.  I pulled it from the other place before it went 'pay to play' due to the apparent treatment of a particular cacher in the UK.

I did put the opinion that geocaching would, in some form or another, 'go commercial', but was told that I was talking out of my rear end by other, more informed, people.  I was also told that the cacher in question had a history of upsetting people by making geocaching commercial!

The same people who are now announcing that they've payed their $30 and are calling it a donation.  Yea, that saves their credibility as far as I'm concerned. Not.

I respect your opinion, Morseman. I've got 20 caches out there now, & more planned. As much as I have mixed feelings about what's happened, I love the game & can't allow those feelings to distract me from it. And, might I add, thats quite a fine dashing team you've got. I've fallen by the wayside a bit this month, but I'll get back in the swing.

Just dropping by, I never knew about your site until all troubles on teh geotrashing.com site. I am a little bit peaved. I stated my opinion about the MOC's and I was treated as though I said I was gonna bring down geocaching all together. I don't understand teh immaturiy that some people have. The funny thing is that they had the nerve to tell me I was being immature. Anyway, now that I have that off my chest, I will be posting here. I have a good freind that has a bunch of caches to post also, so I will try to get him to log on. Well, thankyou for the alternative. DesertRat

Hey desert rat, yep I noticed your posts on the other site.  If you read any of mine all I can say about the principles of geocaching and everythign else I was talking about over there (and why mocaches are bad) is examplified (sp) here.  This is a very friendly grassroots site, which I've been coming to for quite some time and truly love.  As gimpy points out I still use geocaching.com and post there just because it currently has a bigger audience but hopefully that will change with time.

Hello DesertRat,

The more the merrier.  :^:

In case you wondered about the referrence by Gimpy to a 'team', quite a few of us on here are "into" geodashing as well as geocaching.

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm just one of the team members, Iron Chef and AquaDyane (I'm sure I've spelt that wrong!) and others put a lot of effort in.

I just swan off to collect the ones closest to where I live and work. :D

And, if you believe that, you will believe anything.  :grinnin

This game looks like it's going to be close, I was looking for a few more to try for, but with Dad still in hospital my free time is, obviously, not as free as it was. (That's a spoiler to put Dave Hinns off the trail)

It will be interesting to see what happens when BOB!! is back home.

Rochester, NY. home of the "Garbage Plate".

I decided to use the "Jolly Roger" avatar because to me it represented Pirates, which we all know represents treasure, leading to Caching.

Or I could be wrong.

Do you mean originally?  If so, I'm from Birmingham (That's Birmingham UK, not USA  :)   )

I now live in a place called Bolsover in Derbyshire, UK.  Before that I lived in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, UK for a number of years.
