With Big Green topping 1 million active caches, I was curious how many are listed here?  Is there a way for general users to tell?

If I counted correctly, about 11110 plus/minus a few. However, of those some are retired and I don't know of a good way to see which. Neither the GPX files nor the GPSS files seem to specify that in some consistent way.

Plus, even given the best NC count, we can't really add it to the million plus number from Seattle, since many are duplicates.  Still, I'm curious.

You are right, but on the other side I would even be happy about more duplicates. They are not bad - with proper support to mark them they would be really nice to have.

I found the Navicache XML interface by poking around in old postings and using these data I counted:

11105 geocaches, of which 7949 are not retired.

Other interesting statistics:

Of the total of 11105 caches:
- 2701 are 'unrestricted'
- 2821 are 'non_commercial_use_only'
- 5583 are 'private use only'

- 5253 are listed as in the US
- 4570 are listed as in Germany

There are caches listed in 73 countries.

All in all, there are 36354 'found' logs on navicache.com (and 1291 not_found).

There could be much more dug out from that data, but this was what came to my mind right now and could be done easily by a one-liner on the command line.

Cool.  Thanks, KFL.

I wonder when we'll hit the 8000th active geocache on Navicache.
