Hi
First, what a great site and message board. Right, I am totally new to GPS but am thinking of buying a Map 330. Any comments on that selection first would be most helpful.
Second, I have a laptop with Autoroute and Navigator loaded. Can I connect the 330 with the serial lead to my laptop to drive my Autoroute to give me real time location as i travel?
(p.s. will need to buy a 9 pin serial to USB lead as well)

First, what are you wanting to do with the GPS?  I would recommend a Magellan Meridian series GPSr over the 330.  If you went with the Gold or platinum, you could get a bundle with Direct Route and skip the need for the laptop all together.  I have the Meridian Platinum and have found it indespensible and is my absolute FIRST recommendation to anyone looking for a GPS no matter what their level is.

Second, yes, as long as you can hook a cable to the GPSr you can plug it into the laptop and use it for real-time mapping/routing.  Only thing, the MAP SOFTWARE needs to support the GPSr.  You can get a nice serial to USB converter from http://www.pc-mobile.com

Where will you be doing most of your Geocaching ( I am assuming you will be doing some :grinnin )? Tree cover and terrain is always something to keep in mind when picking ay GPSr.

I have had the Map330 as well as the Meridian Green, Gold, Platinum and now Color. While Deckyon is correct in that the Meridian's are a definite step up, I must say that my 330 never failed me either.

Hi
Thanks all for replying. I want to use the GPS for a variety of things. I want to use it when mounting biking, cycle touring, hiking. I also ride a motorcycle and it will be a good bonus to have a handlebar mounted unit to save stopping to read maps. I also intend to tour Europe in my car so i wanted something to hook up to my laptop to drive Autoroute or Navigator which would give me voice prompted navigation. Lastly, I have only just discovered Geocaching and that can now be combined with my hiking, sounds fun. I have seen a few 330's going cheap lately which was steering me down that route.

The Platinum will give you autorouting (with the Direct Route software) without needing a laptop.  Sure, the Color and I think Gold will also, but the Platinum is everything the Color is, but without the color screen and cheaper.

What is you ultimate budget?

Hi
In the UK the platinum is around 3 times the price of what I can obtain a 330 for. It would be my first GPS, so I am not sure if its worth it. My thinking was to get a 330, learn how to use it, find its shortcomings, then when I know what I really need upgrade perhaps in a year to a top model.

Ok, understandable.  Have you looked into a SportTrak model?  the thing with the 330, is that I have seen a lot of people trying to get rid of them on the "other" site.

If possible, hit the store and try one out.  Also, if this is your first, try eBay.  There are always plenty of GPSrs out there.

Have you considered trying and find someone local that has a gps and cache with them for a little while, then buy your own?
Of course this assumes there is someone around, they'll let you 'play' with the unit enough, and your willing to pay out $$$ :sick for a top model sooner.

Why are people offing the 330? (is there a problem or all they all going to newer colored models and such?)

Hi
Well I got my 330 at a good price off ebay and am very pleased with it.
Next question. Next I intend to buy the Mapsend Europe CD, I have available I believe 8mb to download detailed street data. What sort of area does 8mb allow you download? I guess it depends on the amount of detail but a typical figure would be useful.

well here in the states (New York) 8MB's would pretty much cover about 3 counties of data (topo) I believe I had about 2500 square miles in there.

If you find that 8 MB's of detailed street data is too small, you may be interested to know that some 330 owners have deleted the built-in 8 MB base map and replaced it with the 2 MB base map from a Meridian Green/Yellow.

Doing so increases the downloadable detailed map size to 14 MB.

BTW - We used to have the 2 MB Euro base map available for download, but Magellan politely asked us to remove it.

Nah... that's too easy!  Let's go up and over!
Why follow a trail when we can blaze our own? :p
