This morning Magellan launched the new summer long  Magellan GPS Treasure Hunt contest .

Be sure to check out this great contest  designed to introduce Magellan GPS users to geocaching. The contest actually will consist of 31 different "hunts" from now till Labor Day. That means 31 different folks will have a chance to win a Grand Prize.

I think this was a great idea and the perfect time for Magellan to do this. i was wondering what people thought about this thus far and also what portions of the actual treasure site page they like or dislike and why?

Do you feel it provides enough information to understand or do you think they need to give more details?

Geeze.....the NY cache is on Long Island of all places...

As if everyone living out there couldnt afford to buy several of their own Color GPSr's...

I can understand locating it near NYC, due to the population, but you'ld they could have located it on the upstate side to give a bit more of the state a chance to find it....

Oh well, its still very cool that Magellan has done more than acknowledge that geocaching exists, they've started promoting it. Even though its probably in their own best interests to sell more consumer grade units.

I think more details would be nice.

UPDATE!

So far two grand prizes have been found.
One in Florida by Doombot and one in NY.

Both are now very lucky owners of the Magellan SporTrak Color GPS.

Congrats go out to both finders!

So they only give a map of a whole state and two clues?? Then after its found the lat & lon are released?

Is there anything that makes these caches stand out other than the relatively large prize given to the first-to-find?

From what I understand, one of the two caches found first didn't have a log book.

I hate being right....

I still think it's pretty cool that Magellan decided to do something like this and I hope they do get lots of sales but LI was almost too easy to predict....

Oh well, maybe they'll have one in PA or OH that's less than an 8 hour drive.
???

I found the Trasure hunt through Navicache, so thank you!
I would have set up something where any entrant (online too) would get something, maybe a coupon or small pin
with 31 only treasures most ppl wil lfind the locations 'out of reach'.
Still, a very nice approach, and very nice to see Magellan promoting Geocaching.  Nice to have them on board.
Happy hunting!

I've been trolling this board for a few weeks, so now that people are talking about us, I thought that I'd post a "Thank you" to Quinn who has been very nice, both before and after this contest (could this sentence be any longer?). Also, thanks for the link, I think it gave me and Ms. Doom the leg up we needed to FTF the cache. (But no, you can't have half the prize. Maybe a cold beverage or 12 of your choosing if you are ever in Central Florida.)

Thanks again,
Doombot!

Doombot, Once again congrats on your find!
You deserve it for making that long drive (70 miles I think it was)
I am not so sure i would have just jumped in the car and drove 70 miles for a cache... wait a minute, I HAVE jumped in a car and drove 70 miles for a cache!!!  :grinnin

I'll take you up on that cold one if I get down that way  :)

Magellan makes some great GPSR's, I am certain you are gonna love that one...well done!

BTW- If you have any pictures of you and the Prize I would like to add them to our news section.

You might know more that I do, but the rules say that we would get one of 31 random grand prizes. Some of them are trips and backpacking gear, and of course the GPS'r. (We're kinda hoping for a trip.) But there will be pics for you no matter what. (Maybe I could become the "Jared" of Geocaching.)

OK, I found the answer to what makes Magellan's caches stand out. They are much harder to find. That's because Navicache caches have correct coordinates! ;-)

I see they announced two new caches over at Magellan's Treasure Hunt site. That maks six so far with four found.
:thumbs-up
