Hi all, newbie here and also at GPSing. I just purchased a magellan Explorist 200 and wanted to know if I can load topo maps onto it? If I can, where can I find ones for my unit. I'd like them for ATVing, hunting and fishing in the Pa. area. Thanks people.

By the way, if I can't, someone let me know how good of a unit this is. I'd just like to use it for hunting, fishing and ATVing. And are the maps up to date?

This unit does not have the ability to expand memory or upload additional map data. It also uses a 'patch' vs  quadrafiler antenna so may not do as well as some units in hilly or (especiall) heavy tree covered areas. While not a bad basic/beginner unit, the three items I mention are important in my book and why I prefer the Meridian series of GPSr's.

For your intended uses it may be all you need, but this depends on the type of terain you frequent, and how familiar you already are with the area. Nothing beats a good tiopo map to get you around that swamp or ravine!   :thumbs-up

I believe the Explorist is capable of loading maps. Is that correct?

One other question. Which Magellans don't need access fees? Reason I'm askin so many questions is I'm thinking about upgrading already to maybe the 210 which I see you can load maps. Why is there a charge for access fees on some and not others?

Some are and some are not, depends on which model. The 200 (which you asked about) has 8MB of maps included in its memory, but does not have the capability of uploading additional maps. I believe the eXplorist 400 is the first in that series that had the ability to expand memory via SD cards and also upload map data. The 210 allows uploading of map data, but has fixed memory size.

There is no usage fee/charge that I am aware of for any  of the GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers. Now some specialized services such as OnStar and those offered by some cellular phone companies charge for their services, but that is a whole different thing.

I think some feature lists for various models may mention the 'free' or 'no charge' point strictly as a marketing tool.
