I am new and I have been looking for a GPS and I have narrowed it down to the Meridian Gold.  Walmart has them for 199.00 in York SC.  Is this a good price??  I have also been reading a lot about all of them and seen where they say you need to back up your base map.  Is this true and if so how do you do it.  I am going tomorrow to get the Meridiam GOLD and I hope that I have made the right choice.  I am going to need alot of help.  I am also sorry if this is an old topic for some.

I think you will like the MeriGold a lot. Had one myself for some time and is probably one of my favorites.

$199 is a good price and actually the same as we offer here through our AdventureStation Store.

Some back-up therir basemaps, though I never did and never had need to. Guess it is not a bad idea to have a backup though.

Thanks PC Medic, I have been racking my brain (what little I have left) on which unit to buy.  This is a hard choice to make on which unit to buy.  Then you read all the other things that go along with it.  Makeing maps backing up base maps.  It sounds like a lot of fun once you learn what you are doing.  I have been talking to my brother about it and he wants me to go ahead and get the unit because we have a cache already pick out to try.  That is not far from his house.  I want a unit that I can use for a little bit of everything traveling, hunting, fishing etc.  The cache is Stars and Stripes Forever.  Thank you for your reply.

To get the most out of the unit you should invest in one of the MapSend products. TOPO is good for hiking but will not do street routing. DirectRoute does street routing but does not have TOPO information. I don't know about the new TOPO 3-D
