Appears a couple of senators have authored a bill (The Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program of 2003, or “Open Fields” bill) that would help open up private lands to "those who want to hunt, fish or just enjoy the outdoors”.

This may be worth watching or even writing to those in power to support (depending on what else they try to hide in the bill   :rolleyes  ).

Find more about the Open Fields Bill .

I have not found the wording of it, but I see these quotes, some of which conflict a bit:

"provide incentives to landowners who voluntarily open their land to hunting and other wildlife-related activities. "

and:
"offering incentives for them to open their land to those who want to hunt, fish or just enjoy the outdoors"

and:
"designed to provide sportsmen with increased opportunities to access private land"

Not sure how any of those statements "conflict" with one another??

The first and last statement mention only wildlife-related activities (hunting, fishing,...) and sportsmen (hunting, fishing,...)

The middle one add "or just enjoy the outdoors" which would apply to geocachers.

I would like to find the wording to see if this is just a hunting/fishing bill, or if it will include other activities which could include geocaching.

In it's current state (Seen Here) It does not really specify much more than "To amend the Food Security Act of 1985 to encourage owners and operators of privately-held farm and ranch land to voluntarily make their land available for access by the public under programs administered by States." Now while it does not mention geocaching specifically, it does have room for it in the "other outdoor activities".  Another thing to remember is that this is the perfect time to contact these senators and congressman and remind them that geocachers are money spenders too in that many are also hunters and fisherman, or just spend in the same way while in the areas on geocaching trips.
