Hey, cell phones already have 'em... why not make the next logical step and create a GPS with a built-in digital camera? Each photo it takes could be indexed as a waypoint.. when uploaded to a PC, it could automatically create a photo record of the route taken.

I would think it would go the other way first... a digital camera with gps, rather than a gps with camera.
How many photographers might pay a little more if the location is on each image? VS. how many gps users want to be able to take pic a certain location?

You bought a camera to take pictures, and if stamps the coords on the pic, so much the better.  If you bought a gps it was to make navigation easier, so if it takes pictures too, so what?

But it would be interesting to see what combo would win out, big camera with minimal gps functions, or big gps unit with probably crappy camera function.

I think either combination might work fine.. I'd certainly like to see either and already put the bug in Magellan's and Garmin's ear about it. If it were a GPS with photos, at least you could use the GPS to find your way back. A camera wouldn't help you there. Maybe I should approach a low end digital camera co as well.

I know there is currently at least one software package that will merge the data from your GPS with that of your Digital camera, but having it all in one device would certainly be more straight forward and easier to use. I would think that either of the devices mentioned here would be good sellers. I know being into both GPS and Digital imaging I would buy one (maybe both).

I wrote to Thales Navigation (Magellan GPS) and suggested they produce a gps with a built-in digital camera to record waypoints visually and received an email back today that the info was forwarded to Marketing. I think it'd be a nice little gadget if they decide to go ahead with the idea.

I don't think its likely to happen anytime soon. It could happen but theres just not a lot of demand for it. You can get a PocketPC or Palm device today with both a camera and a GPS attachment.

But most people aren't going to want their camera or their GPS limited by haveing them integrated. Like PC medic said their is software available to take the data from your GPS and stamp time and location on your pictures if thats what your looking for. To me this is a better solution becuase it gives you the ability to use the camera that you want with the GPS that you want.

Who knows, they are now camera phones and their are GPS phones it wouldn't be a big leap to have a camera/GPS/Phone but I think most cachers would be dissapointed with the features on the current GPS phones.

Edit:
I was wrong..  ???  Its already been done...  :withstupid
Camera with integrated GPS

Another Edit:
There are currently picture phones available that can stamp location codes into the JPG. gps tagged jpegs

Yet Another Edit:
Very cool website- GeoSnapper - GPS photography

I've been searching for GEOphoto software and so far I've only found Trimbles media mapper which is pretty expensive at $900. Does anyone know of more reasonably priced software?

Yet another edit:
Heres a cheaper option but still expensive at $229, Geospatial Experts

Well I've been playing with it but my GPS doesn't output to a CSV file or g7t file and I can't find a way to convert to those formats. So I can't see it work.

Its a fortuna clip on blue tooth. So I'm limited to what the software on my PPC records. I tried mappopolis and it saves the log in a text file. I tried GPS tuner and it creates a .TRK file thats not compatible. With manual manipulation I can probably get one of those files to work. Theres got to be a easier way though.

The only problem with having a GPS Camera combo is how do you include the GPS into those Locationless cache shots, you'd need to carry a second camera to take photos of your GPS/Camera (or a second GPS)

I would think that the location information embedded in the picture would be enough proof to say that you were there. Even better than photo shopping yourself into the picture.

I LOVE this program.

Heres a sample pic-

Its a playground at a park where I did a cache recently. This program is what I have been looking for.
