Bad time for the forums to go down, but NY is now forumulating their master plan for the Catskill Mtn area. Hundreds of thousands of some of the most beautiful terrain on the planet. Geocaching is now frowned upon in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Send an e-mail supporting our sport to:

Do you want everyone to send a letter? or just those that are actually likely to be caching in the catskills?

I sent one this morning. Explained the benefits of having a "Family" activity, the "Cache-in, Trash-out" policy, the Zero-impact on the environment/no-bury policy, the look on little childrens faces when they find the "treasure" in the cache.

Then I threatened to come up and kick his ass if geocaching was banned. Should do the trick.

J/K about that last part. Really.  ???

With the exception of bodily harm, Team 360 makes some very valid points that many park managers do not consider or understand. The big thing to emphasize is burying of caches on public land is not permitted. Seems so many of them have a picture in their mind of a group of fanatics storming their parks with a GPS in one hand and a beer in the other and a shovel. Everyone knows we only have two hands and the shovel is not needed   :grinnin

No longer living in New York (Too much  bureaucracy for me), I do not keep up with which department manages which lands there anymore. One thing to point out to them if any of this is under U.S. BLM is that they consider geocaching as an "appropriate casual use of public land". They have also drawn up this geocaching guidline and have extended for the past three years in a row. Even if the Catskills Mtn area is not under any BLM control, pointing these findings out to the N.Y. bureaucrats certainly can't hurt.

By the way, just because a 'formal' comment period has ended does not mean that those intersted should stop persuing the matter. Opinions can always be changed.
