You'll want a PC cable so you can upload waypoints en mass, and the more detailed maps from your mapsource. But if this unit it new it may come with one.
Before you go getting lost in the woods try to get a good feel for your gps. Read the manuel, take it outside and around the yard/block, read the manuel, run around outside again, read the manuel (RTM), then post any questions. Make sure you understand how to mark a waypoint (like your car), and how to find that waypoint and use 'goto' to get back to it.
As to the actual caching, pick out one that looks doable for you and enter the waypoint into your gps. I would suggest doing this by hand at first so you know how to do it. The cable can save loads of time by uploading dozens or hundreds of points at once, but at some point you'll need to do it w/o the computer. I've actually read a log or of people who had to give up because they didn't know how to do that (multicaches and uploaded points in advance then printed a page the day of, and the cache had been moved).
Its a Good idea to aways carry extra batteries, and a magnetic compass (always knows the direction, and never needs batteries), and of course water for yourself
