Both!

So geocacing could be classified as a spame....or a gort...

My entire family is in much better shape since we started doing this.......

They also enjoy being called by their caching names........

Looking at getting an airbrushed t-shirt for each one.....with their g.caching name on it.

Dx

I don't think of it as a game.  More of a sport. (or a gort, if you want) I use it as a destination to get me out walking, a direction to head.

I think of it as a recreational activity. Is hiking a sport, or a game? Geocaching is more than just hiking though. But there is not really a way to win, or beat someone else. But then again, fishing and hunting are sports. But I guess in fishing they have tournaments, so it can have winners. I suppose geocaching could have tournaments, so could have winners.
I know I enjoy it. But I enjoy roast beef sandwiches too. Maybe geocaching is a food?

Whatever.

Define your terms. I don't consider it a game or a sport. I consider it a hobby, like stamp collecting.

It could be made into a game or a sport, but any move in that direction gets hooted down at geocaching.com. Here, the mood is harder to read.

I never slithered 400 feet on my stomach, up a rabbit run, under thorn bushes while stamp collecting.

You must not have a British Guiana one cent stamp in your collection, then.

A sport? - Maybe. Frustrating at times but nobody seems totally frustrated.
Entertainment? - Only if you're reading the logs of people who found your hide.

A Game? - I think games have winners and losers. Even at solitare you win or lose depending on the odds. With geocaching even if you don't find a cache - odds are you had fun anyway. ;)

I'm not sure anyone really understands what it is. People will leave a picnic early if they incounter misquitos or rain but add mud, poison ivy, ticks , deerflies, pricker bushes and a cache box. and they'll ford creeks, climb hills and lock their keys in the car to sign a log book. :withstupid

In my opinion sometimes it's a sport and sometimes it's a hobby ( I guess you could say game).  The difference between the two depends on the difficulty of the cache.

The sport argument:  First off, playing against another team, winning or losing, etc. doesn't seem to matter.  Hiking, mountain biking, repelling, etc. can all designated as sports (just look at where you by the equipment, or read the magazines for those activities) so I think if your doing any of those on a cache then it's a sport.  Basically if it takes real exercise and physical effort it's a sport.

On the other hand a lot of the urban caches and easy terrain ones aren't really sports.  There is no physical exertion, (if there was a competitive part then it could be like some of the other "sports" that have no exertion, golf, bowling, etc) to me these caches are more a hobby, or a game.

So to answer your question it's both.  Personally I try to find caches that make it more of sport then a hobby or game.

There's a famous UK quote, can't remember by whom, but I'll do a search on Ask Jeeves later, which goes something like

"Huntin', shootin' and Fishin' are Sports.  Everything else is a pastime."

I might as well ante up and play this hand. I consider goecaching a pastime; similar to a hobby. But, if golf is a sport, then certainly goecaching is. It is also a game, as is baseball, basketball, and football games are. There are rules and there is equipment one needs to play the game. What I'm  trying so say is; geocaching simply is........whatever it is..........to you and yours. Sport? Hobby? Game? Pastime? Waste of time? Yes.........and much more!  :wave

Depends on the person. Most of those who are involved in geocaching are almost obsessive-compulsive about their numbers, checking every day to see where they stand against other teams or players in their area. For these, it is a competitive sport. You know the type: they have to get their online logs "just right" and keep all their finds in perfect order, reading and re-reading them to make sure they included every possible detail. They make it competitive themselves. The few who don't care to compete or keep up with others view geocaching as a hobby. They found the cache, and that's pretty much all they wanted to do in the first place, without competing against others.
So I guess it just depends on the person. Like many other things, it is what you make it to be.
