OK, I saw stuff on where's george about cacheing and have been lurking a little bit.  I have talked it over with my wife and we want to give it a try. (After the snow is gone)

I've done a little map and compass work in the past, have a little hunters survival bag I can carry.  I seem to be missing a GPS.  Guess I need to go shopping soon.

Any recommendations? :^:

This will depend on two factors, type of terrain you will frequent most, and how much you want to spend. I would try to get something with quadrifiler helix antenna at least (other features vary)

For all around performance and at a very reasonable price A Magellan 330X was my favorite. Also currently has a $50 rebate offer.

Other good units are the Magellan Meridian line, Garmin III+ and Garmin V.

I'm in the Southern Tier of NY, near Corning.  Terrain would include trees and hilly areas.

Ah! not too far from some of us here in Rochester, NY.
I would say your best bet would be to go with either the Garmin IIIPlus or the Meridian Gold by Magellan. Both units are very receptive and are great in tree cover. If you ant to go a step up from the IIIPlus there is the Garmin "V" which is also a couple hundred dloors more but offers WAAS as well as turn by turn street directions. If you are looking for something strictly for the sport and recreational purposes you can't go wrong with any of the three I just mentioned...as well as the 330. On the main page at the bottom os a good place to start as far as getting prices on these and other units.
We are here to help so if you ever have any questions...just ask!

I'd like to add that buying a used GPS unit isn't all that risky.
Most of them are fairly sturdy, though eBay tends to list items pretty close to retail.

I was out hunting a cache with Rick a couple weeks ago and his 330 seemed to have more problems than my Venture under the tree coverage, so it's kind of a crapshoot.

I bought a used III+ recently, but have been so busy with Minute War that I've not had a chance to try it out in the woods.

I've always heard how wonderful the unit performs so I'm not worried.

If you do decide to get a mapping unit, be aware that the (Garmin) topo maps are limited in detail. You won't see much more than where streams and hills are. Fire roads are usually displayed but nothing much smaller.

Mostly, you need to be aware that the error is compounded between the placer of the cache and the finder, so you may zero out at a spot that's still 50 or more feet from the actual cache. It's part of the challange.

Well it doesn't have the quad antenna, it's got the patch, but I LOVE my etrex venture.  Yes there were times out west under the heavy tree cover of the large redwoods that it lost reception for a bit, but I've found over 80 caches with it across the US and have never not been able to find one (providing that they still existed).  I actually recomend the etrex units over anything else just for the simple fact of their durability, I've fallen on the thing so many times and even went over the side of a cliff with it.  All it has damage wise is a couple of scratches on the view screen.
Like I said I haven't had any accuracy or reception problems even though it is a patch antenna, yes there are times I longed for the III+ or the V but price is definately an issue.  I've been on several times with my buddy who has a Meridian (the basic one) and my etrex seems to get me closer to the cache then his meridian does (most of the time, probably 60/40).  I really don't think you can go wrong with even the basic etrex which you can pick up for around $100, (unfortunately it doesn't come with a PC cord, which is a must, but you can buy one for it).  Anyway, that's just another view for ya.
It all depends on what else your going to be using the unit for.

Now lets think about this for a minute...going my Mikechims last post we have found out that using the Etrex type of GPS has taken him over a cliff and made him fall several times...do you really want a GPS that is going to do that to you? :)

Welcome FireMedic, from another Georger  :wave

I started out with the yellow submarine (eTrex) & while it got me to 50+ caches, it wasn't particularly good under trees & hills.  I'm happier with the III+, but I've had it "NaviFritz" too in the deep gorge associated with the "Porcupine Den" near Pulaski, NY.

Hi Firemedic, and welcome to Navicache.

The following is meant tongue in cheek, are you sure she didn't add "until I've reviewed the insurance cover" ?

Hey Firemedic,  I grew up in your area...Caton, Paintedpost, Horseheads....

We have his and hers GPS...I got tired of waiting with the slower HIltons while fearless said..."I'm just moving ahead to keep the signal"...the Garmin III+ is way good...but mine is better...Garmin V....esp for ploting road trips...Like we're on today.  The Garmin was more accurate that Triple A...by over 2 hours!

Right now in Raleigh NC....some nasty tick promoting cache placements so consider buying bug spray along with your unit!!

Welcome!!

Hi there firemedic
I sort of like better a mapping unit .It gives you that additional help when caching in unknown area's,towns etc.It isn't an absolute feature but it's better than carrying a ton of maps.

My GPS V came yesterday and I am having fun learning about it.  I loaded the maps for my area and there is not much detail there.  I am a little disapointed with the detail of the maps. ??? There is an easy cache not far from my house. I am going to try to find it today or this weekend.

I went to Pot O' Gold today.  It is not listed here but on the other forum.  I would have listed it here if it was logged here.  It was the only 1 & 1 in the area and I wanted an easy one for the first one. I took an Irish coin and left a George.
The George Link I will put the coin in the next Navicache cache I go to.
