I am hoping to start into geocaching with my kids. I live in CO, some trees and alot of terrain.

I was looking into either the Magellan Explorist 210 (comes with Mapsend topo 3D, ligihter plug and case package)( I don't know if it has back tracking route abilities) and Garmin eTrex legend.

Will I also have to buy a special cable to connec to my computer? an added hidden cost?

I'm a complete novice, so any advice to help select them is appreciated. I'm open to other ideas as well. I want to stick to around 150.00.

Thanks, EJ

First let me say, welcome to Navicache.com  :wave

While I have never used the two specific models you mention I have used units from both manufactures. In fact my first was the old eTrex 'Yellow', though my preferences were the Magellan Meridian line (Meridian Color being my favorite).

So far most reports I have seen on the eXplorist 210 have been favorable. Some pluses it has over the eTrex Legen is 32MB RAM with 22MB available for your use (maps, etc). 14 Channel vs Legend's 12 and 50 track log files, each with 2000 track-points. The eXplorist also (to the best of my knowledge) includes the USB cable, which I believe is sold seperate from the Legend.

A draw-back both have IMHO is the patch antenna vs Qudrifilar type found on the higher end Magellan and other units. I mention this as quadrifilar generally offers better reception  reception in tree cover and hilly terrain. As mentioned before however I did start off myself with an eTrex and while it was not as quick to keep a lock all the time, I always managed to find the cache I was looking for. I am in coastal Virginia with a lot of tree cover, but flat terrain.

You mention wanting to stay in the $150 range. If it were me, I would be on Ebay where you can find Meridian Golds and Color as well as other units at very good prices.
