Hi all...as you can see the main page as well as some of the linked pages have taken on a new look to help cut down the long scroll from all of the link bars we had on the old main page. It is very important to us to get as much feedback on this as we can. So if you could please let us know if you like it the way it is, the way it was, or maybe what you would change yourself to make things user friendly.
Don't feel like you will hurt our feelings by speaking your mind, this is the only way we know what people want. we made these changes because many of you out there expressed that the large amount of main page links was too much to take in as well as required much scrolling.
So give us the low down...is it a color thing? a setup thing? just what does it need to make things the perfect page? ???

I like it as well, I think changing the layout of pages keeps things fresh.  I think the site looks more professional as well.

First visit to the new layout for me, and it looks good.

However, I guess what I want is a quick link to the forums as that's where I tend to head to first.  With the side drop down I could click there quickly.  Also, I'll need to re-spot the chatrooms. :-)

I tend to be a bit reactionary.  I get used to a way of doing something and then get disturbed if it changes.  However, that's not to say I don't appreciate the time, effort and thought that will have gone into the redesign and rewriting of the site...  Just give me a couple of visits to get used to it.

:)

I like the webite but as a new user, I can't comment on how good it looks as compared to the old one.   First, I'd like to thank the two gentlemen who did the Channel 13 piece because it got me interested.  Second, I'd like to thank Gimpy and Quinn for the personal advice and making me feel welcome to the website.  We're really looking forward to giving this a try as soon as I can shake a cold (hopefully this weekend).  Thanks again

Jim...do you already own a GPSR? and if so what kind is it if I may ask? the reason I ask this is I try to keep updated on what people like to use. and by the way...Welcome to the Forums :)  It's great to see a new face here.

I have a GPS II+ that I've had for about two years.  It seems to be pretty straight forward to use and I've had no problems with it.  One of my favorite experiences was this past summer, while fishing in Quebec, I was able to find our way back to our favorite fishing hole by using the trackback feature.  Every island, tree and rock looks the same in that area, the fog was so thick that visibility was no more than 10 feet and I was able to lead 3 boats about 16 miles to our favorite little cove without hitting a single deadhead.  I made GPS believers out of more than just a few other fishermen that day.  I'm really looking forward to using it with this new sport.

Well seeing as how this new layout is my project, I gotta ask what you mean by a "quick link" to the forums?

There is a link in the menu bar as well as within the text of the page so I am missing what you are looking for. Let me know and if it fits the format, I'll add it.

Anybody else have to change the print layout to landscape to fully print out a cache page? When I just click the print icon up top in IE, the last few words in each line are missing due to page layout. Always been like that for me. My print settings or page layout?

Gimpy...do you mean you are having the text cut-off in the new layout or the existing one on the website?

I thought so...we knew of that problem and were sure it was fixed in the new layout. This will go active very shortly. We just wanted to be certain all bugs were worked out as well as working on the members page. I am glad you like! :)

I like the new page layout, and the new features in the cache pages very much.  But since you asked, I'll be really, really nit-picky and mention a couple of things that IMHO would be better:

The introduction on the home page might look better with a less formal font, maybe some sort of stylized sans serif.

The grid for decoding the hints on the new cache page looks great on the screen, but when printed out (at least on my HP 970) it loses the gray-out look and is a bit distracting to look at and read the content.  For printing, a single-line grid might be better.

By the way, thanks for fixing the printing problem!  It'll save me a lot of paper, I usually didn't remember to switch to landscape mode and wound up printing the cache descriptions twice.

Looks good!

Picky, Picky, Picky!   :D

I look at some different fonts for the page to see what looks more appealing.

Glad I wasn't the only one with the printing problems!

UPDATE:

This posting is to bring those of you that are into the sport of Geocaching,
up to date on new additions we have placed on the Navicache.com website. We
would like to get some of you to test out the pages and kick the tires a bit
to let us know your thoughts on. I have been a long time viewer of this news
group and found it to be very informative, thus I am sure that by many of
your opinions we can work from.

We have updated all of our pages as well as Data base at Navicache.com to
give Geocachers tons of new options for the way they get their Cache
information. The best way for any of you to find out about all the new toys
we added would be to just visit the website and find out for yourselves, but
to just give you a picture of some of the things we added I will post them
here...

We listened to what people were looking for and think we covered many of the
idea's that rolled around.

1) We have added a "Spy" feature which will allow any member to track any
Log reports and or cache page changes that are made. When this happens you
will receive an e-mail with a link to that cache page showing you the report
or changes made. You can also click the "Spy" Icon on any cache page to see
the members name of the person watching a cache. This will contain an e-mail
Icon with it if the user wishes to have his e-mail known for question or
comment purposes.

2)We are the first Geocaching website to offer a scoring system which gives
points for finds based on the Terrain/ Difficulty of a cache. So if a Cache
has a higher diff/terrain rating the points will also be higher. We also
added a scoring system for those people that prefer to hide caches versus
finding them, the scoring is based on the same level as finding a cache. We
intend on having a Quarterly game where teams up to 4 members can compete
for points, the winning team will be awarded prizes such as new GPSR's. This
point system and competition is also for the single cacher acting alone.

3) Though very minor people asked for a way to track how many caches were
found by a member, we added that! and went a step further and also added a
tracking for how many a member has placed as well.

4) Map links were very important to many of you so we wanted to be certain
we were giving out quality information based on those needs. We still use
"Topozone" for our topographical maps, but we have made the correction error
which many sites have passed on, thus when you see a cache mark on the map
you can be sure it is a correct location mark. We also added a very nice sat
image mapping link which will generate a pin mark on your cache location.
You can also find a new street guide link for local driving.
Hours of very hard work from our Navicache crew went into making changes
that would make caching much more fun for all. The new search methods added
( Home coordinate, Zip code) are both extremely accurate with any distance
errors being corrected.
We have added so many things I would be better of asking you to just grab a
cache page and click around. If you have caches submitted there is no
problem submitting them on multi sites for the point system if you wish to
get in on the fun.
We are now working on finishing up the "Members Page" which will give all
members complete control over Caches they submit, Logs and personal
Information.
One other thing we added was a encryption section for a cache that when
printed out generates a box grid so that you don't have to guess. Heres a
link to a cache page for testing...
http://www.navicache.com/cgi-bin/db/displaycache2.pl?CacheID=23 . Your
thoughts and comments are always welcome! Much-Much more to come!!

Very impressive!  I just added a find report, and took a tour around, found everything very well done and easy to use.  This is increasingly becoming the the friendliest and most fun geocaching site going! Nice job! :)

I'm confused. Are all the new features in production yet or not? Your announcement message implies they are. But you give a URL to ta cache page "for testing." I don't see any of these features when I arrive at the site by going to http://www.NaviCache.com .

You should be seeing them all. When I said "Testing" it was meant as a means to look around and click on things or play. Yes, all features are up and active. Maybe you need to refresh? Check your new cache you submitted. What you might be seeing is that when you submit a cache it takes a little time for the maps to generate, they do this every hour.

I'm not. Here's the deal. When I do a "detailed search" it brings up a list of caches on a page with a "green" look and feel. The individual cache pages have a URL that uses "displaycache.pl" (no "2" in the script name).

But when I click on the "Newest Caches" link, I get a list of caches on a page with a "blue" look and feel. The individual cache pages have a URL that uses "displaycache2.pl" (note the "2" in the script name).

So, the problem seems to be that one of the search forms still is pointing to the old displaycache.pl script.

The old pages used a link to go to a plaintext hint page.
The new page puts the hint right on the cache description page, but it's encoded.

Maybe I missed it, but is there a way to automatically decode hints? I consider it a hassle to have to do it manually, or to cut-and-paste into a third-party decoder.

Yup...we will be getting to that very soon!  :)  There were a couple other things (bigger and better) we wanted to get added first, but the answer is "Yes" that there will be a means of decoding an encrypted message.
By the way you were correct, for some reason that search field brought up the old style pages, the top search field on that page brought up the new ones. we'll get her fixed!  :grinnin

Very nice additions!

This may sound minor, but I'm really happy that the zipcode search works now.

I know I've had the option to search from coordinates all along but in my case these two are basically the same. A matter of a few hundred feet.

When I'm visiting a friends house, it's much easier to type in five digits than coodinates.

Oh, and one thing... I wasn't exactly clear about who was making all these changes and I thanked George.

Was this a collaberation with PC Medic or...???

I just want to know what to say when I publically amend what I said earlier. eGads!

You're absolutely correct!  :)

The new cache search form is the root of the new development path.

The top form (distance search) leads to the new path, while the bottom form (detailed search) leads to the original path... as does the original search page link.

There are a few more items along the new path that need addressing... after that.... we'll work on the original path... in a bot friendly manner... the menu links will change... but the original code can still be called.  :D

It's a team effort with Quinn, PC Medic, Road Kill and myself, involving many disciplines, which come together in a synergistic manner.  :)

I'm getting script errors when I try to open any of the new cache pages. It complains of an error on line 42, character 1 in the displaycache2.pl script. I have to click OK many times to step through the errors before it eventually loads what looks like a functional page.

I haven't seen these errors before, but I'm using a different computer today. I'm using IE5 on Windows NT.
