I apologize for making my first post a new topic.

I'd like some feedback on whether or not you feel a usenet group intended for geocaching and related hobbies is a good idea.

I currently have a thread that's being cross posted to sci.geo.satellite-nav and news.groups.

If you do not believe that there will be enough traffic to justify a spot in the rec hierarchy, I'd like to hear your opinion. If you think this is a good idea, I'd like to hear about that as well.

Ideally you'll share these views in the usenet thread, but I'll be checking back here a few times a day to see if anyone posted a response to this thread.

I am not certain but I think Yahoo has something of the sorts, but with the sport growing at the speed that it is I can see nothing better than another means of getting information and or feedback about it. Not to mention a good way to build new ideas and branches from the base Geocaching. I say if you have the means, go for it!
By the way...welcome to the Forum and hope to see more of you around here. :)  By the way...what did you have in mind/ were you just tossing out idea's? or did you have a goal that you wished to aim for?  ;)

I've lurked in these boards a few times in the past.
My schedule only allows for so much goofing off time so I've not posted here before, but the people here seem very cordial and knowledgable

Usenet allows me to use software that allows for filters and spell checkers, it's easier to make portable,  and can be read offline.

I've mostly been active in the other message boards (300+ post) so I'm still unsure of what sort of expectations there are here, but with an unmoderated usenet group, there is no one person (or group) in charge. (It's not this board I'm worried about)

If people don't want to hear what you have to say, they can add a filter to their software.

I'm hoping that the usenet group will introduce the hobby to those already involved with usenet, who are unwilling to use a hypertext based discussion board.

I'm a subscriber to the Yahoo list and have been speaking about my ideas for a usenet group to the other subscribers.

Please, by all means inform me if you see cause for concern.

I tried several months back to get a usenet newsgroup started, but was unable after several attempts to convince the powers that be it would generate enough traffic.

I have since turned my attention to maintaining the forums here, but see where both have their advantages.

Usenet? Yes. It's a religious thing. Just like the PC/Mac cult wars, there are Usenet users who wouldn't be caught dead on a Web discussion board and vice versa. So, forums for both are called for and I expect both would thrive.

Unmoderated? Most definitely. My posting privileges were revoked on one geocaching board after I referred to another geocaching site. I've found no such attitude here on NaviCache.com and have no reason to expect that to change :) But Usenet is the granddaddy of unmoderated discussion and is unaffiliated with any geocaching Web site, which can be useful for those who don't want to play favorites.

Finally, it's kind of bad form to make your first post to a site one that invites people to move discussions to another site. :( Hope you stick around for discussion on other topics.

I agree with scout. For the most part I was never one for censorship and that is the main reason why this site exists. I believe you should never have to worry about speaking your mind as long as it does not have truck driver language backing it up. The forums here are for just that purpose...speak your mind, add your thoughts and answer those that need help in the sport. I do not delete any post or topic as long as it's main goal was not designed to pull from Navicache and the sport. if another site is mentioned then big deal :p  as long as the main purpose was not to push from one to another. I too hope that people will realize that things here are a bit more relaxed and less "Business as usual" and can post here without fear of being locked from the Forums.
You will find that those that do come here have become friends over a monitor screen and some even in person. Hope you and others continue to visit! :)

Scout is correctly chiding me with :
"it's kind of bad form to make your first post to a site one that invites people to move discussions to another site. :( "

I completely agree.
I am slime incarnate for having done so,

May a thousand poison oak bushes envelope my caches.
May satellites turn a blind eye in my direction
May I get to the point already....

Let me make it clear, I'm not trying to nab participants from this forum. You'd simply tell me to go ####* myself were I to try.

I'm thinking of the usenet group as supplimental and complimentary. Some people prefer plain text and it's those folks I'm trying to lure.

I think it's be a whole-hell-of-a-lot easier to convince other usenet junkies to read about the hobby if they could use their current software and filters.

Scout also wrote:
"My posting privileges were revoked on one geocaching board after I referred to another geocaching site. "

This is probably my biggest motive.
That, and I'm tired of all the goddamn smiley faces.

I'm not comfortable with the way the message boards are owned and operated (I'm mostly talking about those other ones)

While, I could have just switched to this board immediately, I was afraid that the attitude of ownership/control might be prevelent as well... Ignorance can be bliss in that I always gave you folks the benefit of the doubt.

Just for comparsison's sake, I posted a similar notice on the other board. I'm curious if it will even be allowed to remain.

*profanity test.

Sorry about the smiley faces! :)   I fully understand your concern about Boards and ownership of, but I think you will find there is nobody sitting on a throne here telling one another what they can, can't and where they may or may not post. As a matter of fact Scout and I in the beginning were pretty much at each others throat on the other sites forum, but after much time and understanding have become friends over the computer helping each other when able for Geodashing and caching. You have not a worry if you use this board, but like I had mentioned before the only real thing I would have a problem with would be the use of bad Language as I would like people to not have any concerns if a younger member of the family slipped in the forum or site.
And by the way... you need not wish for those "Poison Oak" bushes on your caches, Gimpy from my area only places his near or in "Poison Ivy" :)  so if you find Poison Ivy you found his cache!      Just kidding Gimpy! we all know it's thorn bushes you look for!

Did I mention I'd be checking back often?

> Sorry about the smiley faces!

Some people like that sort of thing.
I've been conditioned by years of usenet usage to view emoticons as a sign of literary weakness, that the use of a smiley face is an indicator that the author of the post can not use text to imply their true meaning. :p
This may not even remotely apply in this forum but my reaction is (shoot, that dude with the dogs and bells and salivation... Pavlov!) Pavlovian.

>I fully understand your concern about Boards and ownership

Usenet is distributed, nobody can yank the whole thing when their meds wear off.

>like I had mentioned before the only real thing I would
>have a problem with would be the use of bad Language

Sorry about my attempt at it's usage. I was a little curious about how this would be dealt with, if at all. I'm not in the habit of sprinkling my text with expletives. I will refrain from doing so in my future post.

>you need not wish for those "Poison Oak" bushes
>on your caches,

How about.... "May the fleas from a thousand camels infest my armpits."

I'm not familiar enough with usenet to make an informed comment, but I spend at least a good 2/3 hours every day browsing caching forums & sites. I don't know if that makes this a passion or a psychological disorder, but I enjoy the heck out of it. :D  From where I am, I'll go anywhere to talk up this great sport/activity & get familiar with great folks who enjoy this as much as I. But 1 thing will remain constant. Navicache is the first site I go to when I boot up & it's the last site I'm on before I shut down. A great community here & no matter how many sites or groups come along, nothing is going to change that. Fantastic job, Quinn,PC & anyone else involved in providing this site to us. :grinnin

Fleas! Oh My God where. The hat is trembling.

Choberiba - being welcome here is nothing special. They let me hang around and they say I'm welcome too. The truth is I won't leave no matter how much they harrass me. Case in point - they sent me to page 2

I'm with you, emoticons are nice but if you can spell "GRIN" say so.

BTW I welcome you too.

This might paint me as a conspiracy crank....

But I just sent email to my Newsguy rep asking him to send the control message for alt.rec.geocaching.

Now I can't log into those other forums.
