Not being the brightest bulb in the drawer, i figure i will go ahead and ask the question, as i know it can be done but i just can't figure out how to do it. Is there a way to download waypoints from caches to the gps? is there a way to download the cache page information to a pda (other then using plucker and scraping it)?

thanks for the help.

[ Offer to site admins for free programming help at end. ]

A perfectly reasonable question, IMO.   50-odd views and no responses.  Sad.    That tells us this probably IS harder than it should be.

I'm not exactly inexperienced with either computers or caching and I found it less than intuitively obvious.   The only option that I can find for programmatic download of waypoints is powerful, but crude.   First you have to hand-craft a URL to get the XML data that contains the caches you want.   The instructions for doing that are in this forum message   Don't just follow that first link and expect joy; you will have to modify the URL to suit your needs.

Now if you have a GPSBabel that's newer than 9/22 (yes, that would be today) you can feed that file to it, tell GPSBabel it's of type "navicache" and it will cough it back to you in all the file formats or receiver serial uploads that you recognize.   (Mail me privately if you want a set of Windows binaries before the next beta goes up..)

Since this feature is so hidden (unlike the very visible "download these coords" buttons that are all over the House of the Frog)  and I don't know of any other program that reads this XML strain, I have no idea how people are doing this today and apparently 49 others either don't know or aren't telling.

At the very least, a little bit of PHP goop to generate an HTML form to generate a correct linky link would take the pain out of creating these.  If this site is open to code contributions (esp. if it runs SQL/PHP on a UNIX-like substance) I'd even be willing to offer some remedial PHP that would generate that form if you can show how to access the tables of cities, etc.

Actually I did this for myself, and finished the coding last night, but I was not shure how I was going to do the XML (I don't do XML).

Now I know, Thanks Robert.

ok. it took me a very long time to learn how to use gpsbabel, but eventually, i became proficient enough to make the conversions i needed to. then watcher came along and that helped me do things that i knew gpsbabel could do but that i could not figure out how to make it do. i am now attempting to figure out what the heck is going on with that url that grabs the cache data. like i said i am not the brightest bulb, especially when it comes to computers. if someone has the time, and the kind hart, might you explain what is being said in that thread about getting these listings? possible teach me  something here? please? for example, i know you can use radius, but the site folks say pm me or call for info, how about a good how to? thanks

It might be easier to do it in reverse. If you know and can tell us what kind of query you'd like, someone will offer the URL that does it (if it's possible, that is).

i appreciate your invitation. the problem with just hand feeding me is that, if i go on vacation or need a querry in a hurry for an area not supported by the URL someone gives me, i am up the creek. i will just have to sit with it untill i figure it out. i assume ( :( ) i will get it, eventually. if i do figure it out, i will write naviache gpx for dummies like me.
thanks

Hey  :wave

Sorry for the delay in a response, but with Hurricane Isabel ripping through my neighborhood and no power for several days  :(  I have been a tad bit preoccupied.

As for the function being sought here, unfortunately the best current methods have already been mentioned here. I will see what can't be done about a little "goop to generate an HTML form to generate a correct linky link" until we get all of our site updates completed and in place.

I guess I don't get the whole download process either. ???  Maybe they could get the same download options that the "frog site" has, that's easy.  Right now I hand input the cooridnates off this site.  Tedious.  Could be more user friendly, I guess.
love,
