I've noticed a few new cache pages with embedded sound.  Is there a way to turn off this feature in my browser (IE 5.5)?  Or can we discourage this?  One in particular had a long song attached.  This interferes with the mp3 files that I'm already playing with my sound card as I browse Navicache.  Sorry to be a party pooper...

Hi Banjo,

Since I am a fan of the embedded sound (as long as it's not overused, *rant* I feel it should only be used for a cache when it will help the aura if you will of the cache, my tolkien series of caches are an example, the music and the story help set the mood both of which are necessary for the cache experience, however my others don't have it because quit simply it's overkill and annoying *end rant*) I'll try and help you get rid of it.

Most of the time, almost all the time, the embedded sounds are midi files.  I'm not sure if there is a way in IE to turn this off, but just disable midi files in whatever you are currently using to play them...  (probably either winamp or windows media player) that should take care of it.  There are also settings under tools:internet options:advanced that you can change if the music is played or not in the webpage, but I think it won't make a difference as long as you still have something set up to play those files... there may be an easier way and I'm sure if there is one of these guys will let you know.

Mike

ohh yeah, welcome to the forums . :D

Hi Banjo, and welcome to the forums! :)  I tend to agree with you to a point that sound files can be over used depending on what type of cache they are placed in. Mikes cache when placed with the sound I thought was great and like it well, but the problem can be for those people still using dial up modems, this can make a page load forever and might even press the viewer to close the page before finishing just to end the wait time.

Sound and picture files sure can be a neat addition to any cache page, but over use can really make things frustrating at times. I prefer a cache page with minor pictures based within the text but I could care less about the sound unless it has a key point in the cache set-up. There are only a hand full of these caches out there and when people ask me how to add the sound to a page I try to explain to them the pro's and con's to doing so.

Greetings Banjo!  Welcome to the forums! :wave

You can turn it off via IE 5.5's security settings.

Under "Run ActiveX controls/plug-ins", click the "prompt" radio button, and save the settings.

When you are prompted to run the ActiveX control (midi/wave player), just click 'no'.

It may have been mine! :p

Sometimes, the songs are clues, or used for ambience.

Not at all!  The prompting for ActiveX controls will help. :)

Nah... that's too easy!  Let's go up and over!
Why follow a trail when we can blaze our own? :p

Aside from being generally annoying (just shy of major PITA), with dial-up the sound usually starts before it loads completely, and chops in and out like bad cellphone signal.  I usually reach real quick for the volume control on the speakers to mute it.  Just because it's possible to do something doesn't necessarily mean it should be done.  My vote (FWIW) says lose it.

One person's music is another persons noise. Sound should be the choice of the user. If you want to enhance your cache post with sound - place a link to start it rather than to automatically think the user wants to hear it. Guess that makes me a party pooper too.  ???

Thanks for everyone's input... interesting to see so many opinions.  And thanks for not crucifying me for being critical.  I think my final take on this is that sound is an OK adder to a cache page as long as its not too long (keep it under 30 seconds?).  Thanks. :oo:
