I have a question about the city that is displayed for each cache (the location).  I was assuming the site automatically found it based upon the coordinates, but I noticed that one of my caches is in the same park as someone else's cache and they have different city listings.  Also another one of my caches I know is not in the city listed.  It's not at all a big deal, I'm just curuious, am I missing something here?

Which caches are you talking about and we'll take a look at them.

It's not a big deal, just curious.

3 of my caches
The Fellowship of the Ring

CD Swap Shop

Mouse's tree house

All list wesleyville as the city, two are in harborcreek and one is on Presque Isle state park like this one

Presque Isle Beach Cache

I'm just curious about how the city is selected and put up, the only reason I ask is because I stumbled upon it. I went to caches: detailed search: and put Erie, PA in and only got the Presque Isle Beach cache.  (Get them all on the distance search).

Like I said it's not majorly important I'm just curious.

I took both caches within the same park and plotted a course on my software, this showed them to be just a hair under 2 miles from each other. I then used your caches starting coordinates and did a "Home Coordinate" search based on them and it also showed the other cache the same distance.
Now...when I use the zipcode search it shows that both of those caches are about 10 miles from each other, this is due to it showing two different zip codes and basing it on the center of each zip code. I am wondering if by chance the zip code boundery for that area is right where the two caches are placed? Maybe a cut off line there?
When a cache is submitted the coordinate lands inside any known zipcode which will generate the city and or town name, this may be the reason for the name difference. I'll forward this info to the brain gods and see what their opinions are. :)

Wait, I just found it,

THe zipcodes listed are different for both caches, which means that I put it one zip code and the owners of the different cache put in a different zipcode.

Being lazy I just use my houses zipcode (which is still weird it's wesslyville since my mailing address is an Erie address and I live in Harborcreek (township beside wesslyville) but hey. I figured there had to be some kind of "City" field you typed in and there it was (sort of right in front of me) it was the zipcode (field).

"When a cache is submitted the coordinate lands inside any known zipcode which will generate the city and or town name"

umm does it auto generate the zipcode or is it the one we typed in.  If it doesn't autogenerate a zipcode based on the coordinates given then that would be a nice feature for the next round of upgrades.  :D

Ohh yeah, also completely different topic (in the wrong place) any idea what happened to the chat room last night?

Quinn is correct.  :^:

A zip code is automatically generated from the coordinates if the cache hider does not enter a zip code.

The city is automatically generated from the zip code if the cache hider does not enter a city.

Wasn't that a fast implementation of your suggestion?  :p

Quinn's "Sprucewood" cache, which is in Churchville NY, and my "Hawthorn" cache show up as being in Clifton, NY, which hasn't had it's own post office or zip code for 20 years (it uses Churchville's post office).  I wonder if the database you're accessing is up to date?

Great feature. I've never entered ZIP code or city for any cache. I figure if I give lat/lon that's enough of a hint. ;-)

hmm, I had originally thought maybe I entered the zip code, so I went back and edited the cache wiping out the zip code, but it's still showing up as wesleyville,  (or does it not work after the cache has already been listed?)  Just trying to break things  ;)

You are correct for the most part, but actuall I wanted to confirm my "Sprucewood" caches location so i did a search via Yahoo and three other mapping programs for the location of "Clifton NY" and it dumps a marker extremely close to where my cache is placed. The only thing I can think of is that Clifton is a name of a very small community that uses or used that zipcode, so I would have to say that my cache is named correctly as for the the clifton portion.

Now your cache on the other hand shares the same zip code as mine and i think the reason of it not being changed is why yours also falls under clifton. I'll have to look into this a bit further to see what I can uncover. :)

The data base is internal.

The raw data came from the Census Bureau... from your observations, it must be circa 1980! :p

The look up code has not yet been implemented in the edit cache program.

I was hoping you wouldn't find it that quickly! :p
