This was an unfortunate choice for the default behavior. If you support HTML formatting, you should stay true to HTML. If there's a way you can offer an option to let users change the rendering behavior to true HTML, that would be great.
It was actually a choice made after polling our users (in the beginning). Many felt the original form requiring them to know some HTML basics was no good as they knew nothing about HTML.
Plans are to allow members an option when submitting a cache listing.
