Hi
My wife says I've been good this year so she will let me get a laptop for Xmas :D . My concerns are what mapping software is the best for a 'low-tech' type guy. Any recommendations? I assume I will need some type of GPSr & cable to hook up to computer.
I hope this is the correct forum for this.
Thanks

Congratulations.

My preference leans towards topograhical mapping software, such as DeLorme's TopoUSA.

Another option is for you to get the Garmin maping software that is compatible with your GPSr... unless you are also getting another GPSr (and cable). :grinnin

BTW - Some laptops no longer have serial ports, so Santa may have to add a USB to serial port converter. :;):

A 1/1 via the trail around the hill?
Nah... that's too easy! áLet's go up and over!
Why follow a trail when we can blaze our own? :p

Thanks for the reply. At first, I thought no one was home here.
I hadn't thought about the serial/USB 'stuff'. Thanks for that reminder. I have a Garmin Venture...do you suggest Garmin mapping software?...or will something like DeLorme work too? I would assume (?) the DeLorme will work with my Venture? Remember, I'm 'low-tech', so hand-holding & one syllable words are encouraged!! :D And, I'm open to any suggestions.

Also, are you familiar with the Garmin 18? It's supposedly a unit for laptop and I think (?) it comes with the nRoute software..any ideas on this unit & software?
Thanks

I was thinking the same thing. :(

I've been back for a week (and hopefully to stay, this time around) and am slowly working my way back towards geocaching. :)

The Venture doesn't accept map downloads, so the Garmin mapping software would not be an advantage.

Some of the Garmin (and Magellan) units have memory in them to accept downloadable maps, so you could download a map from the laptop into the GPSr.  Only in this situation would Garmin (or Magellan) mapping software be of any advantage.

DeLorme software will work with any GPSr, but it would be for laptop use only.

That looks like a nice USB GPSr.  You can find a review of it at http://gpsinformation.net . :)

Another option is to purchase another hand held mapping GPSr, one that you can use with or without a laptop (caching with family/friends). :)

Lot's of choices, and lot's of reading over http://gpsinformation.net :)

Have fun!
