Fellow cachers: Another Picnic - you betcha.

Here’s the latest scoop direct from your southern news correspondent Road Kill.

Gamma Kitt & Coyote have reserved an enclosed pavilion at Letchworth State Park for a “Fall Cachers Gathering”. They have it the whole day October 5, 2002 and can open the doors at 6 AM and close at 10 PM. We are racking our brains coming up with all sorts of ideas and want to blow it by a few others.

The Particulars:
There are 8 cooking surfaces (built-in grills) under roof.
There is a big fireplace, and running water outside.
We will be allowed alcoholic beverages in moderation.
There is a play ground for the young ones and a field for other activities.
And of course it’s in Letchworth State Park at a time when the fall colors will be coming on.

Ideas:
Because we can start at 6 AM we can do a breakfast as well as lunch.
It will still be a “Bring a dish” type picnic like the one we just had.
We are working on some special events as well. (maybe to do with caching. Ya think?)
Not to stop there, we are looking for all kinds of ideas.

So what does everyone think?
There will be an event cache listed soon.

Road Kill, Gamma Kitt & Coyote - All Girnning

Sounds like a blast! It's a little far for me to hide a cache beforehand, so don't count on one from me. Maybe some of our southern neighbors will do one, and I can participate in this hunt this time. :)

Sorry to hear about the 'girnning'. Have you guys seen a doctor?  :p

Count Me and MRS Rocky in!!!  It could not be in a more beautiful place or better time of year.  I wonder if we should promote it as a New York State Geocachers Meeting. It would  be nice to draw a few of our Eastern neighbors in and this World Class Venue might do just that.

And, this is serious, maybe you can also invite a ranger by to talk to the group as well? A little two way would be good, I'd think?

Letchworth is a great spot and a NY state wide call for cachers would be something worth considering..

Sounds great.......Could we work a quilt into this one?

I've been asked to do something for the fireman and policeman who died on 9/11.........I had gone to a web page with ideas for quilts specifically for them and found that I all ready had patterns that are listed there........

I've been wanting to make up a "delictible mountains quilt"...that would be cool to reflect the fall colors of Letchworth in......

But I could also work up a signature block quilt in fall colors......and give blocks out there for cachers in the group to get signed........The quilt could be givne to the park and hopefully displayed........as another way to promote our sport....

Just an idea

"Letchworth Fall Cachers' Gathering" is posted  :oo:
Go there to sign up - come here to brainstorm. No ideas are too silly. I'm mean we're talking about geocachers here. :withstupid

One of the things I was kinda hoping that we would have had at the June Geocaching event was some sort of treasure hunt, where we group cachers together in teams (maybe teams of 5-7) and have an area treasure hunt.

It would have to be a little challenging, such as using riddles, encrypted hints in caches, etc. to make it a little harder & challenging!

Maybe each team is given 5 points to navigate, each is linked to the other (i.e get the next coordinates from point you just navigated to). The last point is a common point for all teams & the first one to the point gets the cache contents?

Maybe we can get Quinn to "donate" another GPS unit as a prize for the treasure hunt? I think that would be pretty cool! I'd be happy to help set this up with the help of one or two others!

Let me know what you think!

Geez, I set up a hunt with ONLY ONE point, and everybody had trouble enough with that!!!! :)

In case nobody else has noticed, Jeff "GeoRiddler" Tielde has logged that he'll be at the Letchworth get-together. It's been quite a while since we've heard from him, & it'll be great to catch up with him again & see what he's been up to. A big croud looks to be in attendance. Should be a great time. :grinnin

:grinnin   A good time you betcha. A big crowd - We have 107 counted in for the picnic and 30 for the dam tours (still more room for the tours). Games, Prizes and (weather permitting) a teathered balloon ride.

Possible needs:
We have 3 cases of pop (72 cans) - Could use more
We have about 7 doz burger rolls – We need another 3 to 5 doz
Catsup, mustard, & relish are needed
A bag of ice or 2 would be a good idea.
More hotdogs and Hotdog rolls is also a good idea
I think more charcoal would be good too!
Grill tools; We have 2 of the flipper things for holding about 6 to 8 burgers or hots, & 4 pair tongs.

We have:

120 burgers, hots & rolls, cold cuts, deviled eggs.  Road Kill will up his burger ante based on final numbers.

Desserts: a Birthday cake, a Geo cake, sheet cake, strawberry kiwi dessert, dessert?, cookies,& brownies.

Soups: Chili and chili bowls

plastic utensils 2 offers  and plastic plates, 2 offers

Salads: 2 of 3 bean, 2 of Pasta, potato, fruit, chef, Ceasar, and macaroni

Veggies: Baking potatoes, 2 of Baked Beans, Veggies & dip

5 bags of charcoal & 1 lighter fluid

2 bringing trash bags, 1 for paper towels, 1 for  napkins,

We now have access to 2 coffee pots (A 100 cup, & A 45 cup) and coffee, Decaf & Reg., half/half, sugar, & equal

1 bringing firewood for the fireplace.

Looks like we are going to eat well and stay warm if it is cold.
see you all there

Figure me for 6 cases of assorted pop & 6 bags of ice. Anything else needed when it gets down to the wire, I'll assist

Hmmmm.....Sonya (who will be going to the picninc with me), works at the Park. I'll ask her if she wants to mention it to some of the higher-ups.......

She works directly for the Park Manager, of all people.

I am looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
I will be there around noon and have some prizes that will be up for grabs.

I'll try to bring other things I think may come in handy as well.
The weather is supposed to be dry for the most part and seems like a nice day is in hand.

  :(
Unfortunately it looks like I'm not going to be able to make it afterall, due to work screwing me at the last minute.  Basically I have to work Sunday evening and I can't justify the 3 hour or so drive out there and then a 3 hour one back.  I have thoughts of not going in since I put my two weeks in already, BUT the last thing I need is a bad reference.  Maybe something will change, who knows.  Majorly bummed because I was really looking forward to meeting everyone, and I was already to win a new GPS since mine pretty much crapped the bed.  Ahh well, hopefully I'll get to meet all of you at some spring caching event.

Mike,
I hope something comes up where you will be able to make it. I was looking forward to meeting you since I missed you the last round. See what you can do!
it'd be great to grab a cache or two with ya along the way. :)

I just wanted to say Thanks to everyone for showing up at the Letchworth Park Geocachers event. I have updated the < NEWS PAGE > on the main page of this site to show some pictures from the event as well as thoughts.

I hope everyone had a great time and I look forward to the next event!

Great time. Nice that Navicache, thru Thales & Sundance, was able to provide such nice prizes fo the "dash for cash". Just 2 questions. Who's the girl that won the gps & who brought the Navicake? Cake was way cool. :grinnin

I'm touched...but you knew that.  :p
Tears came to my eyes...thinking there might be ice cold Canadian ale in that cooler.  :love
I haven't gotten this much attention since NaviCaching here in India & getting stopped by the authorities to insure that my electronics were not Pakistani military  :0

I'll be back, but until then, I'm spreading the NaviCache word across India with additional stops planned for Amsterdam & Singapore.  :wave

Yardboy it just hasn't been the same here without you to compete for first log book reports and finds. I hope you can make the next event to help us along with those Geo-George's! :p

The cake was VERY kindly provided by the "upinyachit" gang, as well as their very sweet daughter found a way to keep my daughter (Morgan) happy and busy for the day. Thank you very much for everything.

Ya know I never did get that little girls name that won the GPSR. I will have to see if Mike has it so I can place a report with it ???

Darn. Where were you team upinyachit? I still haven't met you folks yet. Guess I should have asked around. I'll catch up with you somewhere. Great job on the cake. Great to hear from you too, Yardboy. Can't wait till you get back this way. Sorry I missed you that weekend you made it in. At least you made it to both meetings in spirit. We'll have to use another pic at the next meeting, though. We don't want to give the impression that you're always wearing a tie. :grinnin

We were a couple of tables behind the raffle table.  Sure wish we were behind you when you were buying the raffle tickets!!  LOL  That cake did turn out really nice, didn't it?  It was so nice to see everyone meeting everyone.  We managed to talk with Rocky, On a mission, Roadkill, Hinge Thunder,  Quinn, and many more.  Boy, Gamma, you all know how to give a party!  :^:

Thanks to everyone for a great time!  It was well planned and well worth it.

Can't wait for the next one, but in December?  Brrrrrrr!

Sounds like a great time, wish I couldn've been there.  But like you said there's always the springtime.  Hopefully by then I should have a real job as well with weekends off.  Who knows maybe I'll even end up out your guys's way while I'm waiting for a job.

:^: What can I say?  We needed to start early to get another nice pavilion at Letchworth for our second gathering.  Everything is all set for October 18 in another large pavilion close to last year's gathering.  The new coordinates are:
N 42 43.656  W 77 55.368  .  To get all the current details you can also look it up in "Caches" for zipcode 14530.  It should turn out to be even larger than last year.  If there is any part of this gathering you are willing to be the coordinator of; let us, Gamma Kitt & Coyote or RoadKill know.  Gamma Kitt & Coyote   :wave
