Posted by cujosquire on April 03 2005,2:19 pmAnyone know where I can find the basemaps for Magellan Sportrak Topo?
Says Unit Currently Contains No Map, So I am assuming that I need to upload new basemaps. This has happened in past and magellan fixed it.
I used the GPS twice and it happened again, they refuse to replace unit but to only replace the basemap again. I just learned that you are able to upload basemaps but problem is I don't have mine backed up. Where can I find it?
Posted by PC Medic on April 03 2005,2:29 pmBasemaps are copyrighted works and only 'legally' obtainable through Magellan.
Posted by cujosquire on April 03 2005,2:30 pmwell they shouldn't charge me again for something i already paid for, and ur just saying that because your site had LEGAL issues in the past
OH AND BTW, glad to see you answer posts but not inquiries via yahoo messenger... you can delete aaronsquire user account on this forum, your site never sent me confirmation email so had to start another account.

I am saying that because it is fact. Also I am not sure where you got your information about any 'LEGAL' issues in the past, but I suggest you use a new source as your current one is obviously very unreliable. There never has been any such issue and we actually work quite closely with Magellan from time to time.
Now if you are within warranty then you get what the warranty would cover. If basemaps are corrupting I would bet they will fix it for you. If you are out of warranty, then you will pay for service just like anyone else I suspect.
I also would like to know how would I possibly answer a Yahoo Messenger post I never received? I answered this post as I (as part owner of the site) tend to come here a bit more often than hanging on Yahoo.
I also see that email confirmation for 'aaronsquire' was sent out to the email address you supplied and bounced back with a 'Mailbox Unavailable' error.
Perhaps before you assume so much you should ask.
Posted by cujosquire on April 03 2005,3:03 pmI did ask, and you didn't respond. It's hard to respond by any other means when all other options such as email are blocked. Yahoo was your only available messenger I had. So sorry for trying my only options and informing you of extra account that may clutter your forum. Just trying to help.
I should have stated that, email was not receieved instead of site did not send it.

cujosquire (9:34:13 PM): i signed up for navicache forum, never received confirmation email... tried to change my email or have another one sent, can't find the link to have this done. I was able to change my email address to new address and it sent me a confirmation email. I click on the link and said email was changed. however i still can't access anythign on the forum other then read it. how come i can't post or reply to messages?
Were you, or were you not asked to remove magellan basemaps from your site in the past? This may not have arose into a full legal matter but you were hosting copyrighted material.
Magellan did fix it in the past, took me 3 months to get them to accept the unit between the foreign lady on telephone telling me she didn't know to them not returning phone calls. Finally got a nice gentleman to return an email and was able to get the unit fixed. Used the unit twice and it crashed again. Just spoke with them on the phone the other day (thursday or friday). They said the extended 90 day warranty they gave me on the unit does not cover the corrupted basemap, only hardware. That it will cost maintenace fee of $60 plus I have to ship it.
So now i'm at the point, why should i ship it back to them again. it crashed after two more uses, it must obviously have more wrong with it that it loses the map. Now I'm trying to figure out how to upload the maps myself.

And we do appreciate your letting us know there 'MAY' be a problem. I am not what is meant by 'email is blocked' unless you mean in my personal profile, where yes it is, for obvious reasons. Of course the best option to make contact for something like this (support issue) would have been < HERE >.
Again, this was sent to my Yahoo Messnger account and I very rarely ever go there. If you have questions or difficulty on the site, I would suggest the official contact page vs. a personal message to an offsite account.
I believe if you look through our forums (as you obviously have) this question has already been answerd by my post of a couple years ago that states "the basemaps are no longer available and have been removed at the request of Magellan".
Again, no 'LEGAL' action prompted this and if I felt it was necessary (which it is not) I would have posted a copy of the email from our Magellan contact at that time. As I said before, you should refrain from assumptions.
Curious, did you explain this was an ongoing issue (same issue) as before. The fact that the basemap keeps getting corrupted 'may' indicate a hardware issue which would then be covered. Now if this is happening as a result of trying to upload or alter the basemap (they can tell) then this probably would not be covered.
Uploading it is not the hard part, obtaining it is as they (Magellan) now frown upon distribution outside their support department. I will assume you did not have a back-up of your original basemap?
Posted by cujosquire on April 03 2005,3:50 pmno I don't have a backup, I didn't know it was possible until i started researching it since the GPS done this again. Just trying to find all my options.
Posted by cujosquire on April 13 2005,5:29 amI have contacted WV consumer protection with proof of previous contacts of magellan, they informed me to attempt to contact them one more time and to let them know that consumer protection had been contacted.
Magellan must respond by April 15, 2005.
I never wished to go this route and very dissastisfied, but this has deemed itself necessary as the 1800 number would hang up when trying to call, two previous web requests and an email to firstname.lastname@example.org were not answered, and I had similar problems contacting them last time the unit had issues.
Just wanting to let everyone know the troubles I have had with Magellan Products and their customer support. I will never buy their products again.
COPY OR ORIGINALLY SENT TO MAGELLAN
This same unit is giving me the same message again...
"Unit currently contains no map!
Initiating Map Upload"
Does this mean the GPS is corrupt again? This was only the second time I used it since it's return. I saved locations, downloaded them to the PC, then uploaded some benchmarks from PC to unit so that we could locate benchmarks for a survey. When trying to power on the unit, the unit would not turn on. I then changed the batteries, pressed the power key and it turned on and stated that it was waiting for map upload.
FYI, YOUR 1-800 NUMBER IS NOT WORKING
Posted by PC Medic on April 13 2005,5:06 pmYes this type of action would always be a last resort and sorry you felt the need to take this action.
I was actually quite suprised to see this post as I have always found their support line quite helpful and easy to contact when needed for questions on various units (and yes, I use the same number as anyone else).
Because we work with them from time to time I felt as a service to our members I should verify what I could. I tried twice today and both times was able to reach Technical Suppport in under 2 minutes. So it does in fact appear the 800 number is working.
Hope everything works out for you.
Posted by cujosquire on April 29 2005,5:15 amSo how do you backup the basemap. Having a hard time finding software that works.
Posted by cujosquire on May 01 2005,6:36 pmahhh nevermind, figured it out now
Posted by ve1fsm on Feb. 25 2006,5:47 amI don't know why you would have to pay! I just done my friends Sportrak map (took him less then 24 hours to mess it up) After searching for hours we called Magellan Tech support at 1-800-707-9971 (had to wait about a hour on hold) but they email the basemap to us and I fixed the Unit. Below is a email that tech support sent me because it is possible to mess up the GPS without corrupting the Base Map. Here are the instructions for the Sportrak Map but I'm sure you can find the directions for the Sportrak Topo at their website!
Email From Magellan
In order to fix the problem that you are experiencing, you would need to follow the following instructions for Expert Upload:
Download the latest software upgrade for the SporTrak Map from our website
<http://www.magellangps.com/en/support/software.asp> Select SporTrak Map and finally software upgrade and download. You will need to PRESS AND HOLD, PLUS MINUS and WALKING MAN to turn your unit off.
Before you upload you will need to put your unit in "Software Upload Mode" by pressing and holding GLOBE MENU and POWER.
Once the file is downloaded into your computer, unzip it and open up the MAGUP file and select "NO" on the automatic upload window.
Select EXPERT from the toolbar, on the EXPERT SET UP window, on unit type select SporTrak Map, then select your COMPORT that you're using and expert upload ON and press OK.
Select UPLOAD from the tool bar, select "Program code only" and then on
upload file window, select UPLOAD FILE. The map upload process should
End of Email Message
If this does not fix the problem then there is a second part they can send you (the Basemap and the Instructions). We spent more time on hold then what it actually took to fix the problem and I now have the Sportrak Map Base map compliments of Magellan (Free of Charge) and with 2 Sportrak maps will be backing it up.
By the Way I don't work for Magellan, just a happy Magellan customer that got great support after the purchase!
