Posted by Brogan on Jan. 29 2003,7:17 pmAnnouncing the 1st Annual CannonBall Run TravelBug Race.
Rules are simple:
Get yourself a set of TravelBug tags, (avalible from Groundspeak) and attach them to a race vehicle. Include whatever instruction you feel are necessary.
Send it to me via snail mail at:
1242 Graff Rd
Attica, NY 14011
I will "grab" it and hold it for release at a local caching event on March 8th, 2003.
Bugs are allowed to travel only one state at a time, and the states must share a common border, any bug that skips a state must backtrack to the last continuous state it was in (not necessarily the same cache) and continue from that point. Same holds true if the bug leaves the country.
You are allowed to move your own bug if possible, you are allowed to misdirect someone else's bug also but you are not allowed to "kidnap " or "trash" someone elses bug.
Endpoint for the race is Pheromone Cache near Ripon CA, Waypoint GCBFEA Zipcode search 95366. First TravelBug to log into that cache wins. The GreenAchers are the final judges and will declare the order of arrival.
Winner receives a trophy, and certificates will be awards for other catagories ie: most miles traveled, fewest states visited, most cachers logging the bug etc.
Anyone wanting their bug returned to them after the race needs to include a mailer envelope, prepaid from the above ZipCode. Otherwise the bugs will be re-released from Pheromone with their race directions removed.
If anyone is interested they can check out the thread at Geocaching.com under TravelBug Forum also.
Good luck in the race, and have fun!

I hope your post isn't just spam to make money for geocaching.com. Is there a way to participate that doesn't require sending money to geocaching.com? Say, by using Navicache hitchhikers or Geolutins?
Posted by PC Medic on Jan. 29 2003,9:48 pmFearing that it would not be accepted here Brogan approached us (owners of navicache.com) via email prior to starting this topic. After a couple emails to confirm what he was planning we gave him the
The concept I think is quite interesting and not much unlike the old "Tortise and the Hare" cache that was launched here a while back, but with some added rules to add to the difficulty level.
While it would be nice if it were open to non-bug entries, this is Brogans cache (race), so we will have to live with his rules. Best I can tell this is simply to make tracking easier and not a plot to steal revenues from the Dollar Store
Posted by YardBoy on Jan. 30 2003,3:20 amI prefer to get my unique, number-encoded, hitchiker via the BEP (Bureau of Engraving & Printing). And much easier to snail mail to Attica, NY.

Posted by Brogan on Jan. 30 2003,7:50 pmAs this is the first run of what is hopefully going to be an annual event, I am limiting it to TravelBugs only for the exact reason PC Medic assumed. Hopefully once the "bugs" are worked out we will open the race up to any and all bugs, travellers, whatever...but that is something for next year.
I hope I haven't offended anyone by posting this here, just wanted to give you all the chance to particpate.
