Topic: Promoting Navicache

Posted by Guest on Sep. 19 2002,7:50 pmWhen Candie logged her first wheresgeorge dollar, she followed the link to Navicache.com. The Hughes family changed forever.
Now we have a wonderful hobby and are always looking for new members. Just so they can experience the fun and excitment like we do.
Upinycachit knows there is alot of Navicache members out there already and maybe it's not our say to promote or advertise this site. My wife Candie and I have different opinions about this topic. She says just enjoy the site and not promote it too much; except for friends and family.
I say promote or advertise Navicache.com as much as possible. After all, that's how we became members!
I am in no way saying to place a Navicache.com advertisment in your local newspaper, but I know there is alot of other ways to spread the Navicache word around. I just don't know if it is appropriate or not. I would love to give my suggestions, but my wife Candie thinks I should cool it on the forums and just go find a cache.

With having no replies and only about 34 views in over a month, I say more advertising would be cool. We have no problem with our close community geocachers now, we just say more members the better. If a member feels we don't need to advertise Navicache for whatever reason, feel free to give your opinion here.
We understand that Navicache hasn't had too many caches stolen or trashed. Inviting or "advertising" could jeopardize the stats, however, we don't think that's the case.
In conclusion, we just want to see this site grow.
How about renting some billboards? I know when I'm stuck in traffic on 490 or 390, there is nothing else to do but read billboards.
The Navicache logo would look cool all blown up.
Posted by Cracker7M on Oct. 30 2002,11:10 amHey Quinn,
How about some Navicache.com stickers?
I see you've got tees up on the home page, but how about some other stuff?
I like stickers....
I'd put them on my Toyotas for everyone in the Southern Tier/Rochester areas to see!...
Posted by ohiocaver on Sep. 16 2003,7:37 pmHi everyone
I'm new to geocaching, and I am a member of both Geocaching.com and Navicache. I think that this site needs some advertising. I would love to see more geocachers using this fantastic site. I have just started buy adding a virtule cach . Geocaching .com would not even respond to me why my cach was not added, so from now on I will post my caches only on this site to help it along. I do think that bumper stickers and cach stickers would be good advetising.:0
Posted by PC Medic on Sep. 16 2003,8:59 pmWelcome to the sport of geocaching and to Navicache.
If you like the outdoors and a challange, you should have a great time.
Appreciate the Kudos on the site. Great bunch of people we have here and they are always ready to help out when you have questions. By the way, we do have T-shirts available and hope to have bumper stickers/window clings soon.
Posted by Bloencustoms on Sep. 17 2003,1:31 amI am very impressed with the forum here, it's pretty slick.
As for advertising, caches belong to the cachers, so why not advertise by placing the url of this site on the containers of caches listed elsewhere? The majority of cachers use gc.com, and cachers are the demographic you want to reach. The next cache I place will be listed on both sites, and it will have Navicache boldly emblazoned all over it.
Posted by Cracker7M on Sep. 17 2003,8:21 pmHey Bloen....thats what I've done, and will do.
I modified the Cache note from GC and included the Navicache link above the GC link, and in bigger font...
Posted by PC Medic on Sep. 17 2003,9:09 pmwhy modify when you can use < This One >
Posted by Bloencustoms on Sep. 18 2003,5:32 pmSlick cachenote! next cache I place, it's going in there. BTW a little preview of the cache I have planned can be found at < this link. >
I just need to find time to go place it.
Posted by Cracker7M on Sep. 19 2003,9:37 am
Didnt know that one was here!
I've also been modifying the "other" one by adding my contact info....ButI see you've already thought of that...
Posted by Bloencustoms on Sep. 25 2003,1:56 amJust had an idea, and it happens to be very on topic. I haven't yet explored all of the features available on this site, or looked at a premium membership. (Heck, I don't even know if such a thing exists) But I was thinking that the way to get more people to use this site is obviously to have more caches listed here. Looks like a paradox, but wait! If all things were equal and Navicache offered all of the same features cachers have become accustomed to, there is a way to get more caches listed here. Offer a discounted rate for members that bring xx number of caches over and place a duplicate listing here. Or, if a reduced rate isn't feasible, perhaps special features available to people who post duplicates of their caches here. Just a thought.
Posted by Cracker7M on Sep. 25 2003,5:58 amI think one thing I AM going to start doing is putting first finder prizes in my caches.
AND, I think I will start listing them ONLY on Navicache for the first month, before posting them on GC.com
Posted by PC Medic on Sep. 25 2003,4:54 pmBloencustoms : While you are correct and you are on topic and your idea would be a good one, we currently do not have any Premium Memberships here
and will always do our best keep that from happening.
What one sees here is what everyone sees here. The site is currently maintained by out of pocket funds, and the occasional donation from a member like yourself. That is not to mean we do not have incentives from time to time. In fact we once had a drawing for a Mag330 GPSr with each new cache submission resulting in an entry to the drawing. The more caches you submitted, the more chances you had to win.
Posted by TEAM 360 on Sep. 25 2003,8:34 pmGet a Navicache bumper sticker going, and I will put one on both of our cars! Now I have to check out the t-shirt!
Posted by woodsters on Sep. 26 2003,7:44 amHey PCMedic, do you mind if I place that stashnote on my downloads section on my site? Also if there are others that i could place there as well please let me know.
If you want to do the bumpersticker thing, let me know. I know a place, where I got mine done, that does great work at a great price. You can easily triple your investment(or more) into them with enough interest. Contact me if interested.
Posted by Rhinette on Sep. 26 2003,10:36 pmPosting the same cache on 2 sites will only add confusion to the issue.
My vote is for Navicachers to put a Navicache note or item in any cache they find and log that is listed on the other site. That will spread the word and open up a whole new list of caches to explore.....We need to keep this site fresh. I am happy to be a new member here. Placed one Virtual and will hide a Traditional tomorrow.......
Posted by PC Medic on Sep. 27 2003,4:45 am
While it is preferred that you 'LINK' to the one located here to prevent confusion should we make changes to it, you may also place it on your server for download.
Posted by TEAM 360 on Oct. 23 2003,4:08 pm
No, caches should be listed on ALL geocaching sites. Get the caches out there and visible, for people to go find. I couldn't care less about the online logs, even for people finding MY caches. I am happy to know that the info was out there, and available for them to find it. Look at Geocaching this way: if YOU are keeping track of your own finds, then it doesn't make a difference about where you get cache coordinates from, does it? If you signed the logbook, it's a "find". Period. No one can take that away from you, even if you don't log it online, or only log it online at one site. Keeping track of your own numbers gives you the freedom to go get any cache, from any site, and not have to worry about someone else keeping your numbers straight. I have all my finds listed on a WORD chart, and I can instantly arrange them alphabetically, or in order of find, with the click of a button. Even if I want to get caches from geocaching.ru (Russia) the next time I go over to Russia for a visit, I add them to my WORD document, and THEY STILL COUNT. (By the way, there are MANY more Russian caches listed on THAT board than on GC.com., so not everyone plays on the same board) Don't let getting "smiley faces" keep you tied to just one geocaching board....
Posted by Volvo Man on Nov. 13 2003,12:50 amI am currently working on some geocaching accessories, which I intend to sell for a small profit (but only small) to help support my hobby and a website I am working on which will be a resource for all geocachers.
what I am asking, is it ok to print the navicache web address on the product,? there will be a note on the product that it was produced by my site, but I would like to also put navicache's address on the product for people who find it but don't know about geocaching.
Posted by PC Medic on Nov. 13 2003,4:43 amI imagiine this would depend onthe individual product.
Requests should be made through firstname.lastname@example.org
Posted by Brobubba on Nov. 22 2003,11:23 pmThe question I have is this.... Is placing a note from one group in the cache of another group as a way of "spreading the word" in good form? As an example, I would think that Coke would not take kindly to Pepsi bumper stickers being placed on their vending machines. This could cause issues between the different groups if it is seen as trying to "take" users away. I would be very careful about that, as it can hurt the reputation of this site. Just a thought.
Posted by PC Medic on Nov. 23 2003,6:02 am
Well the problem with that analogy is that unlike the vending machines in your example the cache containers are not the property of the listing site, they belong to the cache owner. The poster also is not implying that he is going to start slappping bumper stickers on other folks cache boxes.
I myself have had no problem with GC branded Travel Bugs that have passed through some of my caches. I would hope no one out there was petty enough to even consider starting a fuss over such an issue.
Posted by Guest on Nov. 24 2003,7:22 pm
Take users away from what? That other site just may be out for profit. I wouldn't dare do such a horrible thing.
Posted by TEAM 360 on Nov. 25 2003,9:46 amDeleted. Obviously it was a controversial message for some, and I would rather delete the message than to let it continue to generate any negative feelings.
Posted by Volvo Man on Nov. 27 2003,6:13 pmseveral questions have sprung to mind reading this thread. Say for instance our efforts to promote Navicache were a huge success and suddenly GC.com cachers started cross posting in their thousands, would the NC servers be able to handle the increase in database size of an extra 50-70K cache listings? also, would the servers be able to handle the load of extra membership searching the database? If all this happened, how possible would site improvements be if the guys who devote their spare time to the running of this site were swamped with database management and cache approving?
Having said that, I really do want Navicache to grow to an equal level with GC.com and to offer geocachers a stronger alternative. I would suggest that Navicache encourage all of its members to leave Navicache calling cards (I'm working on a couple of designs) at every cache they visit. To this end, perhaps Navicache could provide a page on the site for Hi Res logos and design templates for calling cards.
Posted by PC Medic on Nov. 27 2003,6:50 pmWell we do currently offer a < Navicache StashNote > to be used by those placing caches that wish to notify finders of where it can be logged. The Hi-Res logos is something we can look into, but of course we can't just have a free-for-all on there use. Now while we are not a business looking for profit, it has been Quinn's pockets and a few donations that have paid all of the expenses of operating the site the past couple years. For that reason, I actually see us offering bumper-stickers, more shirts, and other such things instead for obvious reasons.
As for the "can we handle the growth", that would be something for another thread to prevent things from going off topic.
Posted by axcion on Nov. 29 2003,5:00 amIn my last two caches placed .....
There is ONLY a navicache.com stash note!
If anyone has access to a stencil machine.....I'd make use of it!
I always mention Navicache.com to other cachers I wander across!
Posted by Tahosa on Dec. 03 2003,8:39 pmI really like the Navicache Stash Note, and will put some copies in most of my Frog Caches when I go do some cache maintenance.
And after they've been maintained for the winter I'll start putting the Caches on both sites for awhile.
Maybe I should take them along when I go on the hunt and just drop them in the Frog's Caches just to see what will happen.
Posted by PC Medic on Dec. 03 2003,8:44 pm
While we appreciate the support, not sure this would make sense or be recommended. If the cache is not listed here it may do no more than lead to confusion and/or cause some to think it was pulled from our listings.
Posted by DustyJacket on Dec. 03 2003,9:50 pm
You might upset the cache owner.
It is the owner's prerogative to decide which stash note to use.
Posted by cachekidds on Dec. 31 2003,9:20 amI'd love to get some stickers when they come out!
