Just wondered if there has been any progress on the idea of creating unique numbers for travelers from the site and tracking them.

Yes progress was being made in this area, but due to health issues with one of our team there were some delays in implementing this as well as several other new features. I am happy to say we are again moving forward and several site enhancements will begin to show up in the near future. Behind the scenes work is already in progress to prepare for these changes.

One thing we are discussing regarding hitchhikers ("travelers" as you refer to them), is how to make tracking them seamless should one move to/from a cache that is not in our database.

I'm guessing to fully integrate would require cooperation that is not likely to happen   :(

Could you use a code at the start of the number, say GC for them and N for Navicache to differenciate between the numbers. That way travelbugs could use thier original number. Just a suggestion.
Shame it won't work the other way round  :D

It will be nice to set off a hitchhiker, I'll use the right term, without paying for it all the time.

Yes, cooperation would be a wonderful thing, but like you said....

The prefix codes is one method we have considered. This may be a perfect time (and topic) for folks to jump in with ideas because as I said, we are moving forward with this and other items again. Having an idea of what our members want is always important when any updates to the site are being planned.
