If you're like me and stop in here and frequently find no new postings, this is a place you can register your visit and just say, "Hi," along with anything else that is on your mind.

I'll start.  :wave  Hello!  I tend to check these forums every couple of days and am generally disappointed when I don't find anything new.

I figure that if everyone who pops in adds a reply to this thread, even if they don't have anything else to post, they'll be something to look forward to.  Even if there hasn't been another post since your last, feel free to add a new comment.

Did anyone else notice the site was down over Sunday night?

Posted by DudleyGrunt on Sep. 03 2009,1:30 pm
Just popped it to check.  Nothing new.   :(

Well Dudley, I will say hello to you! :)
Posted by DudleyGrunt on Sep. 04 2009,9:23 am
Hey, sabrefan7!  Thanks.  Does this seem like a good idea?

I did find another new post this time by yaesumofo - < finally found a home >.

Happy trails!

Please limit your comments in this thread to casual greetings or you may risk having your posts deleted.  If you have other things to say, please find an appropriate topic or start a new one.

Oh, btw, hello everyone!

Hello! I've gone a little longer than usual without checking these forums, I'll bet a month. I also have to cross-list a few caches, and log one on here. I'll get right on that (I hope).
Posted by DudleyGrunt on Sep. 15 2009,1:30 pm
Hey, there!  I'm trying to hold myself to only checking maybe twice a week, myself.

Thanks for posting.  It was nice to have something new.

Hey, all.  Popped in after the weekend saw no new posts.  I did  a couple of upcoming Maryland events to the < Calendar >, though.

Bump - Trying again.

Forums seem even slower than they've been before.  If you're stopping in here, not seeing anything new, and leaving.  Post a little something here and we can at least chat with each other.

I can hope.

I agree...I think the winter and all the rain on the west coast has things a bit slow.  :D

Yeah, I hope it will pick back up soon.  Hope all's well.

Howdy,
A quick stop by, I wanted to make a post in "other" GPS units. I have not been geocaching lately. Too busy with travel, brewing, and wasting my time on the computer.
C-Ya,
John

Yes, these forums seem to be a little quite. Not even the admins seem to login so often, according to their profile pages, which is kind of a problem when you try to get in contact with them.   :(
Posted by DudleyGrunt on Feb. 18 2010,5:13 pm
I've found the best way to get a hold of the admins (PC Medic) is to us the Contact Us link on the main page.

I've been assured that that there are many more visitors to the forums that the lack of new posts would indicate.  That's why I started this thread to offer an excuse to post and join in a conversation, even if there aren't any other new postings.  I figure that will, in turn, encourage folks to visit more often.

Hello!  Long time lurker, first time forum, um, speaker, I guess.  I, too, get lonely on this site, so I figured I'd better join in the conversation.  I'm from Minnesota, in the Twin Cities area and I think in the whole greater metro region, there are currently 4-5 active navicachers, including me.  So I feel pretty lonely caching in the real world too.  The laid back attitude this site has applies to real world caching as well.  A navicacher placed a new cache last spring and I wanted to go for it, but just didn't have time to get to that area.  Several months later, I found it and ended up being FTF!  Three months for a FTF seems pretty leisurely.  Compare that to the "other" site, where a new cache is often found within 15 minutes after being published (around here anyway).
So howdy, fellow navicachers!  I look forward to talking with all you.

So howdy, fellow navicachers!  I look forward to talking with all you.

Nice to hear, or see, someone else around here. I really appreciate to see a new post when I look here from time to time.

Speaking of real-world caching: there is exactly one navicache in the town I live in, mine. And it is the capitol of one of the US states ... The next after that seems to be active, but the only reason I know that is that it is cross-listed and gets logged over there. No log here so far (too far away to go there just for it). The next couple of caches are basically dead. They could be removed, but nobody seems to care. But enough wining.

I hope to get more navicaches around here, but I also feel that it would be better to pep up this site a bit more. And I am certainly willing to help with that. At the moment all I can do is bringing some life to the forum, so that is what I do.  :grinnin

Posted by Joukkusisu on Feb. 25 2010,9:42 pm
Ouch, that's rough.  At least there are still quite a bit of active navicaches within 20-40 minutes of where I live.  Enough to keep me busy for a little while.  Maybe I'll take up Dudley's project of cleaning up abandoned caches.

Speaking of pepping up the site, I'm taking an Information Architecture course and my class project is designing a website modeled after a real-world site that interests me.  I'm planning on coming up with a design as if I'm redoing this site, to see if I can improve the IA.  I don't know if I should share my final report with the Admins or not, they might not like the idea of someone thinking they can do better.  But it's a fun class and I think it'll be a fun project.  I'm working on a blueprint map of the existing site right now.

LOL...I am always checking in here...may not always login but do check in...and if any of you ever need anything feel free to e-mail me and it should drop to my cell phone.  :)

I can tell it's been the better part a week or so since I logged in here, there were 8 threads with even more posts!  It's been a busy week for me and I just haven't had a chance.

Quinn - I know you and PC Medic have mentioned that you guys check on the forums more than you post, but it is good to here from you from time to time.  Thanks for your work with the site.

Just to continue this thread: how was all your weekend? I had the chance to go to a geocache event and snatch another geocache on the way home. Other than that it was mostly time with the family and work in the garden. Oh, and barbecue at home, yummy. :)

This all then didn't leave enough time to hide my second cache, but the location(s) and container are all clear and ready, I just need the time to go there and hide it.  :grinnin

What about you?

Posted by DudleyGrunt on Mar. 14 2010,8:49 pm
A lot of rain here on Saturday, but it was dry most of today and I got out and had a chance to go out and grab a few of the National Park Service's Star Spangled Banner Geotrail caches and my first Get in the Game cache by National Capital Area Council of the BSA.  No Navicaches, though.
Posted by KFL on Mar. 17 2010,9:48 pm
I finally had some time today to hide my second cache (of course also listed here, but not reviewed yet). Now I am curious who is faster in reviewing: navicache.com or geocache.com (not that it would matter where I live).

And this is it: < N02CDF: Acrophobia >

We're having some great spring-like weather the last couple days and it is expected to last into the weekend.  Saturday is not only the first day of sping, but also the first day of < Cache Across Maryland 2010 >!  I have a committment at 4, but do plan to heading out to Maryland's Eastern Shore to get my first two (of 10) CAM caches and two more of the NPS Star Spangled Banner caches - among others, of course.

Posted by DudleyGrunt on Mar. 18 2010,7:17 pm
I believe PC Medic does them all.  It would be cool if an NC member could get FTF before GC approves it, but I know that's probably not likely.

Are you sure about PC Medic? I had the impression that he is really busy at the moment - yet the cache was approved very quickly.

Yes, I agree that it is not likely that someone logs it here as FTF. But as far as I know there must be at least one navicache member around which was active within the last year. However, he didn't find a navicache yet, nor was his cache logged here. So he is probably not active and I also don't know of any emails being send about new navicaches close to the home coordinates.

Posted by DudleyGrunt on Mar. 18 2010,8:49 pm
I'm pretty sure.  Of course that could be one reason he's so busy.  I believe he's the one that has approved all my events and my one virtual.

I included a link to the cache page on navicache.com in the cache listing on geocaching.com (as I did the other way around). Now I got a reviewer log stating I would have to remove the link or ask groundspeak for permission "I don't think it is appropriate to advertise their site on this site.".

I didn't find any section in the guidelines or anything else about such a ban, so I asked for clarification. I don't have much hope though. I know of quite some caches which include those links but I will now also not go ahead and point my finger to them, let alone that this would not be a reason to publish mine anyway.

Do I simply get a picky reviewer or is there really such a policy 'over there'?

Posted by DudleyGrunt on Mar. 19 2010,11:41 am
I'm not suprised, at all.  I guess they'd consider it part of their "no solicitation cluase".

GS is the only site of the three I deal with that has an issue with it.  TerraCaching actually has links on each cache page for Nearest Groundspeak, Navicache, and Terracache caches.  I definitely give TC kudos for that, as well as NC for not having a problem acknowledging the existence of the other sites.

I'm thinking of developing a multi / puzzle cache that used the same info found at some first responders / military memorials at a local cemetery, but would actully take you to three different final caches - one for each site.

Thinking the clue on GS would be something like "C TC N NC 2".  I'd have the corresonding clues on NC n TC, but I don't have to be as obtuse with them.

I've had this cache in mind for some time and event have a name, "Gratitude".  I expect that GS will not approve my write up that will include a statement of how we should be grateful for those that put themselves in harms way to keep us safe, especially those that have paid the ultimate price.  We'll see, though.

I guess you are right. I will not quote the respond without permission and do not intend to ask for it, but it basically says the following:
Navicache as they see it is a competing business. The navicache pages have donation solicitation buttons and navicache sells items here. Navicache does not have an advertisement agreement with geocaching.com, so links to it are a no-go.

Maybe navicache could somehow be officially non-profit, but I guess that is also not going to happen, although I doubt that it brings in more money than it costs.

Is there a non-profit, worldwide, cache-listing website at all, adhering to the idea of open content completely? Something like wikipedia for caches?

I've heard of reviewers refusing to publish caches with links to NC in the cache write up.  I wanted to gain some exposure for NC in my area when I put out some caches in NC.  I searched GS forums first and found threads about advertising NC on cache pages.  So I figured that was a no no there.  Of course, you could always add the links after it gets published, but someone might tattle on you.  I did include links in log notes on my other GS caches though.
Posted by KFL on Mar. 22 2010,10:01 pm
Adding the link after the cache has been published is not a good idea, especially now that I can no longer claim to not have understood that this is against the GS rules.

However, what GS could absolutely nothing against is navicache being mentioned inside the cache itself. I think about little cards for the finders to take away, mentioning the link how to log it here.

I agree with KFL.  I try to comply with their policies, even if I don't agree with them.  I might push the envelope sometimes on a cache submission, but I figure the reviewer is free to deny the cache at that point.

Info cards in the cache are a good idea, though.

Yeah, the stash note is probably the safest route.  I would bet including a navicache stash note in a cross-listed cache would probably gain the greatest exposure for navicache, perhaps more so than a link in the cache page or cache logs.  I've put out navicache-exclusive caches before, but now I'm thinking I might put a couple out that are cross-listed for this purpose.  I'm hoping to get more people in my area interested in navicache.

Still here.  Lurking as aways.  I just published a new Navicache:

It's a webcam cache.  There hasn't been one in the Twin Cities, at least as long as I've cached (not very long, but still).  I've decided I want to take advantage of the cache types Navicache still offers that the other site doesn't, such as virtuals, webcams, locationless, moving, etc.  I feel this is an opportunity to experience what I've missed out on.  Hopefully other navicachers will find them fun!

On your cache page if you click on the little 'camera' icon next to where it show the number of people spying on your cache it will take you to a list of the members that are watching that cache.

Now to be on topic...

How cool is that. Of course I know him, I found 43 of his caches to date. He also was at the last Baton Rouge meeting about three weeks back. Are there any Terracache geocaches close to Baton Rouge? If yes and he 'gets in' I know whom to ask for sponsorship.

Hmm, looks like I got to sneak in and look around. Just got my account. (on terracache.com)

I know this is the wrong forum to ask, but I don't know if asking this on the terracache.com forum would be terribly bright:

As far as I know you need two current members to sponsor you. The FAQ even has an entry "Why is it so hard to get sponsored?". It kind of makes sense, to keep "bad" guys out I guess.

However: I just created my account and didn't even ask anyone for sponsorship, but I already got two offers. I accepted one because I know the name from others (didn't meet him, but he is one of the well-known and respected cachers in the neighborhood state). But I don't even know the other - also from another state. So what is happening here? Should I be careful whom to choose to sponsor me? Why? Shouldn't that all start with a little conversation - to get to know whom you sponsor and such?

Posted by DudleyGrunt on April 05 2010,5:47 am
While there is a thread to ask for sponsors & introduce yourself, other users will see you listed at the top of their page as needing sponsors.  People close to you will see you first, then as time goes by, you will gradually be visible to people further away.

Even though, you already have your sponsors, I'd still post a greeting.

I still come here almost every day, but as I don't get to go geocaching a lot lately, so I also don't have to tell something.

I got two FTFs last week because they have been so close to home, but apart from that there was only one other find in July - and two in June. I hardly have time and/or the opportunity to come outside the empty 'circle' around my home coordinates at the moment.
