Forum: Just Getting Started In Geocaching
Topic: No caches in my area on this site

I'm thinking of dropping a few new caches around Charlottesville VA in the next few weeks. The other site has some listed, but I want to give this site a boost. I've got about 4 caches ready to go, just need to get out and do it. Been too cold for me though. Brrr. Anyway, I'll list a few of them on both sites, but I'm definitely going to make a couple of them Navicache listed only. Hopefully when someone finds one of my dual listed caches, I can point them over here with a note in the log book. Anyone ever try this? If so, anyone ever get blasted on the other site for it? They tend to get a little crazy over there sometimes. That's why I'd like to see this site really take off. Any thought or suggestions are welcome.

Now you know how all geocachers felt two years ago. Almost everybody who discovered the hobby at that time found that there weren't any caches near them. So, they placed a few.

Everybody wants their caches visited, but, in some ways, it's more satisfying when the hits are few and far between. I placed a cache 18 months ago (a vacation virtual -- try to get that approved on gc.com!). It gathered no logs for eighteen long months. Then, out of the blue, YardBoy logged it this week. It was a great feeling to hear from someone else who revisited that exact spot where I stood two summers ago.

So, if you really want to help Navicache, don't cross-list your cache on gc.com. Make geocachers come here if they want to hunt your cache. It may take them a little longer to discover it, but the satisfaction when they do will be so much greater. That's been my experience, anyway. YMMV. ;-)

It was more like "out of the white"... 165cm of fluffy, Alberta Clipper snow  :thumbs-up

I'm also against dual posting.  It breaks up the "story", the chronological continuity of the cache.  I've gone to a NaviCache based on FTF or hitchiker and been disappointed to eventually learn of missing info on the other site  :nono

I have to agree,  I come here to find other caches.  Not the same ones which are listed on gc.    So far there aren't any close to me here, but I keep coming back to look.  Maybe when the snow clears I will place one and be the first in this area.

Okay, I'll do seperate caches. But I'll still put a note in my GC.com caches that mention that I have other caches listed here. Try to get a little more traffic here. Cuz this site is DEAD.

LOL...we are greatful for the support though the word "dead" is a bit harsh. It may be slow in your area but in others it is doing very well. But people like you that try to help are great. It's just a matter of getting the word out. :)

I don't really think using the word "dead" is that harsh at all.  Most of the topics on this forum have not had replies in a LONG time.

In a way thats good. I would rather see people reply to a topic based on fact and not to just hop in and ramble on like in other forums.

The chat rom is for the rambling. :grinnin

hey, dont feel bad... there were only three navicache listings in my area, till I added 6 more (two duplicates and one Navi-exclusive)  Seems like a couple of the cachers in my org decided they did not like Navi back when they attempted to post some caches or to transffer custody of a cache or whatever.  Seems their 'elitism'  has poisoned the well, so to speak.  Never fear... i will have a few more local exclusives planted soon

I have some new caches in mind (I'm a little pickey about where and why to place them) and I plan on corss-posting some and only posting others here for various reasons.  Some of them I want the added exposure that the other site can offer because I want to draw people to those locations.  For the others, I'd rather boost this site and (at least for a little while) I'd rather keep traffic at those caches down to a minimum.

I wonder what would be the result if those of us that have GC caches left notes in the cache logs along with the Navi  home page addy mentioning that we also have Navicaches listed?  Wonder if that would do any good?

Several members already palce both the GC.com and Navicache.com versions in their caches, though I am not sure how many.

No. If you want to promote the alternative sites, archive your gc.com caches and list them only on an alternative site. Yes, you'll reduce the number of hits you get, at least at first. But as more and more people realize that they can't find all the caches on gc.com, they'll begin to look at alternative listing sites.

Well, you think I would have had that kind of response!   :grinnin
