How can I set up some type of automated .gpx file generation?  To me it seems painful to have to login, search, check a bunch of boxes, and so on to generate a .gpx file.

Is there a way to setup a filter once and then get a daily or at least weekly download without user intervention?

At the moment this is not possible.

We are currently working on several site enhancements and once this phase is completed, suggestions such as this can be considered for the next phase.

There is the XML download option which will allow you to filter based on date and such. Perhaps this may be useful until we have added new search filters and GPX options.

I don't know if you realize this or not... the entire cache database and logs have been downloadable in XML format since August 2002. :grinnin

Please see the XML Cache Data topic. :)
