|Hello, I'm a relatively new member (signed up a while ago, have added one cache). I like the concept of an open cache database, and I like the site as a whole, but I'd like to mention some things that I think could be improved on the website:|
First, Welcome to Navicache
Thank you for your suggestions also as without them we would not always know what members are looking for.
* The links at the top of the page keep changing as I navigate through the site, which is a bit confusing. On the main page there are 10 links in the table, but when I go to "MY NAVICACHE" there are only 6, "FORUMS" changes name to "DISCUSS CACHING", and "CACHES" changes to "SEARCH FOR CACHES". "FAQ's", "CHAT", "PHOTOS", "LINKS", and "CONTACT US" disappear, and "HIDE A CACHE" appears in the middle of the old links. When I go to the page for one of my caches there are again 10 links in the table, some of which are specific to that cache ("EDIT CACHE" and "ADD A LOG ENTRY") and a new link to "SCOUTs LEADERBOARD" appears. Would it be possible to arrange the links so that some of them are available on all pages, in the same order, and the page-specific links appear under them, perhaps in another color? This would make navigation a lot easier for new users.
This is actually in the works now and a much more consistant navigation menu will be in place soon.
* The multiple registration for the main page and the forums is a bit annoying. I know that the green site also does it that way, but it's annoying there too.
This is a pain we know and due (as with the Frogs site) to the fact that 3rd party forums scripts are used. They use their own database and complex scripts and sometimes seamless integration into the rest of the site is not as straight forward as one would hope. Weare working on this however and it is getting there, but still some more to do.
* How does the "State or Province" field work when you hide a cache outside USA and Canada? Is it completely free-form? If it is, I think it would be better to have a choice of regions for each country, or disable this field if no such list is available - people may not know what to put in this field (region, county, municipality?) and may spell it differently or add different prefixes or suffixes, which makes it difficult to search for caches in a given region. If you want to change this I'd be happy to provide a list of regions (or probably counties) in Sweden.
At this time, yes this is free form and for various reasons. In some counttries the locals in a particular region often refer to an area by different names than someone in another part of the same country may. For this reason we made the choice to go with a free form till a better method is developed. If you would like to provide info for your counry this would be most helpful as we are looking at more formatted options in the future as well. You may send them trhough HERE
Thanks again for the suggestions
