Is there a recommended way for adding logs to caches (without using the "Post a cache report" page)? I'd like to be able to use some scripting for logging finds and DNFs. I tried just copying the variable names and values from the form in the "Post a cache report" page and add it as POST data in a HTTP request for http://www.navicache.com/cgi-bin/db/savefindreport2.pl , but it looks like I miss something (maybe it checks for cookies as well?) because the logs don't "stick" on the cache page.

Is there a nice way of doing this? It would be cool to write a local client that downloads XML data for nearby caches perhaps once a day, and then lets you do elaborate searches on your own computer without wasting any bandwidth, and when you've found the caches you can log them locally and the client will submit the logs next time it downloads cache data.

While you can currently download cache lists in XML (not to mention LOC, GPX and GPSS) for local viewing, you can not (and should not attempt) logging the finds without logging into your account and using the appropriate form.

We will provide information here in the forums when such a feature is available.

Having a local client that could aggregate cache information from multiple sites and log to multiple sites in one operation would be a significant contribution to geocaching, imo.

GSAK already has the first half of this covered well. If it ever added the logging capability, we'd have a killer app.

I've never actually used GSAK, partly because I was a bit put off when I saw that it wasn't open source, and partly because I'm too lazy to make it work in Wine. I was thinking more like a tool that was integrated in a mapping or GIS program (for example as a plugin to Quantum GIS).

That would be a great foundation on which to build a local geocaching app. Because mapping is at the heart of geocaching it makes sense to start with a GIS program and add the rest.

Download GPX files from all the geocaching sites, keep track of them in your own local database, including map display. When you're ready to log them, use your local app, which knows how to log onto all the geocaching Web sites where the cache is hosted and submit logs to all the sites at once.

Keep it open source so the whole community can contribute to it and who knows how it'll grow.

Some very good ideas coming out here and it would be nice to see more input from everyone on this. This is how new features and applications are born  :thumbs-up

Also, because this is not currently a feature of the site and is more a 'wish we could' scenario, I have moved this here to 'Site Suggestions' forum where the topic is more appropriate.
