First off, I'm not an employee of Navicache.
With that said, I'm interested to see how many of us would be willing to pay for a "premium membership" and what we would expect to get for our money.
Obviously, this site is costing someone, and adding new features or services will cost them even more. GC has the "premium" membership feature, and I think it's a good value.
I would be willing to pay Navicache for "extra" features or services such as e-mail notification of new caches in my area, more info on the GPX downloads and a few other things.

No.

Personally, the division between "special 'Premium' people" and "lame cheapskate people" is the second thing that turned me off of "the other [commercial] site". (For the first thing, see my post in the "G.C. Forums Suck" [I didn't name it...] thread, elsewhere in the forums.)

This is not to say that this site doesn't "deserve" our support, but this is not a site that seems to be primarily a money-making venture capitalizing on geocaching, but rather a sort of "fan" site. To me, this attitude is one of the attractions of this site. Although the site owner(s?) do have a metaphorical gift shop set up where you can buy mugs, T-shirts, hats, stickers, and so forth, they don't prevent access to parts of this site from people who haven't (yet) sent them money. I would also be interested in seeing things like CD-ROM's with snapshots of the Navicache data in different formats, perhaps including legally-free (e.g. USGS topographical and aerial photo maps, road maps generated from US Census Bureau TIGER/Line data, etc.) and such available for sale to support the site. I suppose this sort of thing may be close to what you may have in mind.

Support doesn't necessarily have to be monetary, either - I LIKE the idea that if I want to help out this site, I could, for example, set up a "new caches" email alert site using the navicache data and make it available for other Navicache users, provided the Navicache owners didn't mind me doing so (from what I remember of the terms of use in the xml data, so long as I didn't set up such a service in a "tollbooth" format [i.e. pay me and then I give you access] this should be okay, though before I did so I'd check with Navicache about it). And on the other hand, if I want to support this site with money rather than a more direct contribution, there's no reason I can't buy some stickers, hats, mugs, T-shirts, and whatnot to either keep for myself or to use as cache trinkets...

So, in summary, no, I wouldn't be in favor of separating Navicache users into "Premiums" and "Proles" with different access to features based on who's happy and able to continuously throw money at the site for admittance into the Special group.[1] I WOULD be in favor of encouraging material contributions to the growth of this site (or sites, as the case could eventually be) in other ways, though.

[1] - I realize this is NOT actually what you are suggesting - it seems pretty obvious that you just want to support the development of additional features and growth of the site, not to exclude some people.  I just think that's what would inevitably happen if Navicache.com took this particular approach to doing so.

Mickemt is correct in that this site is costing 'someone' (be it in the form of cash or time spent working on scripts and supporting our members). He is also correct in that as the site grows, so do the costs. Epicanis is also correct (partially any way) in that we are not entirely focused on the "money making venture" aspect and do remain comitted to supporting  the sport. At this time our plans remain the same in that there are no current plans to charge for a premium membership level that would allow access to any particular caches within our database that another member would not have access to.

Of course as already pointed out operating the site costs, and as it continues to grow so do those costs. Yes, we added shirts, hats, etc through our CafePress shop, but this is not a real money maker and in fact, most items there are currently offered at or near cost. We do of course also get (and appreciate) the occasional donation, but again they alone simply have not been enough to cover costs and at this point the site continues to be a mostly an out of pocket venture.

We are currently working on some other options to support the site including our recent addition of our  LINK REMOVED. Not only does every purchase made through here get you a great deal on your  geocaching and other outdoor equipment, but it also helps support the site, allowing us to continue to grow and offer you the features you want, with no premium subscription required.

Doh! :p  You found an old link which I have now removed. We dropped that affiliate for various reasons and currently only have  our CafePress Shop and the donation link.
