Anyone check out Garmin's geocaching community called OpenCaching?

So far, I've found no real utility for it, since I've been unable to identify any unique OX caches in my area.  I've even posted to my two local caching organizations asking folks to post any.  So far, no responses.

I feel the same way about the Opencaching.us site. There aren't any original caches listed on that site around me. There is only one cross listed and I have noticed they are listing Benchmarks as virtual caches now...

I guess I'm just lucky that there are original OpenCaching.Com caches being hidden near me.

Yeah, depends on where you're at.  I do still see Garmin's active encouragement to have folks simply import their existing caches as resulting in a much lower percentage of original caches.  While OCUS allows crosslisting the stated preference is for original caches.

I've had one new (original) NC hide in the Washington area, recently, but missed my chance to try for it before winter really set in.  It's on an island in the Potomac, so I'll probably wait for spring and rent a boat to go for it.

Yeah I'm glad they allow cachers the option to list their data where they choose without encouragement or discouragement in regards to site preferences. It gives validity to the Open part of OpenCaching. Let the cacher choose without influence.

A good point.  However, doesn't making it SO easy to quickly import all of your hides from another site essentially encourage crosslisting?

Around here a much higher percentage of caches listed on navicache.com or opencaching.us are unique to those sites.   By making cross listing easy like they have done, it make their site much less useful and unique.

That has been exactly my point.  Since anyone who was simply curious about the Garmin site, could "publish" all their existing caches on OC.com in a matter of minutes (once they had their GC.com GPX file), many of the owners of caches on the site, may never have even visited the site more than once.  Even if they used it for a while, what are chance that when they get bored with it, they will update the Garmin listings, when things have changed with the original GC.com listing (including it being archived)?

Given how easy they've made it, I think the problem of orphaned caches at OC.COM will be greater than it has been here.
