hey there. I'm new to the navicache site, and found out how to download the cache pages in gpx format. I use these files for my paperless caching, yet when I open this file in GSAK, there seems to be no cache info at all. I tried both the GPX, and the LOC. Thx for any help in advance.

Are you sure there are any caches in the area of interest?

I can not recreate this problem when I just downloaded a few files.

If you simply double-click the .loc or .gpx file it should open in notepad (or similar). Do you see the cache information within the file itself?

I'm also new to Navicache, and am having a similar problem. I can download the GPX, but am not finding the info I expect. I see the basic info: description; location, etc, but do not see the detailed description or the logs. One I downloaded is Broad Lawns and Narrow Minds . On line I see everything, but not in the GPX. It seems like it's more of a LOC file.

TIA for any help

Same problem here.  GSAK is not showing the info I expect - no description, just the basics like an .loc file.  Any update on this problem?

I don't rely on the download buttons on the various Navicache pages. I agree with the findings here that you don't get all the information that way.

Instead, I construct my own download using something like:

http://www.navicache.com/cgi-bin....&logs=1

For more information about all the arguments, look for the earlier thread titled "XML cache data"

I am also relatively new to the site and assumed the lack of detail in the .gpx file was intentional.  Any update on the situation?

As another newcomer I'm glad to have found this thread. I'm a long-time Groundspeak member and am accustomed to getting GPX files with full info in them. Any update on when Navicache GPX files will have this?

As a workaround I've tried the XML version but can't get it to return anything at all. I'll post in that thread.

There are at least two problems with GPX files. The first is the one you described. The data is in the TXT files that are included in the ZIP, but I don't see an easy way to get that into GSAK.

It would be interesting to know if this works for anybody, and if so to try to understand why it's different for different people.

The second problem is that some caches have lat/long of 0.0/0.0. I reported this some time ago and gave an example. I was asked to try the download again. I found the example I had quoted was fixed, but all the other ones that showed 0.0/0.0 before continued to do so. No further fix was forthcoming, so I manually entered the locations for those caches and locked them so they didn't revert on subsequent imports. Far from ideal, I agree.

Not sure when you last checked those caches, but it was corrected shortly after you notified me and they are working on my end.

I did another download immediately after your first reply to me, in which the one I gave as an example was OK but the rest weren't. Unfortunately I can't go back to that specific download to check it again.

My most recent download, on 15th Jan 2009, which is the only one I can check now, contained 7 caches. 2 of these had lat/long of 0 (one of them being a cache I placed myelf).

        Sheep Walk by Amberel
        ...

Because the .txt files contain the co-ordinates I made the assumption it was a problem with the GPX export code rather than the database. But that doesn't explain why it is OK on some caches but not on others.

Is it the case that I should report such caches on a case by case basis?

Login to your account and go to your cache listing 'Sheep Walk' .
At the top of the page select the 'Edit cache' link. Scroll to the bottom and (even though you have made none) select the option to save changes. This will update the database and correct the 0/0 coordinates that appear in the GPX file. I have a general idea of what is causing this, but have not nailed down a fix yet.

In the mean time if you come across this the best thing to do is to contact the cache owner and refer them to these instructions. If you have trouble contacting them due to their privacy settings, then use the 'Contact Us' form and drop me a message.

Thanks, I've done that and will see how things go.
