CACHE LOGS - May contain hints(spoilers)!   decode

I found it! 10 Jan 2004    kosta river bridge  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2 )

Found this one in the dark tonight around 9pm. Had dropped off the River Rock TB in the I-380 Lakeside Bug Resort cache on my way home from Iowa City earlier today, when I remembered this cache. Since the River Rock TB wants to be placed in caches with the word River in their names, I picked it back up and headed down to this one. Looked all over, and was about to give up, when I took one last look in the area and happened to catch a glimmer off the lid from my flashlight. Let me say it is well camoflagued from winter caching in Iowa!!!
Took the Gamma TB and left the River Rock TB.

I found it! 10 Jan 2004    Lets Play Along!  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Stopped by at 8am this morning on my way to the Cache for Coffee meet-n-greet event cache in Iowa City. My GPSr showed different coords for the final cache. Will email Welch with my coords.
Great hiding spot and cool container. TNLN, as my item I brought with me was too big for the cache container.

Note 10 Jan 2004    I380 Rest Stop Cache  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 1 )

Stopped by here on my way to the Cache for Coffee meet-n-greet event cache in Iowa City. Grabbed Felix the Lucky Cat TB and headed out. Cache container still in dry and well camo'd condition.

I found it! 10 Jan 2004    The McToys & little stuffed animals cache  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 2 )

Stopped by this one after going to Iowa City for the "Cache for Coffee" meet-n-greet event cache this morning. Found this one around 2:45pm. The coords were coming up as 120 feet off according to my GPSr. Was gonna give up, but I decoded the hint and walked back up the hill and found it. Will post my coords I came up with. I only had 4 satellite signals, so maybe my GPSr was off, but if you get stuck trying to find this one, try using these coords.
Took the quarters out of this and put in a more "cache themed" Finding Nemo "Nemo" talking toy.

My coords were: N 41*26.913 W 091*51.121

Hope they help.

I found it! 27 Dec 2003    South CRT  ( Difficulty: 2.5    Terrain: 3.5 )

SECOND FIND!!!!
I FOUND IT, I FOUND IT, I FOUOND IT!!!!!!!

Well I will have to disagree on the time frame too, it took me 4 trips down from Waterloo over a months time to get this bugger!!!

Came down to Cedar Rapids today loaded for bear, was walking around number 7 point for about 15-20 minutes (my GPSr was telling me to go about 30 feet closer to the water than I needed to be) and was walking back up to the path to start over again when I saw just a tiny split second glimmer from the black tape on the container.

I was soo happy I could have cried! I took the final cache location coords from the thermos and headed straight to it with little problem. Took the Rams mini-helmet and the Hitch hikin' to Iowa TB. Left a bag of "Michelangelo" marbles for the master artist Welch and also left the Iowa Counties TB. As a final marker of my visiting the final cache, I left the last of our Rock Island Arsenal Museum pins my wife and I got while on our summer vacation this year to the Quad Cities.

Thanks for a VERY challenging cache!!!

Oh, and about 70-90 minutes is probably right for actualy time, as long as you don't get hung up on point number 7 like the rest of us dolts did!

Note 27 Dec 2003    I380 Rest Stop Cache  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 1 )

Eleventh cache I attempted while down in the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area today. Found this one around 3:15pm today. Took the Stimpy and United We Stand TBs and left the Alaska or Bust! TB in the cache. Hopefully by leaving it so close to the airport, Alaska Airlines will start flying into Cedar Rapids!!!
Thanks for the cache.

I found it! 27 Dec 2003    I Love a Pine Forest  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2 )

Third cache I attempted while down in the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area today. Found it around 10:50 am this morning. Tried the above coords, then when I couldn't find it, tried Welch's coords. Then when I didn't see it there, I looked in between the 2 sets of coords and there it was!! Hard to get a good set of coords though with that kind of overhead cover.
Was VERY tempted to take the patch Rooboy left (I'm a very big history buff), but settled instead for the US Flag sticker. Left a bag of "Milky Way Galaxy" marbles. Thanks for the cache!!!

I found it! 27 Dec 2003    Icepak's Point of View  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 3.5 )

Walked right back to the same spot and found it with no trouble this time. Don't know how in the world I missed it before!
My GPSr still kept saying it was about 60 feet off, so I posted the coords I came up with. I was using a Magellan Sportrak Map and had 7 satellite signals and WAAS was enabled.

Took the Travel Bug and left a bag of "Steely torpedo" marbles, just in case any submarines come along and need to resupply while they are out on the river/lake.

Thanks for the cache!!!

My coords were: N 41*46.954 W 091*33.830

Hope they help.

I found it! 06 Dec 2003    CPM-5 Kiwanis  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1 )

FIRST FIND!!!
Stopped by this one again after Welch sent me a photo of what the cache container looked like. Found the cache at about 7:30am this morning.

Thanks for the help Welch. I figured out I was about 30 feet too far east when I was here before.

Thanks for the cache.

I found it! 06 Dec 2003    CPM-4 Eden  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1.5 )

FIRST FIND!!!
Stopped by this one again after this morning about 7:40am and found it this time. If you go to the far back of the wooded area there are more headstones leaning up against a tree. Kinda eerie place. Thanks to Welch for going back and taking new coords. I'll post the coords I came up with in this log too.

Thanks for the cache.

My coords were: N 42*04.799 W 092*02.814

Hope they help. :)

I found it! 29 Nov 2003    CPM-6 Egge  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1.5 )

First of 11 caches I attempted today. Found this one at 9:45am this morning.
Cache is in good condition, except for the flaking Welch mentioned. It looked like a good idea, too bad it isn't working out. Coords were pretty good too.

No bushwacking required on this one. The mowed trails will take you to within about 15-20 feet of the cache. TNLN.

Thanks for the cache Welch.

I found it! 29 Nov 2003    CPM-7 B.L. Anderson  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1 )

Third of 11 caches I attempted today. Stopped by this cache around 10:15am. FIRST FIND!!!
There wasn't any pencil in the cache. The dang turtles must have taken it and hidden it somewhere! I cached in, trashed out on this one and picked up several blowing pieces of litter on my way back to the truck.

Thanks for the cache.

I found it! 29 Nov 2003    CPM-3 Big Grove  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1.5 )

Fifth of 11 caches I attempted today. Stopped by this cache around 11am. I posted my coords, my GPSr had 7 satellite signals and WAAS was enabled as well.
TNLN, but was interested to see that between Windchill's initial find back in October, and my find today, some hunters had found it on October 25th and signed the logbook.

Thanks for the cache.

My coords were: N 42*03.032 W 092*05.124

Hope they help.

I found it! 29 Nov 2003    Muddy Boots  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 3 )

Sixth of 11 caches I attempted today. Stopped by this cache around Noon. FIRST FIND since getting replaced!!
Should change the name from Muddy Boots to Soggy Boots. Found the cache dry and still hidden well. A very cool place for a cache. Will post some photos I took once my film is developed.

GPSr was showing about 40 feet to go when I was standing next to the cache, so I posted my coords my GPSr showed. I had 6 satellites and WAAS enabled.

Took the GPS food (AA batteries), since my Magellan was getting hungry. Left a wooden train whistle.

I walked the whole trail, as marked, and came out with very muddy/soggy boots to show for it. The lower end of the trail has alot of water on it right now.

Thanks for the cache Welch!

My coords were: N 42*01.967 W 091*46.008

Hope they help.

I found it! 22 Nov 2003    Quarry Me Confused  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1 )

Fourth of 6 caches I visited today in the Cedar Rapids area on an overcast, chilly, November morning. Found this cache around 10:45am.
I always enjoy going after Welch's caches, and this one proved to be another really neat idea for a cache. I got hooked on Welch's caches ever since I did my first one...Keebler's Cache. If you haven't done that one, I highly recommend it!!!

ANYWAYS....back to this cache. The cache was right where it was supposed to be, and by the title of the cache, as soon as I saw the hiding place, I knew that had to be it. Cache was low on goodies, so I didn't take anything, but left a first aid kit, a pack of glow sticks, a 2 part detachable keychain, and a glow in the dark skull ring. That should fix it up for the next finder.

I found it! 16 Nov 2003    Dead Road Bed Cache  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 3 )

Second of 12 caches I found today while in the greater Cedar Rapids area. Found this one around 11am.
Decided to brave the hunters and go after this one while I was in the area. Great old bridge. Loved the idea of chaining down the cache container too.

Took the "Magic Gloves" and the String Racer. Left a bag of marbles and a WG$. Took photo #8 left of myself holding my new string racer (or at least I hope thats how it turned out).

TFTC

I found it! 16 Nov 2003    ?Urban Trout?!  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 2 )

Last of 12 caches I found today while in the greater Cedar Rapids area. Found this one around 5pm.
Had no problem finding the first "cache", although the family playing in the park must have thought I looked a bit strange looking around all the trees/objects.

Liked the "challenge" of getting to the second part, although it is getting a bit slick near the far end. But I didn't want to backtrack and find another spot, so I took a "leap of faith" across.

Was disappointed to find that there wasn't a stamp pad in the letterbox container. I tried to improvise with my ink pen and a sheet of paper, drawing lines back and forth over and over to get ink built up on the paper, but it didn't work too well. <<<<edit 1/11/2004.....After emailing Welch, I now see why he didn't leave a stamp pad. Especially here in Iowa where the winter temps get too darn cold for the ink. Be advised that you will need to bring your own stamp pad.>>>>

Took the Pedro Martinez TB along with me and will try to get him to the minor league ball park in Waterloo, IA.

I found it! 16 Nov 2003    ICNC  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Eighth of 12 caches I found today while in the greater Cedar Rapids area. Found this one around 2:40pm.
Nice trails and walk in, although coords seemed to be about 40 feet off. I posted my coords that I came up with.

Took the book, and left a bag of marbles.

I found it! 10 Nov 2003    Distance Caching 101  ( Difficulty: 4.5    Terrain: 1.5 )

Finished this one today. Had everything done, except the last question, via internet searching and a few I just happened to know. But that last one is a REAL stumper. Had to email someone from the college to get the last answer, and then they spelled the last name wrong, so I had to go web searching again to get the proper spelling.

Great idea for a virtual cache!!!

I found it! 19 Oct 2003    Return to Bear Creek  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 1.5 )

Found this one today, first of five i did with Holly my pregnant geo-wife . We discovered this one about 1:30 pm. The hardest part was not attracting the attention of the kids playing in the park on the other side of the road.
Was a great day to cache and a nice little park, although the Creek could sure use some water.

TNLN, TFTC.

I found it! 19 Oct 2003    Pleasant Ridge Nature Trail  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 2 )

Found this one today, fourth of five I did with Holly my pregnant geo-wife . We discovered this one about 5 pm. Very nice little area to rest at, and would be a great place to come for a picnic. We scared up a couple deer while walking back to the cache as well.
Took the Stars and Stripes TB, left a Rock Island Arsenal Museum button that my wife and I grabbed while on our recent summer vacation there, and also left an Ace of Base Video tape that I found in a cache up in Waverly Iowa and wanted to share with all of you.

Thanks for the neat series of caches!

I found it! 19 Oct 2003    Multiuse B  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Found this one today, second of five I did with Holly my pregnant geo-wife . We discovered this one about 2:50 pm. We did the Pleasant Creek trio in reverse order, since we came in from the southwest. Had my blaze orange hunting cap on, since there were hunters out today.
Coords were about 95 feet off, and I posted my coords I came up with above. There were a lot of horse riders out today. Can't say I blame them as it was perfect weather to be outdoors. Took a glider toy, and left a mini-deck of playing cards. Took a picture of myself holding the cache container, and I believe the camera was on 10 pics remaining before I took my picture.

Thanks for the cache, and the VERY long walk around the lake to do all 3!

My coords were: N 42*06.502 W 091*50.453

Hope they help.

I found it! 19 Oct 2003    Multiuse A  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 2 )

Found this one today, third of five I did with Holly my pregnant geo-wife . We discovered this one about 3:35 pm. We did the Pleasant Creek trio of caches in reverse order since we came in from the southwest. What a LONG WALK to do all three on foot. But it was a gorgeous day to be outside, so I can't complain too much . I did have on my blaze orange hunting cap, since there were lots of hunters out today.
Cache is in good condition, and at a spot with a very nice view of the water. Coords are right on also. I took a photo of myself holding the cache, and the camers I believe had 19 pics remaining before i took my picture. Took a carabiner and left something, although I forgot to write down on my notes what I left. So consider it a surprise!

Helped a couple guys on horseback look for their missing dog for a little bit, but had to leave after they went riding into the thickets. Thanks for the very cool cache and all the exercise walking the perimiter of the water!

I found it! 19 Oct 2003    Hide & Seek - Palo Marsh  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 2.5 )

Found this one today, fifth of five I did with Holly my pregnant geo-wife . We discovered this one about 5:30 pm. We had the blaze orange hunting caps on, since there were a few hunters out on the marsh with decoys in the water.
Finding the first part was nice and easy, but the second coords we had to go to were a nice little hunt. I kept having to walk ahead to make sure we were headed in a "dry" direction.

I rehid the cache after finding it, but I highly recommend that you go look at the previous location written down in the logbook at the first cache. There is a HUGE tree that either snapped along its trunk, or was hit by lightning and twisted. Either way, it looks like it must have been quite an experience to see it come down!!!

TNLN, but what a neat place, and the only place in Iowa still that has living, biting mosquitoes!!!

I found it! 12 Oct 2003    Swamp Walk II  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Found today around 4 pm. Had to duck down and wait for a couple hunters and their dog to walk past while I was at the cache. I took a picture with the camera (the water is behind me and I have a tan cap on) and I believe it now has 11 photos left in it.
I've been to the Dudgeon Wilderness Area before, but it was nice to see a cache placed here. Was thinking of doing one here myself, but I guess now it's covered.

Thanks for the long walk in. Took the mini-cards, and left a 50 cent piece and a Rock Island Arsenal Museum button that my wife and I picked up on our recent summer vacation to the Quad Cities.

I found it! 27 Sept 2003    OCNT Cache  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 1.5 )

Final cache of nine I found today. Found this one around 5:30 pm. Parked near vinton and walked over a mile in. Wanted to stop off at the Benchmark along the way and log it too. Very nice trail, and an easy walk...
Took a 'biner and a multi-use tool, left a bag of marbles and a Rock Island Arsenal Museum button that my wife and I picked up on our recent summer vacation to the Quad Cities.

Thanks for the cache.

I found it! 26 Aug 2003    I380 Rest Stop Cache  ( Difficulty: 1.5    Terrain: 1 )

Second of 5 for the day on our way from Waterloo to the Quad Cities for a little mid-week vacation.
Stopped around 12:30, heat was bad but mosquitoes were no where to be found.
We had just pulled into the rest stop when the lawn care crew pulled in and started mowing! Was aweful nice of them to mow the path down for us.

Left Glug the Travel Mug Travel Bug, and O-Whistle the Travel Bug here. Took the wood and metal desk pen holder.

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Keebler's Cache  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

First of 7 caches I found today in the greater Vinton area with Navcb. Hit this one around 3:30pm. Mosquitos weren't too bad, but it sure was hot & muggy. We were hunting all over for this one after the long hike in, and then we both remembered.......Hey, it's called Keeber's cache. Maybe we should look in the trees to find it........ Was a good hide, and no racoons around it this year.
The shortest path from the parking area is definitely not the easiest path, unless you bring an amphibious vehicle!

Took nothing but left the Count on Me travel bug here. I figured those pesky Keebler elves could use it to count up all the cookies they bake.

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    More Power  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Fourth of 7 caches I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. hit this one around 6 pm. We were not the first ones to find it, but the geocaching.com patch from the groundspeak store was still there, so I took it. Left an x-treme breathmints package for the next fellow x-treme geocacher to come looking for this one......A good hide, nice to see Welch isn't the only one monopolizing the Vinton area. :)
[Modified 2004-01-11 08:43:59]

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Riverside Cache  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Third of seven caches I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. Hit this one around 5:30 pm. Was a nice, easy walk in from the sledding hills. I actually found this one before Navcb this time. There was still a little water in the container, so we emptied it out and sealed the lid extra tight.
Took nothing left nothing.

Nice little spot for a cache!

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Where we going now?  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Second of 7 caches I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. Hit this one around 5 pm. Funniest thing was finding the correct 2 dates to use. We got 6 sets of dates across the street from the ones we actually needed. Once we finally got them plugged in, it was off to the races. Was alot of fun, and if Navcb had not looked up when he did, we would have never found the right dates.
Took the pocket knife, and left an Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars keychain.

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Hoefle-Dulin Cache  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 3.5 )

Fifth of 7 caches I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. Hit this one around 7 pm. We've started to notice that Welch has an affinity for trying to {{stump}} us on these geocaches!!! Was another good hide, and these out of the way parks are really interesting.
Looked through the logbook and saw the mushroom hunters entries.....hehehe.....maybe you could let them know where all of your caches are and they could just keep an eye on them for you.

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Ace High  ( Difficulty: 2    Terrain: 2.5 )

Seventh and final geocache I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. Hit this one around 8:30 pm. WOW, yet another out-of-the way park that neither of us knew existed. We were very close, and the GPS showed only half a mile to go, when we came to a screaching halt. Looked out over the Cedar River and the remains of the bridge supports for what must have been a long gone road bridge. So once again we had to backtrack and leap frog on back roads to get over to the park. Poor Navcb's blazer sure got a workout today!
Tried the trail from the tent camping area, but the trail soon became lost to us, and we decided to trailblaze in the last tenth of a mile. It was getting late and we didn't want to take the batteries out of the GPS to power up Navcb's mini-mag. Scared up some wild turkeys while we beat feet towards the cache. Even this late it was still very HOT and HUMID, and the mosquito air force was VERY HOSTILE!!!! They laughed at our feeble bug repellent defenses and zeroed in for several hits.

Took nothing, but left my last package of x-treme breathmints for the next brave soul to attempt this well defended cache! <<<<I've since then been informed not to leave mints in caches, and no longer do so. thanks Welch for the advise. edit 1/11/2004>>>>

As a side note, instead of trying to find a trail back, we just tumbled down the hill and somehow made it across the stream without getting our feet wet, and yes there was a good amount of water in it too.

Would have attempted more, but our wives missed us. And besides, we didn't have fresh batteries for our flashlights

I found it! 27 Jul 2003    Double Diamond  ( Difficulty: 1    Terrain: 2.5 )

Sixth of 7 caches I found today with Navcb in the greater Vinton area. Hit this one about 7:30 pm. Our GPS kept trying to tell us to go about 40 feet across the fence, but we stuck to the fenceline and eventually found it.
The hardest part about this cache was finding where in the heck the park was! Benton City must be a great place to live, because its not on any of the maps we had and we had to keep leap frogging roads till we found the access road. I guess the residents are keeping it a well guarded secret.

Took the one dollar bill and left yet another package of x-treme breathmints for the next intrepid geocacher to find this neat, out-of-the-way recreation area. <<<<I no longer hide mints in caches, thanks to Welch for the tip.>>>>

Great hide!!!
