Cold but fun day. Really suprised to see so many people at the Winterfest with it being so cold. Enjoyed meeting some of the new cachers and of course seeing old friends again. But sorry a few of the regulars "wimped" out, but I won't mention any names Dave, Linda, Terry. Lot's of fun reminiscing about past finds. Thanks to the people behind this for putting it on.

What a beautiful day for caching in January 62 degrees, whoíd have thunk it? Good coords took me straight to the cache for a real quick and easy find. Nice hiding spot. Two fisherman on the creek and 2 more in the parking spot ready to head for the creek. Thanks for the nice cache and a reason to be out enjoying this beautiful day.

Had to go to Bath, which is half way to Corning for me, so why not go the rest of the way and finish out the year caching since there were 4 or 5 caches in the immediate area that I just hadnít gotten around to finding. Was able to park right next to this one and of course with Rockyís always excellent coordinates knew right where to look. Very few people on the street today so had no trouble finding and re-hiding it. Thanks Rocky for another cache.

Daughter Melissa (Miniharv) drove up from Virginia on the 26th with her new GPS to do some caching with dad. She got here in the early afternoon so thought we would have some time to find this one before dark. Knew it was going to be hard and thought 2 looking would be better than one. Well we spent more than an hour looking without any luck before we had to leave, as it was getting dark. The next day, the 27th we went north and found 8 caches together, a pretty good day. She then had to leave. Today I went back determined to find it even if it took all day, which I knew it might. I had all the hints and clues, just a matter of putting them all together. I had good sats. , the same as 2 days ago and the GPS took me straight back to the same spot. After about Ĺ hour I finally found it this time, right where I had looked at least 6 times before!!! The coords seem to be excellent for this difficult location. The GPS showing around 10 feet while at the cache, the same for both days. This cache is definitely well hid. After signing the log I re-hid it exactly as I found it. I think it will survive the winter just fine. On the way out I went and checked out the view of the gorge, which is just incredible. Thanks Killerb for a real tough hide and challenge.

Daughter Melissa (Miniharv) drove up from Virginia with her new GPS to go caching with dad. This was the 1st one of the day. Nice hike with no wet grass or even snow. We both spotted it at the same time from about 100 feet. Easy find without the foliage on. A deer hunter had found it during hunting season and signed the log since the last Geocacher had found it back in September. Signed the log, TN/LN and enjoyed the view before leaving. Daughter Melissa (Miniharv) drove up from Virginia with her new GPS to go caching with dad. This is the 2nd GPS-O cache I have done. I did the GPS-O cache at Letchworth on the 24th of Dec. This one was just as enjoyable. Together we found 14 of the 24 controls in a little less than 2 hours. Most of the coords were quite good. Because of the nature of what your looking for and them not being hid under sticks or leaves or in a hollow stump or tree, they are quite easy to find. We never spent more than a minute looking for a single control and most often spotted them from quite a distance. The controls we found were 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, and 20. A rainy Xmas eve day, Donna had to work, what better way to spend it but caching. I really had the park all to myself. Raining on Xmas Eve, who goes to a park on that day?
It was raining quite hard and I really just drove to Letchworth to see which part of the park the waypoints were in and maybe just find a couple to see what they were like. Fortunately I found the Portageville gate open; itís normally closed in the winter. And the 1st point was just a ways inside the gate and really not that far from the road, found it rather quickly. Actually I never spent more than 2 or 3 minutes looking for any of the control points. Like Cracker7M I found most of the coords to be off between 50 and 125 feet. One was 10; another 13 and another 20 but those were the best. I kept track of the actual coords of where I found each control and was going to list them with the control points I found but since your not looking for something that is hidden under sticks and leaves or in a hollow tree or stump but very easily seen when just in the general area, they really arenít needed. With the given coords getting you close and then the control clue, it didnít take me long to spot any of them. After finding the 1st one I just kept going and eventually the rain turned to snow, so I was soaked only a little. I bushwhacked to most of them either singularly or in groups of 2 or 3 going from the 1st to the 2nd etc. I was having so much fun and just kept going and ended up with 16 found before having to leave. I must have seen over 200 deer, they were everywhere and found the remains of an 8-point buck. I really had fun doing this one and truly enjoyed tramping around the park in areas that I hadnít been to before. Thanks for the nice cache.
The controls I found were 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, and 39.

Looked for part 3 coordinates at part 2 with my daughter on 29 Nov for over an hour without any luck. Came back today and found them in about 2 minutes. Canít believe I missed them the 1st time. Part 3 was dead on and found it right away. But the cache had me going for a while. Good thing the coordinates were dead on. I agree with Junglehair and Brogan, this one is going to be tough real soon. Really liked part 2 and 3 though. Thanks for the challenging hide.

Thought that I would take a break from deer hunting and see if I would have any better luck finding a cache or two since I wasnít havenít any luck getting a deer. What a great to day be out caching. Nice and cool and sunny. Loved the walk down the old RR bed, such an interesting area. Scared up some ducks from one of the beaver ponds. When the GPS said I was there looked around and I was almost standing on it. Signed log, took small vise grips, left batteries and a padlock. Thanks Cracker for the nice hide.

Since I wasnít having any luck deer hunting thought I would see if I could find a couple of caches. Such a fabulous day to be out in the woods caching and Cracker you sure picked a great place to hide one. Bushwhacked straight to the cache and then followed the trail back. Loved the views from the trail. Oh, I also spooked a deer on the way back. The cache coordinates were dead on but it still took me 20 minutes to find it, very well hide for sure. TN/LN but this is a well stocked cache with some good stuff. Thanks Cracker for a reason to be in this wonderful place.

Got Donna out caching today so she could get 100 finds this year before it gets cold; this was #98 for her. It was raining a little, but at least it was warm and not snowing. Was familiar with the area so thought I knew the best place from which to start. It was a nice level walk through the woods on an old logging road about Ĺ way to the cache and then some easy bushwhacking the rest of the way. She walked straight to it with the excellent coordinates provided. Took the small diagonal cutters and left some AA Energizer batteries. Took picture # 16 of ourselves on the cache camera. Another great caching event. Thanks Gamma Kit, Coyote, Roadkill, Brogan and anyone else I missed for putting on such a fine event. The food was great, only wish I had taken the time to sample some of the other delicacies I saw on the table. Nice seeing old friends and meeting some new ones. Wish I had been able to see more, just not enough time to try and cache and visit. Maybe next year Iíll leave out the caching and spend more time socializing. Also enjoyed the visit around the campfire in the camping area later in the evening. Hopefully Donna will be able to make it next year.

This was a fun cache to do with some very interesting history. No trouble finding 1st part but I spent about 15 minutes looking for the cache coordinates at part 2. Like Rocky said your description of the location also got me closer than the GPS. And then again like Rocky I didnít read your starting out suggestion and made the last 50 yards harder than it should have been. You would think by now I would know that the hider gave directions for a reason. But then had no trouble finding the cache. Nice hike in the woods on this brisk fall day WITHOUT ANY BUGS! Did this one as my 300th cache in honor of the hider Rocky, the guy that got me into this hobby. Another nice cache in a very fascinating place. No trouble finding it with the good coordinates provided. Signed log, TN/LN. Then went to find the reference marks and climb the tower and enjoyed the fantastic view. Found both the Reference Marks with the corrected spelling. Also found the Station Mark that was replaced in 1964 as SPROUL 2. This time they got the spelling right the 1st time. Rocky only mentioned the Reference Marks but the Station Mark, PID NB1908, is at N 42 23.230 W 77 0.161, which is about 7 paces NNW of the NW corner leg of the fire tower and flush with the ground in contrast to the Reference Marks which stick up a few inches. Interestingly when standing on the Station Mark my GPS was off by only one digit. It read 42 23.231 instead of 42 23.230, thatís 6 feet, and had an elevation of 2099 feet instead of 2096 feet which is the bench marks actual elevation. But then again I was holding it 3 feet above it???? Make sure you climb the tower for the view. Itís more than worth it. By the way the tower is 65 feet high but you can only get to the last stair landing which is at 57 feet.

As I was leaving the parking area I saw this couple with 2 small boys, one of the boys holding a GPS heading towards the cache. I stopped and introduced myself and chatted for a few minutes. It was Two Pairs Of Shoes. Itís always nice meeting fellow cachers on the trail/parking lot or wherever.

Junglehair, you just wait till I see you at Letchworth! The hint for this one really sent me on a wild goose chase. The creeks are not froze this time of year. You canít get there from here! At least not any way I could find. I spent 2 ľ hours finding this one, two hours 10 minutes trying to get there and 5 minutes finding the cache. Finally from what Rocky said I saw the light. I guess I just made it hard for myself. Remind me (you probably wonít have to) to tell you about it at Letchworth. Anyway it was still a nice hide, thanks for the challenge.

After finding Drumlin View this one was another real nice find. Really enjoyed the location, open fields, woods, and great views. Iím really envious of Paul and Erica and wish I owned a place like this. As it was getting later in the day, the mosquitoes were getting real bad in the woods so we hurriedly signed the log and TN/LN. The cache camera was full so I took it with us to leave with Paul and Erica and take the opportunity to thank then for the caches on their property.

This was the 5th Sampson State Park cache for us today. Drove to the gate then a nice short bike ride along the lake to the cache. We found the cache, no problem. Signed the log and Donna took the recipes and folding scissors and left a sunglasses holder. Then we went down to the lake and walked along the shore and found 3 holey rocks. Thanks for another interesting cache.

4th Sampson State Park cache today. We took your advice and followed the rim, which made for a nice easy hike to the cache. Remember being here by the old incinerator last year looking for the 1st part of the old Billy Bones Cache. No trouble finding this one. While Harv signed the log Donna played with the funny noise making thingy but decided to leave it for some other (younger) kid. Thanks for the hide.

3rd of 6 finds in Sampson state Park. This was the only one that we had any trouble with. Each of our GPSís had the cache about 75 feet away. Spent about 10 minutes looking in the wrong area. If I had paid more attention to the clue I would have known. Anyway backed up to re-group and just happened to spot the cache. Should have seen it when we walked by it the 1st time. See Junglehair was in the park doing caches at the same time as us. I remember seeing she had been to a cache just before us. Wish we had ran into her, guess weíll have to wait till the picnic to see hear again. Signed log, TN/LN. Thanks for the challenge in a nice area.

This was the 2nd of 6 finds in Sampson State Park. We drove as close to the cache as you can get and then did the rest on the bikes. Really enjoyed the tour through the old buildings. Canít believe there is an easy way to this cache, well, maybe not easy, it still was hard, but at least it was easier than the way I went in!!! This is definitely 4 star terrain. This was a real good place to hide a cache for those that want a little bit of a challenge. The view of the gorge was breathtaking. Glad the coordinates were so good since there are so many places to hide a cache in all the flotsam from the river when it floods up this high in the spring. Saw a buck in velvet grazing in the swamp below the cache. And found a Dept. of the Army Corps of Engineers survey marker about 200 feet from the cache. Signed log, took/left nothing. Since I couldnít beat Country Boy Gary to be 1st, I figured I might as well wait till a nice day when it wasnít raining and not get wet like he did. And this was a beautiful day for this nice walk in the woods. Scoped it out and think I found the best way in, only .33 miles from the car. This was a real interesting place to hide the cache. I only went in and out of the gully 1 time needlessly before finding the location of the posted coordinates. I could see Sat. reception wasnít going to be good so I attached the external antenna to the GPS and it really made a difference. Real good coords. Rocky. At the cache GPS got down to 7 feet with an EPA of 9 feet. Spent about 5 minutes looking before finding the cache, well hid. You can see a bit of thought went into this one to make it a challenge due to the cache location both at the cache site and in the manner of the best way to get there. Cracker 7M does have you patterned Rocky, Creeks, Gullies and Slopes. Signed log, took/left nothing and headed back into and out of the gully to get to the nice level walk back to the car. I found it! 15 Jun 2003    A MAGICAL, MYSTICAL GULLY  ( Difficulty: 3.5    Terrain: 4 )

After having talked with Country Boy Gary who had found this cache last weekend I was really looking forward to it. And the Gully didnít disappoint me. The trip to this cache and beyond is really Magical. It is about .39 mile to the cache. I think I passed 3 real nice falls from the road to the cache. It took me about 15 minutes to find the cache. I was fortunate and had 4 to 5 satellites directly overhead all day so keeping sats. was no problem. The posted coordinates had me up the bank about 35 feet. At the cache I had 42 37.905-6-7 77 21.740-41-42 with 5 sats. and a EPA of about 26 feet. Signed log, took can holder left Magellen key chain and tape measure key chain. Then I continued on up the gully another 1.6 miles and that is where it is really breathtaking. And I mean that both literally and figuratively! Gary mentioned going about another .5 mile and being at what he thought was the top. Actually it does look that way and you can get out of the gully on the blue trail. But then the gully gets deeper again. It was at this point that I started marking falls as waypoints. I wish I had started doing that at the beginning. Then I would know exactly how many there are. About .6 mile above the cache there is a striking approximately 30-foot falls. But at .75 mile above the cache there is the real remarkable 75-foot falls. And then another 20 footer past that. And the sheer shale walls are straight up at numerous points along the way. The only problem is after you pass the cache, it is a real problem getting past the falls. The banks are so steep; it is really quite difficult to climb them. I took some really stupid chances that I shouldnít have. So a word to the wise, know your limits and donít try and push them. I did, and shouldnít have. I went a total of 1.96 miles (straight line) from the car to where the gully just became a creek in the woods and turned around and came down the orange trail on the south side of the gully. It was over 900 feet change in elevation from the car to where I turned around and almost 7 miles of walking according to the GPS. It took about 5 hours. I took 17 pictures along the way. And as I write this 2 days later, I am still soar and lame. But Rocky, it really is a magical gully, thanks for getting me there.

Another great caching event! I had a great time, Donna doesnít know what she missed, but Iíll be sure and tell her. A special thanks to all the organizers for planning and doing this affair. Nice to see and visit with fellow cachers met at past events. And especially nice to meet and put faces to other names seen in cache logs. Loved re-hashing past cache experiences with everyone. Hope to see everyone at the August event and Letchworth if not on the trail.

Cache Find Post: I hung back on this one. I didnít want to go look for a cache with bogus coordinates. So when the organizers said which were the correct ones, off I went. Got to the spot, tugged on a couple of real rocks, when a group who had gone to the bogus coordinates returned. Together we looked for a couple of minutes when Mrs. Blackpete kicked the one rock I hadnít tugged on and it moved. Weíll all talk about this one for a while. Thanks for creative hide.

After finding Lookout Rock Cache I came to this one. What an interesting place for a hide. Fun to imagine what all may have taken place at this location over all the past years. Found the cache without any problem. I dumped out a little water but the logbook was dry cause of the baggy. Future cachers might want to make sure the cover is on tight and set it level when re-hiding it. Signed log, took/left nothing. Then I looked around and found the 3 benchmarks. Thanks Rippie for the hide in a very interesting location. The walk down was harder on my knees and legs than the walk up. The elevation change was almost 700 feet from street level to the cache.

Canít believe I went out in the rain to be the 1st to find this cache, only to be beaten by my buddy Country Boy Gary. Saw this new cache posted this morning, but since it was raining figured I had all day to wait for it to stop, never figuring Gary would do it in the rain Ė wrong!!! Well the rain didnít stop so finally went out late this afternoon. I had the park all to myself except for the geese. Lovely little park. The view was great except for the overcast. Novel way to hide the micro. GPS said 0 feet at both parts. But what else would you expect from a guy with 27 GPSís. Had a little trouble signing the log trying to keep it from getting wet. After a whole weekend of ďhoneydoís I had to try and get in at least one cache. This one fit the bill. Never been to this park before. Found the monument and came up with the cache coords. but at the cache location there was a fisherman and his son. Had to stand around and look at the ducks waiting for them to leave.
Those ducks must be used to cachers since they didnít seem very disturbed by us poking around in their back yard. After logging in took a few minutes to enjoy the view and watch the sun start to set. Thanks Rocky for the enjoyable hide.

I found it! 22 May 2003    Dishmill Creek Micro  ( Difficulty: 2.5    Terrain: 2.5 )

Decided to do this one after work. Had been a hard day so took the trail instead of bushwhacking. Itís .27-mile straight line bushwhacking (but lotís steeper) from the trailhead and .46 mile going by the trail. Nice peaceful walk in the woods, not a soul around. Got to the cache area and spent about 10 minutes finding it, very well hid. At first the GPS had me about 30 feet away but when I was signing the log it settled down to about 10 feet. When I got back to the trailhead I continued on and followed your suggestion to check out the object at 42 36.059, 78 00.047.
Very interesting. This is the 2nd one of these I have seen in the park. The other one was when doing Gibsonville Doublet by Road Kill. Thanks for the hide.

Rocky, you almost had us stumped on this one. I knew your coordinates would be good (they were) and we looked for over Ĺ hour and were about ready to give up when Donna said check there. I already had once but did again just to please her. Guess I hadnít checked good enough the 1st time cause there it was! Loved the falls. There was the biggest snapping turtle I had ever seen out in the water in the middle of the falls on a rock just letting the water rush over him. Hope the picture turns out, Iíll post it. He must have been at least 16 inches in diameter and I would say his tail was at least 10 inches long. Thanks Rocky for the hide in a very scenic place.

4 May 03, Found 1st part at 11 AM, couldnít find 2nd part, 3rd part at 12:21 PM, 4th part at 12:45 PM and 5th part at 1:20 PM
Same as Country Boy Gary, we found parts 1,3,4 and 5 without any problem but we looked for about 45 minutes for part 2 without any luck. Sats. were all over in that dip but the cords. kept bringing us back to the same point Ė but no cache that we could find. We enjoyed all the interesting parts to this cache. Except Donna wasnít to thrilled to see a big black snake sunning it self in the roots of the tree that hangs on the edge of the cliff at The View. She was jumpy all the rest of the trip. As we approached the Horseshoe Pond Cache a deer crashed across the pond making spectacular splashes with every bound. This was a well thought out cache. Thanks for the hide.

After doing Dishmill Creek Micro cache and being so close, I had to come back and see if I could find Part 2 again. As the last time the sats. were all over the place. They would bring me to the cache cords. then jump a 100 feet. Looked for about Ĺ hour before I finally found it. It is hid well!!! If you just moved it away from the slope then I must have been in the right spot the first time and just couldnít find it since where I found it is straight from the slope directly in-line with where we were looking the first time. When I first found the cache the GPS said 13 feet with 31-foot accuracy. Then while I was logging in it would jump a 100 feet to another spot. This one is a real challenge with the poor sat. coverage and the location of the hiding spot. But now I feel better having found all 5 parts.

Was in Rome for the day and found this one on my way home to Dansville, NY. Was going to do it last year but decided I wanted to do it before the foliage was out and the mosquitoes got bad. What a relaxing walk in a nice Oak wood on a beautiful warm spring afternoon. Found the right trail and went right to it with the given cords. no problem at all. I wouldnít recommend bushwhacking this time of year, itís a little swampy in places. Signed log but didnít have my trading stuff so took/left nothing. Thanks for the nice hide.

She picked up on how to use the GPS real quick and found this one without much problem. Took picture #26 of ourselves with cache camera, signed log and took/left nothing. Then we took off to explore the rest of the place a bit. As luck would have it we found Bill at the main building in back. He was just starting a fire and invited us in for a chat and showed us around. Very fascinating place he has here. Thanks Brogan for a neat caching experience.

My daughter Missy was here for a week from Virginia and it ended up being the coldest and windiest day of the week to take her on her 1st caching experience. She dressed up real warm and off we went. She picked up on how to use the GPS real quick. This is a great place and the woods were beautiful with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. We got to the area of the cache and Missy looked right at it but because of the snow didnít find it. We wandered around for a while but GPS kept saying it was where we looked the 1st time. I finally dug in the snow a bit and found it. Later in the winter when the snow gets deeper this one is going to be tough. Just trust your GPS cause the cords. are right on. Signed log, took/left nothing. Took picture #12 of ourselves with cache camera. On the way out we saw a flock of turkeys out ahead of us. Missy had new boots on and by now had blisters of both heels and it was almost dark but told her there was one more just across the road and since we were so closeÖÖÖ.. So to please good old dad she got tough and said ok, so on to Beaver Meadow #2.

To please the old man she said she thought she could handle the pain so off she limped. On the way in we spooked a flock of turkeys out of the trees that had already gone to roost. Again the cords. were right on and Missy dug around till she found it, I hadnít let her read the hint. DxChallenged was right, great cache contents. Signed log, took/left nothing and took picture #27 with cache camera (1st picture and we were the 4th finders?????). Really loved this place, the trails woods and all, so beautiful with the snow. When we got home out came the band-aids cause Missy had a big broken blister on each heel. But she said she really enjoyed it.

If your going to be 1st to find a cache this was the one. Our picture is 1st in the cache camera, our entry is 1st in the log and the best part is the gift from Brogan of the beautiful Letchworth Gathering inscribed walking stick for the 1st finder. All at the picnic saw it so you know what I mean. Arrived at the picnic at about 7:30 AM. Pavilion was open but no one was there. Shortly Brogan showed up, he was caching with his girls, and then a few others started trickling in. The printouts for this special cache were on the table but no one was picking them up or heading for the cache. Just about then my Aunt Lois arrived and said lets go find it. So off we went. A little tricky at the beginning if you donít want to do some steep climbing but we figured it out. Got to the cache area no problem but then it took me over 45 minutes of looking before finding it. Looked at the right spot many times but said no, it canít be there but it was. Logged in took our picture with the cache camera but in our hast to find it I had left the goodie bag in the truck. And this cache was loaded to the brim! Thanks Brogan for a great challenging hide and the fantastic gift for being 1st. This will be one of my most memorable finds.

Teamed up with my cousin Deanne and her mother, my Aunt Lois. Deanne had to leave before noon but wanted to get some more training in on how to use her GPS. And this was a great cache for doing just that. It had everything. Great views, you had to do a little math and waypoint entry for the 2nd part, and a good hiding spot. Together we found the cache logged in and got it re-hid just before another group came along. So we didnít spoil their fun. We then headed back to the gathering to enjoy the rest of this great event. When I arrived no on was around. The doors were open and a radio was on the table to call. Brogan had been there but was out caching with his girls and said they would be back in a few minutes. After that cachers just kept coming and coming (Donna even got there eventually) to what turned out to be a fantastic gathering of cachers. First let me thank the organizers Gamma Kit, Coyote, Road Kill, Quinn, Dekaner and J-Ra and any others I donít know about for all their work in setting up and running this special event. And a special thanks to Brogan for making the walking stick that I won for being 1st to the Letchworth Fall Gathering Cache. I so enjoyed meeting all those cachers that before this had only been an entry in some cache log I had found. My only regret is having missed many that I wanted to meet. There just wasnít enough time with so many there. It was an extraordinary event and Iím looking forward to the next one.

Lots of winding trail choices to this one. But when I got close I found the ďcachers pathĒ to this many times found cache and had no trouble finding cache. Saw deer going in and then there was a doe and 2 fawns in the nature park at the trailhead coming out. Signed log, took/left nothing. But I think I logged 7 Aug so will the next finder change my log date to 7 Sep.

Been waiting a while to do this one and it didnít disappoint me. I think itís a classic. This one took me at least 30 minutes to find. GPS brought me to the spot and I looked and looked. Finally expanded search area and found it. Coordinates seem to be off 30 or 40 feet, but since no one else has complained maybe it was I. You get that ďfeel good about yourself feelingĒ when you find one like this. Took pics 20 and 19 with cache camera. Flash didnít work 1st time so thatís why I took a 2nd. Didnít work then either. The other camera is full. Signed log, took/left nothing. But I think I logged 7 Aug so will the next finder change my log date to 7 Sep.

This one was a lot of fun and you can see a lot of effort went into making it. Took me 55 minutes from finding 1st part to finding cache. I really liked finding the clue at stop 3. As I was logging in at the cache a doe and 2 fawns walked up to within about 20 feet of me. But I think I logged 7 Aug so will the next finder change my log date to 7 Sep. Took/left nothing. Took picture #17 with cache camera. Thanks for a very enjoyable find.

I ran into ScrawnyJay as he was coming out after having just found the cache. We had a nice chat. Heís the 6th cacher now that I have run into on the trail. This was a nice walk along the creek. Glad this was the last one of the day. I donít think I could have done anymore after this one. I took a little longer but not as steep a trail to this one, but it was still pretty steep at the end. And then came down the real steep trail coming out. Sats. were bouncing around the last 100 feet but I had shot a bearing and knew the approximate area. So it only took me a few minutes to find the cache. You sure know how to hide them Hinge. Signed log, took/left nothing and headed home after a real enjoyable day of caching.

Okay, so we were the 3rd to find this one behind Road Kill and Balloonpilot, Chicken Lips & WW Gobstopper. But I think there was some ďinsider tradingĒ going on about when this one was going to be hid and posted. Found the cache at 10:00 AM. As a kid I had my 1st train ride on the Phoebe Snow along this railroad bed. Donna had her hand right on one of the clues before she spotted it. And then she also spotted the cache before me. 2nd of BP & CL cache finds today. Got to the suggested parking spot, or so I thought. Talked with WW Gobstopper today, and apparently it wasn't. Anyway where I was, was full of campers. Thought it would look stupid if I started down the trail with boots on and I knew they would be hot on my feet, so I decided to carry them with me. That probably looked just as stupid! But when I got to the cache I didnít feel stupid since I had them with me. Could see the Gnome peering out at me but I changed into my boots and went in anyway. It was just starting to get light as I started down the trail. What a quiet walk. New coords. brought me right to it. GPS said 3 feet at the cache. As I sat on a big rock at waters edge filling out the log, a slight fog was rising from the lake, it was about 50 degrees, the sun was just starting to hit the hilltop on the opposite side of the lake and a flock of geese flew overhead. So peaceful and serene. But alas I had to leave and go to work. Thanks Rocky for the hide and the fun I had with Country Boy Gary over this one. Also congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Measure for being the first to find the cache the day before with the wrong coords. being posted.

Donna spotted this one first. Kids playing on the hill nearby made it tough to retrieve the cache and re-hide it without them seeing what we were doing. But I think we did it. 1st of 6 finds today Found at 10:40 AM
This was our 100th find and of course Rocky it had to be one of your caches. As you know, my 1st find was also one of yours. I thought you started a nice tradition with your 100th find of a cache hidden by a person that helped you in this game. So I thought I would continue it. Youíre the one that introduced me to caching, helped me decide on which GPS to buy, answered all my questions and of course hid some terrific caches.
Donna had the day off so I skipped work so we could do it together. And what a great day for caching it was. Loved the drive up to the fire tower site, just the kind of woods I know you like, myself also. And this cache being a 2 parter was even more interesting. Had no trouble finding it and even found the 2nd marker. After this cache we spent the rest of the day finding 5 more in the area. Each one was very enjoyable and in an area that was just incredible. The highlight of the day (besides finding our 100th cache) being when we saw a sow black bear with triplet, yes 3 cubs walking down the road in front of us. A rare site to be sure.
Thanks Rocky for introducing me to this hobby and for today by getting me to an area that was just grand.

Saw this new hide by Rocky posted late Friday night. Got up early so I could be the 1st and beat the Rochester guys and gals. Good thing too, cause I ran into HFJohn later at another cache, and he was headed this way next. I wanted to be 1st to one of yours Rocky, the guy that got me into this wonderful hobby/sport/game. I grew up as a kid just across the lake from the park. I can remember it before it was a state park, the Hall farm. Over a mile of unspoiled beach on this beautiful lake. Some of the best parts of my life were on this lake. Did a lot of fishing right in front of your cache. Water skiing, partying on the beach, all some of my fondest memories. Sat on a rock on the beach for a while taking it all in as I composed this. Signed the log, took nothing and left a mosquito head net. For others that follow, you might want to visit Esperanza. Itís a big beautiful old house with a lot of history thatís being restored. Itís really quite something if youíre into that sort of thing. The last I was there 2 years ago a lot had been done. So by now it should be quite a ways along. You can see it if you stand on the beach looking at the lake, itís to your right up on the hill just off of Rt. 54A. Thanks Rocky for the hide and getting me to a place that is special to me.

This was the hardest of the 4 I done in the park, only because of the hike in the hot sun. Drove to one spot at the locked gate, GPS said .84 miles. Drove to another spot that was closer. Followed paved path but the closest that got me was .3 mile of bushwhacking left to get to the cache. Decided the .84 mile on paved path was better so backtracked to car and drove back to locked gate. After a hot hike, I found the cache without any problem. Glad it was where it was supposed to be. Signed log, took/left nothing. Just after I left the woods into the open area of the shooting range and started back to the paved path along the lake, a N.Y. State Trooper drove up to me and wanted to know what I was doing. He has a key to the gate! I explained caching, showed him the cache printout, the GPS etc. He was real interested and wrote everything down. It seems the troopers use the shooting range for practice and someone had recently vandalized the place and he was doing a check on it. He seemed satisfied with my story. I asked for a ride back to the locked gate and he said ďsureĒ, NICE TROOPER. He saved me a .84 mile hot hike back to the car. Is that cheating? Thanks Blackpete for the interesting adventure.

Ė only .23 mile to cache Ė found trail head Ė came to fork in trail Ė took one Ė cache getting farther away Ė backtracked Ė took the other one Ė cache getting farther away Ė stuck with it 1/3 mile hoping trail would turn toward cache until cache was straight behind me Ė backtracked and took 1st trail again Ė cache getting farther away Ė stuck with it and trail finally started coming around and getting closer to cache. Took awhile to find 1st part. Think cords. might be off 30 or 40 feet. But just kept expanding the search area and found it anyway. Should have looked there earlier. Think I jammed my head on the same jagged branch as Hinge while bending over to look under some rocks. Fortunately I had a hat on so no damage done. Really liked the 2nd part, cords. for this part seemed real good. Signed log, took/left nothing. Watched a woodchuck walk down the steep cliff across from the cache. Thought the first one of the day was going to be a no find. Got to the spot no problem. Had good sats. with WAAS. But I still spent over Ĺ hour looking before I finally found it. Lots of fallen trees, thorn bushes and heavy undergrowth hid it well, especially being painted camo. At the cache the GPS said 20 feet, but in all that undergrowth thatís a bunch. Nice woods, easy find, GPS said 3 feet at cache. Came in from South Clinton Rd. I was getting tired and that looked the closest. Bet they were wondering whatís this nut doing sitting in the middle of the woods writing in a book. Hope they didnít come back after I left to see what was there.

Started raining as I left Samís Surprise cache. It was still raining when I arrived at the parking spot, so had to wait a while before I could do this last one of the day. This was a real nice walk in the woods. GPS took me right to it. Real nice hiding spot. A lot of trails back there. Good thing GPS leaves a breadcrumb trail. Took picture #14 with cache camera. So now Gimpy even though Samís Surprise cache camera was full, you still got my picture HA HA. Signed log, took/left nothing. Thanks Gimpy for another nice hide.

4th of 10 finds today. Found at 12:25 PM
Thought this one was going to be easy. Found the closest parking spot and GPS said not to far. But when I went up the trail the sats. started bouncing and had me going all over the place. I must have looked like a chicken with my head cut off. Finally let the GPS settle down and found the cache. At the cache it said only 4 feet. Took picture # 19 with cache camera. Took Ricks giant pumpkin seeds and left a mosquito head net. Canít wait till next year to see if they grow into some giant pumpkins. I planted 33 hills this year and only 1 plant came up. Must have done something wrong. Iíll follow his included instructions to the letter next year. Thanks for the challenging hide.

Came in the shortest way, up and over then down the hill. It was way to hot and muggy for any long hiking for me today. GPS got me close when I spotted it. But GPS never said any closer than 35 feet, even while logging in at the cache. Took picture # 25 with cache camera. Since my feet were damp with sweat, I took the new pair of socks and left a mosquito head net. Thanks for the hide.

After driving around the block I finally found the parking spot and trail head. This was a real nice spot for a hide. Saw the angle from the trail on the way in. I used the zoom lens to take its picture, since it looked like it was on private property. Your coordinates got me there, but it took me 10 minutes of looking to find it. Kept missing it because it was covered in rain-spattered mud, which hide it very well. Signed log, took/left nothing. Thanks for the interesting hide.

Hadn't been to Akron in over 25 years. Used to visit some people that lived here.
Nice little park full of people having fun. We were the 2nd to find the cache today. Missed Team Headrush by about 2 hours. Got lucky and spotted the cache from the trail. Neat hidding spot.Signed log, took/left nothing. Very little water in the creek, so we didn't bother to go look at the falls. A local couple we met coming from that direction said we didn't miss much. But that it is real nice when there is water. Thanks for the hide in this nice little park.

Actually this was kind of the 4th one. Because after leaving the Beware of the Troll cache and heading for this one, Donna realized it was only 20 minutes to the Galleria Mall. So we made a detour for a little caching there. Then we finally got to here. Park was full of campers having fun. Donna found cache quickly. Coordinats were dead on. Signed log, took/left nothing. Then found a shady picnic table for a nice quiet little picnic. Thanks for the enjoyable time in the park.

We were able to drive to within .2 mile of cache, enjoying the beautiful woods all the way. No trouble finding the first part. And then I impressed (wink) Donna with my compass and navigating skills to get us close to the cache. Donna spotted a likely place but didn't see the cache. Again I impressed her (wink) with my keen eyesite when I found it where she had just looked. Took our picture #20 with cache camara. Logged in and Donna traded a whistle with a compass and thermometer on it for the train whistle. Thanks for the interesting twist to a nice hide.

5th of 6 finds today. Found at 4:15 PM. Came here from Erwin Beaver Pond Cache. Never did find any trail in off the main trail from the Beaver Pond if there is one. But I did find a lot of mud. Cache is hidden real well, but I found it after a few minutes. While logging in, GPS was bouncing between 3 and 30 feet. Took the roll of film as my camara was on it's last picture and left a mosquito head net. Also took a squirt of bug spray. Thanks for the hide. Getting tired, but one more to do and I'll have all 6 of the Erwin's done today. Onto Coopers Overlook Cache.

6th of 6 hard finds today. Started to my first one at 9:15 this morning and found this one at 5:25 PM. Got back to car at 6:30 PM.Came here from The Hatfields and McCoys. I was tired, but I wanted to finish all 6 of them. This was a nice trail in a nice woods, but it sure got long coming out/up. Coordinates dead on. Think the reason there are so many accidental finds by hunters is the location. The tree is just a real natural place for hunters to stand while hunting.
Logged in, took/left nothing except a squirt of bug spray. It was a long hike back to the car. I was whipped. Probably be hurting in the morning. Think I did about 12 miles today, at least half of them up hill. I want to thank you for 4 of the 6 Erwin hides. I really enjoyed them all.

A real elevation change on this one, 500 feet from the car to the cache and most of it in the first .3 mile. Had no trouble staying on the trail with this one, lots better than bushwacking. Saw a turkey run up the trail ahead of me while going in. Found cache real quick. GPS said 5 feet while I was logging in. Took/left nothing. Thanks for the 2nd hide in the Erwin Hollow State Forest. Now across the valley to the Erwin Game Management Area.

1st of 6 today. Found at 10:45 AM. This ws probably the hardest although not the longest. Started on the trail and then lost it due to the heavy folage and ended up bushwacking the last half mile through some pretty thick stuff. Took 1 1/2 hours to get there. Came back a differnt, better route and it still took 55 minutes to get back to the car. Took a few minutes to find cache. With all the folage on now, it sure looks different than in the pictures. While at the cache, GPS bounced between 3 and 40 feet. Signed log. Took copy of CD, left $2.00. Will let you know what I think in separate e-mail. Listening to it now as I write this. 2nd of 4 finds today. Did this after Deer Crossing. Was going to come in the short way from Stewart Road. WRONG! After one look at the solid wall of grapevines, thought I'd better follow the suggested starting point. Many choices of paths to take. When I got close, I thought it was going to take a while to find. Vegitation was very thick. But guess I got lucky and spotted it very quickly even though it's well hidden. At cache GPS said 21 feet. But as I logged in it setteled down to 7 feet. Took/left nothing. Thanks for the hide. Now onto Gypsum Mine.

1st of 4 finds today. 9:30 A.M. I felt like I was in a maze when I left the main trail onto a deer path. Vegitation was head high and almost closed off the path. Then it broke out into a nice path in the open woods. Some weed or flower must have been in bloom because the woods smelled just like a perfume store. Sats. were bouncing a bit and got me to 50 feet when I spotted it. But as I logged in, they setteled down to 4 feet. Took/left nothing. Thanks for the hide. Now onto I Heard It On The Grapevine.

I need to read these things closer before I head off onto the trail. Real nice trail to cache. Got close, looked around and finally spotted it after walking around it for a few minutes. Ended up climbing up the other side of the hill to the upper path only to have to go back down it on the cache side to the cache. But your coordinates brought me right to it. This was a fun hike on a hot day. We put on our old sneakers and walked right up the creek. It was lots cooler in the glen. Got close to it before loosing sattellite coverage. Only had 2 above 45 degrees, and down in this glen your not going to see any lower than that. Spent about 15 minutes looking in all the wrong places before finally finding it. Rock does this make up for Huff & Puff. Logged in, took/left nothing, took pic #25 with cache camara and a bunch with our own. We must have seen 20 people walking up and down the creek. We were almost back to the car when we realized we forgot to go see the 2nd falls. A couple we met said the 2nd falls is better than the 1st and that was great. We will go back. 1st of 4 finds today. Had heard so much about this one we had to see for ourselfs. Think we must have went in the hard way. Bushwacked straight from the road. Picked our way across the ponds and dams. Got a little damp and muddy. A deer let us walk right by her less than 20 yards away and never moved. Donna found the cache without any problems. Logged in, took pictures, traded nothing. Couldn't believe the size of some of the trees they had cut down. Went back the same way we came in as it was the shortest and the bugs were starting to get to us. Thanks for the hide. Saw Balloon Pilots truck on our way out. We didn't meet them as we were coming out so they must have went in a different
(easier,drier,better???) way.

My 1st to be the 1st to find a cache. While logging in my Sunday finds on Sunday evening, I saw where you had hide 2 new caches. Both sounded real interesting. Decided to get up early Monday and be a couple hours late for work and see if I couldn't beat Rocky to be the 1st to find it. Half expected to see his car at the trail head when I got there. Really enjoyed the early morning walk in a beautiful woods. GPS got me to general area, but Sats. seemed to be bouncing around due to tree cover. After a few minutes looking in all the likely places (a lot of them), I found it at 8 AM. While filling out the log the GPS setteled down and read 0 ft. to dest. Traded a mosquito head net for the picture album to be used for caching pictures. Will try to get back to explore the rest of the preserve when I have more time and can bring Donna,(somebody has to work). Thanks for the hide and the opertunity to be the first to a cache. Scoped out Grimes Glen on the way home. That looks like it's going to be fun. Will do it soon.

4th and last of 4 finds on this very hot and humid day. Donna was at the LPGA, so I took my Aunt Lois and cousin Deanne with her new Map 76 for their first day of caching. Interesting monument, especially after having been to 1779 Memorial Tree. Also one of the names on the monument was William Harvey, the same name as my Aunt Lois's husband - my Uncle Bill. Now on to the 2nd park. Interesting that I had just attended a birthday party at this park last weekend. There was a graduation party going on today and we couldn't seem to find a good way to start to the cache. Thought we may have coordinates wrong. So back to 1st part to double check - they were right!. Back to park. Finally found a way around the party and no trouble finding cache. Previous finder was right about the mosquitoes. Signed in, took/left nothing. Thanks for the hide and a bit of history.

1st of 4 finds today. Donna was at the LPGA, so I took my Aunt Lois and cousin Deanne with her new Map 76 for their first go at caching. Left at 6:30 AM to try and beat the heat. Both GPS's agreed, taking us right to the cache. Aunt Lois spotted cache first. A little damp, but ok. I think it would help if cachers would replace the cache with the holes in the can down instead of up to catch the rain. Signed in, took/left nothing. Found the trail for the hike (up) backout. Even though we found cache at 8 AM, it was still a hot hike out. Think it must have been to hot for the spooks as we didn't see a soul. Thanks for the hide.

3rd of 4 finds today. Donna was at the LPGA, so I took my Aunt Lois and cousin Deanne with her new MAP 76 for their first day of caching. We left at 6:30 AM to try and beat the heat on this very hot and humid day. But now it's 11 AM. At least the trail was shady and level. While driving to the suggested parking spot, we passed a 1/2 mile long line of horse trailers parked along the road getting ready for a hunt/ride? Had a nice walk to the cache. Coordinates were dead on, no trouble finding. While signing in 3 of the horseriders came down the trail. They had to make a turn into the woods up over the bank by us. They had a little trouble as the horses apparently preferred the level trail. Don't think they even noticed the cache and what we were doing. Saw and passed many more on our way out. Took/left nothing. Thanks for the nice hunt.

6th of 6 finds today. Wanted to do more, but Donna had had enough. A nice ending to a beautiful day. Nice park and trails. No trouble finding cache. Donna found it right away. At cache, GPS said 0.00 feet to go!!! Glad it was such a clear day. You could see the tall buildings in Rochester on the horizon when looking at the view of Honeoye Lake on the road in. Thanks for the hide and a reason to be there.

5th of 6 finds today. Nice walk in the woods. Didn't find climb that bad since it went across the hill instead of straight up. No trouble finding. Cache in good shape. At cache, GPS said 0.00 feet to go!!! As we were loging in a couple of hikers went by on the closer path. Don't think they even noticed what we were doing. Logged in, took nothing - left nothing. 1st of 5 finds today. Finally got a chance to come back to the park after getting rained out back in April on the day we met Road Kill at his Gibsonville Doublet cache. Harv found it without to much trouble while Donna was admiring the falls and the beautiful rainbow the sun was making on the spray from the falls. Took our picture with the cache camara and signed in. Left nothing and took only pictures. Thanks Road Kill for the nice view.

4th of 5 finds today. Nice level walk for a change. Had to go past cache and come back as there was a couple of kids standing on the trail next to the cache. Had excellent sats and coordinates were right on, but your choice of a hiding spot had us thinking we were going to be skunked. Knew we were there cause the sats weren't bouncing around at all. Kept saying only a few feet at worst. Finally got lucky. Nice hide. Signed log book, took nothing, left nothing.

Came in from just the right direction and spotted the log pile and cache right away. Relocated everything just as instructed. Signed the log book, took lots of pictures, left head net and took Cajun Hot Sauce to be used in my jerky marinade. Thanks for a most rewarding end to a fine day.

Back at it after a 2 month lay off. (Had to help my cousin make 345 gallons of Maple Syrup.) Found it without much trouble. Coordinates dead on! Liked the views. It started to rain as we opened the cache. Donna immediately wanted the hat (to keep her hair dry). Told her she had to leave it as it was for picture taking only - which we did. At least it helped keep her hair dry while signing the log. Left nothing - took nothing except enjoyment of the views. Thanks Rocky.

Ran into the man himself, Road Kill and his dog Nick. As we were parking, Road Kill and Nick were coming out the trail after checking on his cache. Enjoyed meeting him. A little trouble locating the cache. Should have trusted the GPS. It said we were there, and we were! Just took a bit of looking in the right place instead of walking all around. Enjoyed the surprise. Thanks Road Kill for the interesting challenge and the in person meeting.

What a nice day for the middle of February! About 40 degrees and no snow on the ground. Interesting trail. Enjoyed the historical markers. Will come back another day to go farther down the trail. Map 76 took us to within 12 feet. Actually a rabbit did. He ran out of the cache hidding spot and Donna spotted the cache. Signed the book,took our picture, took the compass and left a tire gauge. I sure worked for this one. Had to find it as it's only .7 mile great circle from my house. Went with my buddy Gary and his young friend Brian on Saterday 26 Jan. Short walk to the cache the way we went in. Two GPS's said we were there. But after more than 2 hours of looking, we gave up. Gary and Brian went back Sunday and found it. So now I really had to find it. Went back Monday, 28 Jan. after work. Only had 15 or 20 minutes of light left. Tryed the new coordinates Rocky gave me, N42 30.766 W077 41.524. He had gone to check on it Sunday after I told him about our no-find and came up with new coordinates with his new 76 Map. Not that it should have made any difference, since everyone else found it with the posted ones. And we had walked all around it on Sunday. Anyway, took about 10 minutes to find. Was starting to get dark and was just standing taking one last look around before leaving when there it was only 5 feet away. What a spot! Didn't have enough light or time to open, read and sign the log, so went back today, 29 Jan., after work. Signed the log, took the CD-R and left a flag. Trouble is I left the cache and was back at the car when I realized I still had the flag in my back pocket. So back to the cache to leave the flag I went. All in all a nice adventure - but isn't that what it's all about?

Donna's first find! Got her new hiking boots yesterday, so thought she should break them in. What a beautiful sunny day, 55 degrees on the 27th of January - who would have thought? Still some snow on the ground at the cache, but that made for better traction climbing up the hill coming in from the north. Donna complained all the way up. Good thing she found it or she would have killed me for draging her up the hill for nothing! She still might if she finds out there is another less steep way in. Cache is in good shape. Took our pictures and signed the book. Forgot and left the goodies in the car, so took nothing - left nothing

For my 2nd cache find I chose one of yours Gimpy for all the help you provided in getting me started. One of Rocky's had to be 1st. Unfortunately we couldn't find it! Nice cold windy snowy day. Took Donna on her 1st hunt. Nice easy walk in. Found the spot, I think, but not the cache. Spent an hour looking in all the likely places in an ever widening circle, but no luck. Went out and back in a couple of times. GPS always brought me back to the same spot. Will try again.

I found it! 12 Jan 2002    MOTHER OF ROCKY  ( Difficulty: 3    Terrain: 3 )

My first cache find. Rocky, since your the one that turned me onto Geocaching, my first find had to be one of yours. Got the new toy (Map 76) on Friday and stayed up until 2 A.M. learning how to use it. Wanted to get in a find before we had too much snow to be able to find one. Fortunately we haven't had much snow and the last few warm days have settled it down to only a couple of inches. Donna couldn't go so I took my buddy Gary. Had to use 4 wheel drive coming in from the North. Didn't see any deer, but tracks indicated lots of them in the area We didn't have much trouble finding it. Actually Gary spotted it cause I was too busy looking at the GPS. Cache is in good shape. Guess no hunters found it ( see previous entry).
Wasn't planning on taking anything, so hadn't brought anything to leave. But Gary liked the pink golf ball. So took it and left a dollar. The golf ball will go to another cache. Signed the log book, took each others picture (the camera worked fine, even in the cold). Then used the Trac back to get back to the car. I actually
remembered to mark it before we went into the woods. Of course we could have followed out our tracks in. Thanks Rocky for turning me onto caching.
