AN ANCIENT BURIAL PLACE
Excerpts from Ramblings in the Valley of Jacobs Creek. Published in 1932 by A.L. Rowe & O.P. Medsger. "Tread lightly" this is hallowed ground. Tread reverently here: Beneath this sod, in silence, sleeps the brave old Pioneer: Who never Quailed in darkest hour: whose heart never felt fear. "Tread lightly then" And now bestow the tribute of a tear." The burial place of those who died during the period when the Furnace was in operation, especially those who adhered to the Protestant faith, is located about a mile northeast of these old ruins. It is situated near a large tract or woodland where for many years the birds have sung their requiems and carols; the wild pheasant led forth her brood and the rabbit sported with her young; unconscious that the dead lie buried here. Only one of the rude stones that mark the location or the graves has any inscription upon it. This one is dated 1809 and states that "Here lies the body of Daniel Guynn, aged 76 Years." Comparing the dates we learn that he was born when Washington was a babe on his Mother's knee and Daniel Boone was yet to be. The beauty of the location and the peaceful quietude that abounds, located as it is, far from any dwelling, give the place a peculiar charm that is not easily described. Unless one is familiar with the location or has a guide, the place is rather difficult to find. The visitor to the spot as he muses on the past, is apt to ask, "Who sleeps here?" "What of their history, their joys and sorrows, their contributions to humanity?” All is oblivion, the grave answers not. The cache is located near the ancient burial place for the workers of the Alliance Furnace. Team AlphaOmega's cache GCQ1FP - Ramblings in the Valley of Jacobs Creek - takes you on a tour of the industry ruins that once filled this valley. Questmaster's GCE4BD Iron Alliance is also nearby. The road leading in from the Mt. Etna Rd. gamelands parking area is open part of the year to provide hunter access, which lessens the length of the hike and difficulty. Waypoints N 40°07.518 W 079°42.496 - Parking area off of Mt. Etna Rd. N 40°07.027 W 079°42.418 - Cemetery trailhead along the powerline N 40°06.780 W 079°43.088 - Alliance Furnace Note: This cache is located on Pennsylvania State Gamelands. During the peak deer season (November 15 - December 15, except Sundays), you must "wear a minimum of 250 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a 360° arc." |

Open Log: Unrestricted I don't see a way to disable my cache here on navicache. The area has been undergoing heavy deforestation via natural gas wells and gaslines and retaining ponds. 30 foot wide roads with fresh gravel running every which way in this area. Last time I looked I could find no sign of my cache, not even a pile of tossed swag on the ground. I'm going to try to rehide an ammo can for this cache again, but while it's missing, you can still stop by the cemetery on your way to any number of great caches in the area, questmaster and alphaomega have several great ones.

Open Log: Non-commercial use only Found this one but forgot to log it on here. Dang shame hte way the DCNR won't let you drive on state land but will let the gas co.'s destroy it. Nice old cemetery, will probally get "lost" in the shuffle.

Open Log: Personal use only JimBat found it. Brought my mountain bike along for this one as I knew where the parking area was and been on this trail before so I knew I could ride on it. Wrote down the trail head coordinates before I left the house but didnt realize I never down loaded the cache coordinates into the GPS. Since I came this far I decided to go ahead and give it a try the Forest Guardian way. Found the trail head off the power line and followed the trail for a while and came upon the cemetery. Definately in the middle of nowhere. I wonder how people are actually buried here. Used my geo-senses and looked around and found the cache. It was really well hidden and I left it that way. Took 2 TBs and left a geocoin. I think I may have walked right past this one while doing Ramblings in the Valley of Jacobs Creek cache and didnt even realize it as we continued on the circle trail when we done it. I really liked this one. TFTC

Open Log: Unrestricted We decided to spend our last Friday before school starts, caching along Jacobs Creek. After finding Quest Master’s Iron Alliance cache, we headed up to look for this one. There are trails going everywhere. We found one that went in the direction the gps said we needed to go, but it ended about ¼ of a mile away. I found another foot path that lead us the rest of the way. It was kind of spooky at seeing this grave yard here in “the middle of no where”. We tried to make out the writing on one of the stones, and then started looking for the cache. I was looking at the gps watching it count down to zero, and our youngest yelled, “found it”. She thought it was funny that I had walked right over it! Any way, we loved the hike, the hide, and the history. Great job! Thanks!

Open Log: Non-commercial use only I was up early to take my nephew to soccer practice so I figured to grab this new navicache while I was out and about. I had discussed this cache idea with CJ a few weeks ago and I was really looking forward trying it because I only vaguely knew where this place was by her description of it. I'm pretty sure now that it would have taken me forever to find it without the coordinates because this site is very lost in a maze of obscure ATV trails running through them thar crick hills. I knew the parking spot and how to get there but I'm really grateful for that trailhead coordiante because it wouldn't have been easy to find without it and bushwhacking even a short distance through this area that has been recently clearcut would have been miserable. Thus I was able to enjoy a brisk early morning hike the whole way to the cache with not a soul to be seen anywhere. I landed in exactly the right spot to find the cache without much ado and took my time browsing through the treaure. I took the generous FTF prize (thanks!) and left a wrench lighter and a koosh ball. I also traded a geocoin for the Red Jeep TB. I did the quick tour of the cemetery plus a bit of bonus exploring afterwards. There's not much to see with there being only the one headstone that's barely legible but it's definitely something worthwhile to see. I like that somebody must be making an effort to keep the area clear to preserve this history. Thanks for bringing me here, CJ! Johnny.
