A good place to take a break while driving.

This virtual is a large boulder with an aluminum plate attached recognizing the bridge's beauty.

First time I came down the White Bird hill would have been on the old road In July of 1934 riding in a modal A Ford 10 days after I was born. We were heading home from the Hospital in Cottonwood to Cow Creek up from Lucile. Drove the old road myself many times in the 50s and 60s. The new road and bridge makes it much easier but not such a good adventure. First try at this, much fun!

Found this one on the way back from Boise. My dad use to work at the Chevron bulk plant in Grangeville, He would deliver fuel for this project. They needed fuel on the other side of the bridge and there was just one section that still had just the “I” beams exposed. So the workers guided him over the beams to the other side of the bridge. He still talks about being the first one to cross the bridge.

I was curious to know who would award anything to this bridge. When I read the plaque, I understood.

As I recall, it took so long to complete this bridge the paving was breaking up from old age by the time the highway finally opened. And the bridge shifted a few feet so the highway had to be repaved to meet the bridge.

Whitebird Grade has special meaning for me because the first time I drove it in August, 1968 a HOUSE! was being moved up the bloody hill. Now I cruise it in perfect comfort.

Dang it - I forgot to check Navicache for new caches before I went on my trip. I went over this bridge yesterday on my way back from a backpacking trip in Hells Canyon.
