Believe it or not!
The Portsmouth Daily times wrote on June 17, 1999 that “the legend of Bigfoot has been told for centuries, but some local residents have come forward to say it is more than a legend. Some residents claim to have seen Bigfoot, smelled Bigfoot and even been lifted off the ground by Bigfoot!”
The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team says it has investigated eyewitness accounts of reported encounters with Bigfoot like creatures in Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest lands. Shawnee State and Wayne National Forests represent a vast tract of wilderness land that together totals over 280,000 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains that borders the Ohio River. The national forest lands stretch into several counties across Southern Ohio, including Gallia, Lawrence, Scioto and Vinton Counties.
Bigfoot reports have been generated within these localities for a number of years, dating back to an unusual instance in 1869, in which a father and daughter pair encountered a frightening, gorilla-like "wild-man" near Gallipolis, Ohio.
The following is an excerpt from the Bigfoot Research Organization from the general area of Lawrence County Road #22:
Report # 7940 (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Friday, February 06, 2004.
Bother and sister are followed by a brown, hairy creature walking on two legs
COUNTY: Lawrence County
LOCATION DETAILS: County Road 22 (Lawrence Street Road) right near Private Drive 2050.
NEAREST TOWN: Ironton
NEAREST ROAD: County Road 22 (Lawrence Street Road)
OBSERVED: “I was at home when my brother called to say that he had run out gas and needed me to walk the gas can down to his location which was about 3 blocks away. Upon arriving at the location, he was looking in the direction of the creek bed next to his parked car. He claimed he could hear something in the weeds moving around and complained of a nasty smell coming from the area. When I arrived, I immediately noticed the smell he was talking about and at some time, I could hear whatever it was moving around in the weeds. All of a sudden, my brother grabbed my hand (because he saw the creature) and said lets get out of here.
As we proceeded back towards our house, I turned around and I could see six to seven foot tall upright walking animal covered with very thick hair approaching us at a very rapid pace. I noticed its shoulders were extremely wide and when it walked, it made strides that were very non human like in proportion. We ran back to our house and it followed us never catching up to us. When we made it back to our driveway, a car was coming in the other direction. Then, my brother and I turned around to catch another look at the creature as it was running into the weeds on north side of the road. My brother and I decided not to stick around and we quickly made our way up our driveway into the safety of our house.
After this encounter, we came to a logical conclusion that what we were fortunate enough to see something that fit the description of the so-called animal called Bigfoot. There is no way it could have been a bear because bears can't run on two legs. I have no idea what else it could have possibly been.”
OTHER WITNESSES: My brother and I.
TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was 1:30 AM. The weather was hot and dry.
ENVIRONMENT: Hilly forested area with abandoned rail tracks in the vicinity of Little Storms Creek.
Follow-up investigation report:
“The witness estimated that they were 50 feet away from the creature when they initially saw it. It appeared to be a muddy brown in color, six to seven feet tall, and probably weighed over 400 pounds. Even though it followed them, it never seemed to gain on them, almost deliberately. The area is close to Wayne National Forest.”
There have been numerous accounts of Bigfoot Sightings in Southern Ohio on internet sites such as ‘The American Bigfoot Society”, “The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team Website”, and “The Sasquatch Sightings Database”. They say Bigfoot reports from areas of Southern Ohio represents a legitimate mystery worthy of serious scientific scrutiny. The reports and witnesses, sometimes very credible, are not taken seriously by the appropriate wildlife officers and scientific communities.
Bigfoot researchers admit that many aspects of the ongoing accounts regarding a Bigfoot-type creature in the Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest areas remain unsubstantiated. The stories are largely relegated to 'rumor and hearsay', although some of the reports have been documented and investigated by researchers. The researchers say that no substantial evidence is known to support the eyewitness data. Thus, the mystery continues.
This series of geocaches highlights their stories.

While here enjoy the old iron furnace that is well maintained. Makes you wonder what Bigfoot might think these old iron furnaces are.
