The Monroe Furnace was in operation from 1854 to 1882…It’s stack was 40 feet high and 12 feet wide…During the heighth of it’s production, the town of Monroe flourished, but today is nothing more than a historical locale for Jackson County…Today the only namesakes for the area that saw birth and deaths recorded and marriages formalized is the nearby Monroe Chapel Church, the cemetery and the roadway itself, Monroe Hollow…
Monroe Furnace was one of the first furnaces to have more than one tuyere… It originally had three…It was one of the highest producing furnaces in it’s day, producing 20 ton of iron per day… Take SR 140 to County Road 17, Monroe Hollow Road…Go past the Monroe Chapel and take the first road to the right into Monroe Cemetery…The furnace ruins are just past the house over the embankment there... Monroe Furnace is virtually in total ruin... The stack was torn down by a bulldozer and little remains of the largest volumer furnace in the entire Hanging Rock Iron Region…In fact, it was reported by Robert Ervin that iron masters from England visited the site due to the unusually high volume of production... This was significant, because at the time, England possessed the greatest iron and steel production in the world… Come visit and step back in time to the early days of the industrial age and remember what lives were staked out here and how very interesting our forefathers really were… The cache is located in the confines of the cemetery…Cache is a camouflaged large pill bottle with a log book… Bring a pen… |

It is a shame these furnaces aren't around anymore. Was a tricky find today, grounds keepers working to my left and loggers working to my right. Thanks.
