Pine Grove is one of those communities that rose up around an iron furnace and thrived into the turn of the century, whose population has dwindled over the years since the furnace went out of blast… Pine Grove Furnace opened in 1828…The town’s population was booming in 1900…Many families were born here, lived their whole life here and are buried here…
The St. Mary’s Pine Grove Church was an intrical part of the Pine Grove Community once…The first Mass was said at Pine Grove in 1849 by Rev. Thienton in a log building which then served as a church, standing about a quarter of a mile from the present location... In 1851, the first brick church was completed, another being constructed several years later… The latter was burned down in 1915 and in 1917 Rev. F. X. Clark had built the present church, said to be as beautiful as any located in country sections... Among the best remembered pastors of Pine Grove, St. Mary's church are Rev. Father John Bauch, Rev. M. A. Smith, Rev. James McCann, Rev. Clark and the present pastor, Rev. Father Otto F. Guenther… One of the many families that immigrated to Pine Grove and raised several generations here were the McGowans…John McGowan was born in Ireland in 1818 and came to the United States as a young man… He married in the church here, lived nearby here and he and several of his descendants are buried in the St. Mary’s Pine Grove Catholic Church Cemetery… If you visit Pine Grove, you will see the Pine Grove Furnace’s old company store, and where the old school was that later was turned into a church… You will see the St. Mary’s Pine Grove Catholic Church which still is in use today…Appropriately, there is a grove of pine trees along the perimeter of the cemetery... Cemetery hours are from dawn to dusk, and, after church lets out on Sundays... Cache is camouflaged medium size pill bottle… Cache contains a log book, bring a pen… |

Open Log: Unrestricted FTF! It's a shame the old furnace is in ruins. Spotted the old well near the company store. Thanks
