In the early 1830’s New Salem, Pennsylvania, was plagued by a series of robberies. At the time, New Salem (now known as Delmont) was a bustling community, and a major stop along the “Northern Turnpike” stagecoach road. The road to the cache follows the road that built America. (Or at least Western Pennsylvania.) The cache is located in a wooded area of the historic borough of Delmont.

Abraham Anderson was a convicted felon who had been jailed multiple times before returning to Westmoreland County where he began his infamous crime spree. Anderson would often waylay the stagecoaches before they made it up to the tollgate, which was also the entrance into town from the turnpike. He would then rob the passengers and make his daring escape. Anderson delighted in taking small, insignificant trinkets, and was believed by many to be insane.

After each robbery, Anderson would escape to his hidden cave, which was believed to be in the hills above the turnpike. He stowed all of his booty in this cave. When he was finally captured in 1833, it was an arrest made in the town of New Salem. Anderson was sentenced to 4-1/2 years at Western Penitentiary, during those years Anderson eventually died. No one ever found the cave after he was arrested.

Until one day, early in the Spring of 2004, TeamK-9 received an email from Quest Master, regarding possible information on the true location of this cave. While investigating the coordinates, TeamK-9 found an old rusty lock box, the kind you would find on a stage coach. They promptly replaced it with a well-stocked ammo can and submitted it as a geocache.

TeamK-9 does admit to the possibility that they changed some details of this story, but they also claim that most of the story is true.

Be warned that there are community events held at this park and/or in the town that would prevent you from accessing this cache. I will try to post about a week ahead of time of these events and disable the cache, even though the cache might still be on location, please do not attempt to log it. During this event, the trail head parking area will be inaccessible, and any other parking would lead to you bushwacking..

Terrain Notes: It is necessairy to go down or up (depending on your approach) a steep hill to get to the cache location, but you should be able to find a passable route to the cache. Please be aware of your dogs or children, you would not want them falling down the hill.

Thanks for listing this on navicache!

This is a very interesting and unique cache. I can confirm that Abe Anderson is a real person from history and that he is supposed to have had a cave hideout somewhere near Delmont. I can also confirm that I provided TeamK-9 with coordinates from a book about Westmoreland County caves. It is just a sweet coincidence that the cave just happens to be in a little-known Delmont park. I had no clue that there was a park here and I still wouldn't know if TeamK-9 had not taken the initiative to place a cache here. I should have parked at the trailhead and hiked in from there because I discovered there is a really nice network of well-marked but lightly traveled hiking trails that take you right to the cache. I hiked a shorter route across an open field instead and got to the coordinates quickly after a short bushwhack through a very green woods. I circled a few times before going arriving at the spot where Abe Anderson hid his loot. There isn't much left of the cave. The cave book says that it was blasted shut to discourage would-be treasure hunters and/or quarried away for road ballast. I think that it is unlikely that anyone knows where Anderson's Cave really is but there is always that chance that you might find his stash by accident while searching for this cache. I didn't have that kind of luck but I did find the cache. I traded something for a TeamK-9 signature item and also left a travel bug. Thanks for the cache! Johnny.
