Welcome to the beautiful King Nature Reserve! It's a hidden gem in the suburbs of Murrysville. The Westmoreland Conservancy has graciously permitted me to place a multi-stage geocache at this reserve (see map at http://www.westmorelandconservancy.org/KingMap2LS.GIF). So, as always, please respect the flora and fauna during your visit. Just park at N40° 27.212 W79° 39.448 which is the parking area along Crowfoot Road and cross the street to the yellow blazed trail up the hill. Please stay on the trail until your final approach of each stage as this area of the King Natural Reserve is bordered by the Crowfoot Rod and Gun Club's rifle and shotgun ranges. The trail clearly avoids the shooting ranges, so you should be safe. The cache is setup as a math problem. You will visit multiple locations in the nature reserve to get numbers that you will use in the determination of the final coordinates. I was inspired by Team VaxCave's "Epinephrine:: Dark Hollow Math" (GCPAMB).
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: You will need a measuring tape longer than 8 feet. A 12 foot tape is sufficient. This cache is intended to give you a full tour of the nature reserve. You have a good chance of seeing deer, turkeys, and squirrels along the way. Enjoy your journey! Geocaching is more than just numbers. STAGE 1: N 40°27.273 W 79°39.342 Measure the circumference in inches of this large tree. Make the measurement at the height of the yellow blaze on this tree. This number will be referred to as "A". STAGE 2: N 40°27.481 W 79°39.181 Count the number of trunks in this multi-trunked tree. It has more than 4 trunks but less than 15. Count them at the height of the top yellow blaze. This number will be referred to as "B". STAGE 3: N 40°27.608 W 79°38.990 Find the middle line of this sign. It has the format of XX-YYY-ZZZZZ. The XX number will be referred to as "C", and the YYY number will be referred to as "D". STAGE 4: N 40°27.520 W 79°38.769 There is a micro-cache at this location. It is within 20 feet of the trail. Inside this micro-cache is number. It will be referred to as "E". The container also has the coordinates to the next stage and the item to count. STAGE 5: This number will be referred to as "F". STAGE 6 - FINAL STAGE: Solve the equations based on the values that you have retrieved from around the natural reserve. Part 1: kkk = (C x (B + 2)) + (A / 8.1) + (3 x F) + 2 Part 2: jjj = ((F + 3) x E) + D Final Stage Coordinates: N40° 27.kkk W79° 38.jjj The final stage is a 2 quart plastic Lock-N-Lock container. |

Second puzzle cache today, (first one McGinnis Math didn't go so well), wasn't sure we were up for a multi with math after the first one. This one went relatively smoothly,(gun fire was a little unnerving) at stage 5 we sat down to figure coordinates, I stand up and see two people in blaze with hunting gear and ski caps, little scary considering I didn't think you could hunt in the area and it was relatively warm for ski caps. Said a quick hi and I was off to the final. Found the cache relatively quickly after about 5 minutes of searching, we expanded our search area, my gps was about 43 feet off in the end. We hightailed it out of there not really wanting to run into the hunters again. Took TB Zoe and Left TB Where's the fire (station)? SCB#8 and SCB#0

Open Log: Personal use only Along with a newer cacher, JetMullin, Nellsnake #4 and I (#1) went out to Monroeville and Murrysville for some caching on an unexpectedly pleasant and dry day. We avoided the temptation to park next to the black van of death up the road and found the correct spot next to D@nim@l's vehicle. We saw the GPS sticker on the pick-up and knew that a cacher was out on the trails. Within a few minutes, we saw D@n and friend coming back from this cache. They gave us some friendly advice about reading the cache clues closely, and then we were on our way. The first several stages went smoothly, although we made a slight counting error at the second stage, which proved to be costly later. The 4th stage gave us a bit of trouble, so we decrypted the hint, which helped steer our search to the correct location. I thought that I knew the correct answer for the fifth stage, but we stopped over to make sure. Then, after some quick calculations in the field, which JetMullin double-checked, we hiked over to what we thought was ground zero for the final cache. We searched and searched in ever expanding radii, but could not come up with the cache. The nearby gunfire at the shooting range was more than a bit unnerving. After about 30 minutes of searching, I asked, "What if the number that we used for the second stage was this instead?". This brought us to a more reasonable-looking area, and I scored the find very quickly within seconds in the first spot I checked. Whew! It pays to double-check your counting results along the way. We traded a TB for the Texas Geocaching coin that D@n had left just hours earlier. Thanks for another great cache in a great area, Andy!

FTF on Navicache! Thanks for giving us another place to play just in case the other guys get too big and arrogant for their britches.
