Located in Letchworth State Park near the Perry entrance, this cache uses part of one of the parks longer hiking trails that skirts the vanished village of Gibsonville and extends along the Silver Lake outlet down to the Genesee River. This area is often driven by and ignored but there is much to see. For more information about the park in general, visit “www.letchworthpark.com” or call the visitor center (716) 493-3600.

This, being my second cache hide, was planned with a special surprise that adds to the level of difficulty. The saving grace is that the terrain is very easy and in fact part of the trail is mowed. Aside from the cache there is much to find; three small falls, a large falls with a double drop, the stone remains of building foundations, a standing stone chimney, a well and other evidence of a community that once was. Not to the scale of the main Genesee gorge the Silver Lake outlet is a gorge with its own personality. All this is packed within a half-mile walk.

The cache is a 50 cal ammo box with a logbook and goodies to exchange. The goodies are great but the adventure of the hunt and the sites along the way are the real treasure.

Parking is somewhat provided with ample wide gravel shoulders and to see three to four cars there is normal. In the early spring Letchworth State Park has a $5 toll to enter the park on weekends from 8AM to 6PM. All other times - No Toll. Tolls are charged on weekdays from late May to early November. In the winter, when there is snow or ice on the ground, this area of the park may be closed to the public. Again this is one for the camera bug. This one has been on my to do list for far too long, at after lunch at the event, I managed to get the group I was caching with to go for it.
This is probably one of the best laid out caches of it's type I've ever seen. Great veiw of the waterfalls.

What a magnificent cache.

This has been on my to-do list for ages now, and every time I drive by the Gibsonville sign I think about stopping. Unfortunately I’m always headed towards an alternate destination (typically running late as usual…haha), so I drive on by and yet again make another resolution to stop on my next time through. Well, after doing this dozens of time, today was the day that Chicky and I decided we’d tackle the Doublet, and off towards Letchworth we ventured!

Today was a wonderfully sunny day, the kind of perfect weather that begs you to take a nice hike in the woods. And what a better place to do it then here in Letchworth. After entering the Portageville entrance, we took the long scenic drive north. This is something we’ve began doing a lot recently regardless of where we have to go in the park. There really is nothing better than driving along side a stunning gorge while twisting and turning down tree lined roads. That in itself is a magnificent treat which never ceases to inspire and amaze us.

Our first stop in Letchworth was actually north of the Doublet, as we were following up on something a lil’ birdy told us which as we would later discover was a long lost event cache left stranded. Hahaha. It was an awesome hike down some rarely traveled paths beside the gorge, and would stand as a precursor to additional awesome hikes which we would experience later in the day around Gibsonville. After that interesting adventure, we were introduced to what is certainly one of the most beautiful and lesser-known areas of the park. Roadkill, this is a wondrous location!

As we hiked towards the cache, we experienced so many wonderful old structures – all surrounded by such beautiful woods. The waterfalls and creek bed were sights to behold, and early on in our journey Chicky and I spent a considerable amount of time exploring each of these hidden gems. Another fantastic aspect to this geo-journey was the historic old structures we encountered. It’s hard to comprehend that at one time people lived here in this bastion of serenity.

After many stops, and many pictures we finally reached our destination. Once again Roadkill, you have outdone yourself, and in the process introduced me to a wonderful area that I would never have had the good fortune to explore had it not been for this masterfully done cache. Thank you for allowing us this exceptional experience!

Road Kill, your parents must have hid your Christmas presents really well when you were a kid, because you must have had some training at hiding caches. This was a place I have never been before in Letchworth Park. I believe I will return to it again someday with family. Thanks for taking me to another beautiful place. Lynn and I enjoyed the history of the area of this cache. It was a little rainy today, so parts of the trail were muddy but passable. The rains had added to the flow of Silver Lake Outlet, so the falls were impressive. TN/ left batteries/ SL.

Had fun doing this one. We spent another sunny day in the park exploring new places. This was not one of our planned Caches. We were driving down the road and my GPS came alive.

Stopped by to visit this cache again while on the way to Brogan's Truly Evil Pt2, with Blueeyes.
Boy, the gorge looks MUCH different from the first time I came. Last time I came in April, when the water level in the outlet was up to the fork in the trail located about 300ft SW of the cache. Thats about 100-120ft deep!

Brogan asked me back then if I saw the double falls, and I said no, because I had no idea what he was talking about...Because it turns out they were COMPLETELY underwater!
Finally got to see them today! Took LOTS of pics...Hopefully they'll come out so I can scan and post a few.

We had been here as a family during the picnic and I wanted to view the falls from the other vantage point so we crossed the creek and had a good hike that day. Today I stayed on 19 and found the cache and nice winter views. If there is any water flowing I recommend checking out the falls on the south east side of the bridge at the trail head.

Very nice cache, loved the suprise picked this cache cause we didnt want to do a multi! Nice little walk, very scenic, took tons of pictures. Walked along the water right up to the edge of the waterfall (don't ask) then headed for the cache. Found it with little trouble. Met a nice couple on the trail with two dogs and two babies in backpacks, they were very nice.. Thanks for the cache, enjoyed it and then headed back to the picnic for lunch!

Our second find of the day. Traveling with A46er and a few friends new to the sport. We had an absolute blast with this one, stopping at every foundation and bit of scenery we found. Dave M found the first part and Phil found the second. I think they are hooked. Traded AA batteries for swim goggles. Afterwards we all went for a swim at the double falls. A great day for it! This was a great cache.

Well, Road Kill what a hide! Very clever and was enjoyed quite a bit. Had ketchup, firerose_13, xplorer & geo-comet with me, I was once again hucklebuckled, them young kids. Was very exciting since it was a creepy, dark night. Very foggy and quiet.
Nice example of a "mini" gorge. Similar to the main gorge along the Genesee, just on a smaller scale, yet still impressive.

Hiked here from the End of 18, what a great hike! This is the kind of cache I really like to do. The history was fascinating, even though we didn't find any foundations. We did find the chimney, and what I believe is the well you mentioned. Enjoyed the waterfalls, and found the cache without too much trouble. I'm definitely going to look up more on the Letchworth site about Gibsonville. I'd like to go back and look for those foundations. Swapped a signal whistle for a pair of Minnie-Mouse gloves. After meeting up with Road Kill (yep got to see the hat in person) at the stone tool show, we headed off for some caching and a guided tour of Letchworth! My gps has been acting up for some time and sure enough, I went way out of my way for this one. Roadkill followed along the overgrown path and before long we were both covered in burs and prickers, but to his credit he never told me where the cache was. Enjoyed the glimpse into Letchworth's history, and it was even better since I had a quasi historical interpreter along. Took nothing and left a fishing lure.

4th find of the day This was a little different and that was nice. It adds a
little spice to the hide. There was 6 or 8 people running around there
looking for some cattle that had gotten out of the pasture north of the
cache. When I left they had found 1 and had to shot it and there was
still 1 to be found. Thanks for the hide!

Second and final cache of the day. Great cache with a very enjoyable hike. Once again today caching placed me in a section of the park I never knew existed. MrMom, Cory27 and Goo along. The rain held off for the hike to the cache. Found it around 7:45, just as the rain started up again. Left the travel bug Monster and two gold dollar coins, took an old Simon & Garfunkle CD. Ran into the man himself, Road Kill and his dog Nick. As we were parking, Road Kill and Nick were coming out the trail after checking on his cache. Enjoyed meeting him. Another great day for geocaching....and another cache that made us think about things other than world events.......

Started off by scoping out the Lo and Behold Cache but decided to save that for another day....
Then did this one. Being DChallanged as I am, I spent a few minutes in the briar maze hunting and searching. So glad for Eversure. We saw all your land marks and even had Butterfly girl sit in the chimney.....By the time we made it to the cache all were a bit tired and both girls sat out. ButterflyG didn't exchange a thing....But Sweety Gal and Eversure decided on a sunscreen tube and baseball. Left a Simon & Garfunkel CD and a little pony playset that Butterfly got from tne Genesee County Forest Cache (this was stolen shortly after we found it so glad we were able to keep it's memory alive!!) By the way Road Kill the pic of you and four footer looks an awful lot like Foo the wonder dog (see pic from our easy cache ...Akron Walk). Cache in great shape but mug inside is cracked and 1 pencil had broken led so I replaced it with the red one from my case (use it to highlight maps...as I am DxChallenged). Thanks for the smile!

We started this one on Labor day on our way home from the Dansville balloon rally. I must
admit, we did try very hard to complete this one, but just ran out of time!! Seems that the GPS
was much kinder to us on our 2nd attempt which allowed us to find the cache in just a short
period of time. The time and effort that Roadkill put into this cache makes it tops on our list.
