This three-stage multicache is located in extreme northwestern Westmoreland County near the southwestern terminus of the Baker Trail, a 141-mile hiking and backpacking trail that stretches from Rte. 356 near Freeport to the Allegheny National Forest. You will be taken on a scenic rollercoaster ride along the bluff overlooking Freeport and the Allegheny River valley with views into Allegheny, Armstrong, and Butler Counties.

Tonsil suggested hiding this cache as a parting gift (or would that be blow?) to the SWPA geocaching community. This invigorating three-stage multi covers about 2.5 horizontal miles round-trip from the trailhead and over 250 feet of net elevation gain/loss. For your efforts you will be rewarded with some breathtaking views overlooking the Allegheny valley and the town of Freeport below (esp. at N 40° 40.085, W 79° 41.073'). Start your journey at the Baker Trailhead by Rte. 356 (N 40° 39.814', W 79° 41.203'). To derive the coordinates of the final cache, a well-stocked small ammo can, you will need to visit two smaller caches (camo'd Nalgene containers) at Points A and B, which each contain parts of the final coordinates:
Point A: N 40° 40.080', W 79° 41.021'
Point B: N 40° 40.335', W 79° 40.281'.
All stages of this multicache are located within 50 or so feet of the yellow-blazed Baker Trail. Please do not stray far from the trail. Watch your step, as the footing can get treacherous in spots! Strongly consider leaving the youngsters at home for this one. Bring along a pen or pencil to write down the coordinate information provided at the two preliminary stages. Leave the sheets in the preliminary stage containers. Please trade fairly at the final cache, and feel free to take a picture or two of yourselves with the cache camera. Let me know when the number of exposures is running low.

Parking: Although space is limited there, according to the Baker Trail Guide, one can park at a fork in the road off of Rte. 356 at N 40° 39.845', W 79° 41.377'. Alternate more spacious parking areas include a pull-off on the way to the country club (N 40° 39.783', W 79° 41.258') and the nearest country club parking lot (N 40° 39.675', W 79° 41.243'). Be very careful when crossing Rte. 356 to get to the trailhead. Enjoy!

It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining (for a change). Two soccer games were out of the way early. So we sat back and thought, "what could we do on the wild side" today??? So, we set out on what turned out to be an interesting adventure around 5 pm.

First, the parking spot. We chose Alternate Spot #1, thinking this was a convenient yet out of the way place to park. We successfully crossed 356 and headed out on this magnificent trail.

We were feeling pretty proud of ourselves after the smallest knot found point A. So merrily we continued. We went up. We went down. We went up. We went down (you get the picture). Arriving at what we thought was point B was well.... not what we thought. (We will be mailing the cache owner as to what we found before posting a comment regarding this.) Bottom line, mama knot found the treasure at this spot. Well, the sun was setting and we thought "should we stay or should we go"?? We figured if it got dark - which it did - we had headlamps and an alternate route if we needed it.

We found the cache at about 8:13 pm. We did not even use our lights. TNLNSL

We would like to offer our praise and thanks to the cache owners as this is what geocaching was meant to be! A pure beautiful hike with pleasent surprises along the way.

Upon returning to our car, the police were checking it out. They left before we actually arrived there. We arrived home only to find a call from 911 asking why our car was parked where it was. So we called them back and said "It was a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining (for a change). Two soccer games were out of the way early ......" you get the picture.

Great day for an Awesome hike, went down only once about 250 feet from stage two ...dang leaves. Nice area awesome views. The land was posted right off the yellow blazes so I was a little concerned and didn't deviate from the path until I needed. Stage one well hidden but gps right on, gps was losing signal around stage 2 so clue was helpful, but once gps gained signal it was right on. TFTC Took TB, keyring, and guage Left TB Monkeee-CITO, crush soccer ball, and candy dispenser. SCB#8 and SCB#0

#1 of 3 today. I enjoyed the hike to both stages. Nice views of Freeport since the leaves are off the trees. The trail was a bit wet and covered with leaves, but I wouldn't say it was treacherous. Cool cache! TFTC! Left 2 TB's.

Kyle didn't have to go to school today so he joined me in this hunt to avenge my DNF. The weather was crap when we left the house and it rained the whole time on the drive to the parking spot. I was beginning to think that the optomistic weather report was going to be wrong but everything cleared up nicely just as we began the hike. The hike was equally spectacular the second time around. I do have to think that the best time to do this hike is between November and May when there are no leaves on the trees. We enjoyed nice views the whole way to the first stage. We had a some trouble finding the first stage container but it eventually revealed itself to us about ten minutes after we read the hint. I hate camo tape! The trek to the second stage was longer but we enjoyed more spectacular views along this section of trail. I pointed out the barge locks to Kyle and tried to explain how they work. He asked if you could ride a canoe through them. Does anybody know the answer? Anyhow, Kyle did much of the descent part of this roller coaster ride on his butt. I didn't fall on the slippery leaves which is a very good thing because I don't bounce back up so readily. We arrived at the coordinates and immediatly went for the hint because this is one place that you just cannot search effectively without risking life and limb, especially when you're stuggling to keep your footing on a big mess of wet leaves. I quit hiding caches is spots like this after the Bluestone (GC1C55) fiasco which lives on to this day frustrating people for no good reason. Kyle did the dirty work and found the cache where we thought it must be. The climb to the final cache was a killer. I am so out of shape that it took me forever to get up that hill. Kyle wasn't even breathing hard. We eventually got into the neighborhood of the final cache which was a formidable area to search. We were picking and poking around the numerous potential hiding spots for about ten minutes before I spotted something suspicious that turned out to be the cache. Got it! We made no trades other than a swap of travel bugs. The hike out was fun with a detour to inspect a very nice tree stand that looked like it might be a death trap if a big fat Quest Master climbed up into it. I passed. Thanks for the fun hunt guys! They don't make many caches like this anymore! I have always wanted to hike this section of the Baker Trail and I really wish now that I had done it before. I would have hidden a cache here myself if I had known that this piece of trail was so awesome. Johnny and Kyle.

Sometimes geocaching is a good hike spoiled. I made it to the parking area at about 3:30 and thought that I could probably get this done before dark if everything went well. It didn't. I parked near the second set of parking coordinates in a good gravel lot up above the golf course beside a leaf dump. This is a good starting point because you can climb straight up to the trailhead from there. This is a spectacular hike, especially in this season when there are no leaves on the trees, and I can't wait to do it again, but I probably will until somebody checks on this thing. I made a determined search for the first stage but I was unable to find it. I must have searched for at least an hour because it was close to sunset when I reluctantly conceded defeat. If you're going to hide a cache in this spot with that hint, you had better be sure that people can find it. I'm assuming that this cache is on the safe side but there's no way to know for sure. That hint can lead you to the cache or just as easily into oblivion if you get my drift. Uncle! Johnny.
