Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone?
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.
-- Joni Mitchell

If you’re looking for a cache in a paved paradise, look elsewhere. I don’t hide that crap.

Anybody could have hidden this cache but nobody did. This is one of the most scenic stretches of trail to be found anywhere in SWPA but sadly it has remained cacheless more than five years after geocaching was invented. Be ye warned that this cache is not suitable for small children, the physically challenged, or lazy cachers looking for a quick and easy way to increment their find count. The shortest possible hike is about 1½ miles each way and the trail is narrow, steep, and rocky in some places. It’s just not worth the effort that will be required to score a single smiley. If, however, you’re looking for something more, like a good hike with some great scenery, this is a hunt that you might enjoy.

The best way to get to this cache is from the parking area for the Bear Run Nature Reserve. Pick up a map of the trail system and cross Route 381 to the white-blazed Peninsula Trail which begins at the electric gate. This trail is a road in the beginning but it gets better (worse) as you go. If you stay with the trail, you will have less than 100 feet of bushwhacking to get to the cache. I have provided a few waypoints to keep you on track and to point out some interesting things along the way. Enjoy!

1. 39° 54.355', -79° 27.615' Parking
2. 39° 54.430', -79° 27.602' Trailhead
3. 39° 54.517', -79° 28.015' Stairway to Heaven
4. 39° 54.307', -79° 28.263' Kaufmann’s Bargain Basement
5. 39° 54.225', -79° 28.394' Paradise
6. 39° 54.296', -79° 28.936' Peninsular Precipice

Note: You can also get to the cache from Fallingwater (and it’s a shorter hike to boot!) but you will have to pay for a grounds pass ($6 per person) or a tour ($16 per person). Begin by aiming at waypoint #4 if you go this route. Do not enter the “Restricted Area” of the Fallingwater grounds if you do not have a pass.

This cache is in Ohiopyle State Park. Permit Expires: 12/01/09.

A great fall day for a Quest Master cache! Took some nice pictures in the meadow before the trail turned into the woods.

The view from the cache area was awesome, and a train came by while we were there! In a few weeks, after the leaves have thinned out, there should be views along most of this hike!

Thanks Johnny!

We were planning to do both Bear Run caches today, but realized upon arrival that we would only have time for one, so we opted for this one. It sure was a good one to do. It was quite warm and humid and we were soaked with sweat shortly after starting. We stopped at the Paradise Overlook, but it was rather overgrown and there wasn't much to see. We found the cache in short order, then went back to the Penisular Precipice for a much better view. On the hike back out, Mr. SixBees came across a huge black beetle of some sort. It was fully two inches long and 3/4 inch wide. Don't know what it was, but it was impressive. We also enjoyed the field of wildflowers we found right where the dirt road becomes a trail. Once again, thanks for a great hide in a great place. We'll be back again.

This was our second of the day on our annual trip visiting Ohiopyle SP from the Land of Many Micros. This one proved to be quite a hike and had several great views. We followed the Peninsula Trail around to the Saddle Trail and completed the loop. Thanks for the great cache! TNLNSL.

Our second of 3 on the first day on our annual OSP Caching trip from Eastern PA (You know - Microville Lebanon County). Klatch and I started mid-morning after Bear Run. After hiking for quite a while and being in the middle of nowhere, we were a little pissed to see all those cars - until we realized we saved $6. After hiking across the face we located the cache and had lunch. Left a collapsible cup, tape measure and a carabiner (not for climbing) - took nothing. Continued the loop and flushed 1 grouse. Thanks for the placement!

6:36PM -- #9 of 9 in the QuestMaster Cache Marathon today. My first real NaviCache find. Although tired from a full day's caching, I enjoyed the hike to this cache. I was surprised that from the lookouts that you can't see the river that well. Thanks for all the cool caches today! I still wonder how you find all this places. TFTC!

JimBat found it along with Batgirl30. A nice little hike on a beautiful day. Stopped and checked out all the interesting waypoints along the way and really enjoyed the awesome views. There were lots of people rafting and kayaking on the river today who seemed to be enjoying their selfs as much as we were doing this cache. Thanks for taking us beyond Paradise.

Wow! I have wanted to do this one ever since I saw it listed. This area is very familiar to me because several years ago, I spent a couple of days fighting a forest fire along this ridge. Our fire department, the Springfield Township Volunteer Hose Co., along with several other companies, battled the blaze, dealing with the steep and rugged terrain up and down the hillside. The evidence of this fire can still be seen along the trail. I never traveled all the way to the area where the cache is located though, and there is some very nice scenery there! We really liked the overlook. We took the long route, parking at Bear Run, but the hike was really nice. I know it is over a mile, but the time just flew by with all there is to see. These are the types of caches our family have grown to love. A nice hike, with plenty to see, ending in a good hide. So, as you can guess, Quest Master’s caches are exactly what we like! Took Quest Master’s geocoin, and left a couple of balls. Thanks for a nice afternoon adventure!

Wow! We can't wait to go back when everything's in bloom. If you have the time, continue along the trail and take the loop (orange blazes) back for different but beautiful scenery. Wish we could have had the furry seeker with us but it was great to have 1/2 of Long Way To The Top for the trip. Stopped at a cool hot sauce and salsa store on the way back- all in all a great day, thanks QM!

After dropping the kids off at an all-day camp in Wexford, Nellsnake #1 and #2 spent the day in the Fallingwater area. As we are members of the W.P.C., we used our membership card for free passes to the Fallingwater tour on a cold but otherwise pleasant December day. After enjoying the tour and a very expensive lunch, we decided to continue our tour out back and had a pleasant yet vigorous hike over to this cache. We stopped at Kaufmann's Bargain Basement, the Paradise Overlook and the Peninsula Precipice en route to the cache. We especially enjoyed the latter, although no trains came through while we were there. I also scared up a grouse at about 0.2 miles form the cache. We found the cache in good shape very quickly, took some Harry Potter cards, and left some instant hand warmers. We then enjoyed the brisk hike back to the parking lot by Fallingwater. Thanks for yet another nice (Navi)cache, Quest Master!

Yay for me! My first navicache! I spent yesterday mending my fences that got knocked over from the confirmed F1 tornado that hit Greensburg. So today's bright skies beckoned me to head to the mountains to get some exercise. I even convinced the wife to come along. We got started about 12:45pm. Had a nice walk in and stopped to take in all the waypoints QM laid out. Hung out at the precipice overlook the longest. The sun was so warm shining on our faces. We saw two kayakers riding the rapids. We waited a while for a train because we thought that would be cool. Then my wife and I had a contest to see who could find the cache first. She had the gps and I only knew the distance and bearing from the precipice. I won. Signed the log and checked out the contents. Took nothing and left a gun lock. Then I heard a train coming so I raced back down to the overlook to snap a picture. How exciting! We decided to continue on the Precipice trail for the way out. I thought I remembered seeing it loop on the big map at the parking coords. It was an equally nice hike. My wife flushed a pheasant and it scared her. The Saddle trail spur was a bit of a killer for my spouse. We took a short cut across the field once we got to the top. Round trip taking that route was about 3.6 miles. Thanks for the great navicache, Johnny!

Wow! What an awesome cache! This is one of the best caches I've done recently.

Every year The Moo Crew go on a "Thanksgiving Get-Away". We rent a cabin at a PA. State Park (usually Kooser) and I usually go a day or two earlier than MaMaMoo and Moogirl to unpack everything and decorate the cabin for Thanksgiving. So in between the unpacking part and the decorating part, I decided to go after this new cache.
I made it a point to load in all of the waypoints into my GPSr and I printed out the cache page. Like Cordova1, I also had a trail map in my bag from doing the Bear Run cache. I parked in the suggested lot and crossed 381 to the electric gate. High Tech in the Laurel Highlands!
Every waypoint marked was very interesting! I loved Kaufmann's Bargain Basement! I had also heard about that Peninsular Precipice but, words cannot describe it! I normally don't get nervous checking out those types of things but when I walked out to the edge of that one and looked down... WHOA!!! I just kind of froze for a second and gingerly made my way back from the edge! Very Cool!!!

I then made my way to the cache and found it well hidden. I signed the log and took nothing, but left a green bouncy ball, a pedometer pen, some orange Play-Doh and a 2007 pocket calendar. I also spotted a very nice USA geocoin in there, but left it for another cacher to move on to another QM cache. Are those considered hitch hikers on this site? I rehid the cache as I found it and made my way back out the trail the way I came in. I would have looped around but it was getting late. I also jumped some grouse along the trail as I headed out.

Thanks for getting my lazy butt out on the trail this afternoon, QM! I had been planning on making this trek along this trail but I guess I needed the added incentive of an awesome cache to get me moving! Another great QM cache!

I saw this new cache on the message board last night and knew this was going to be a great one!!! Parked at the Bear Run Nature Preserve as suggested...Didn't need a map as I still had one from the last trip to this great area...Once you get past the intial maint. area the hike is awesome with a ton of things to see...I was surprised that the old spring house is still in use, spent some time exploring it and the old foundations in the general area...Hike was very enjoyable even in the rocky sections...The Paridise overlook was fantastic on this sunny morning...I flushed a few grouse on the way to the cache and was really impressed with the overlook at the peninsula!!! No room for error while standing there!!! Found the well hidden ammo can and signed the log...I decided to continue on the Peninsula Trail until it intersected the Saddle Trail and took that back up the hill...In all I spent about 3 hours on the cache but could have spent the whole day just exploring the area!!! Thanks QM for another great cache that I am sure to return to again!!! Cordova1
