Accesible at Moon Twp. Montour trailhead parking lot(Hassam Road).

This cache was named by a friend, Curt, who grew up in this area. Its unknown if this cave is in fact an old Indian Cave, however while growing up just up the hill from this area all the kids called it the Indian Cave. At one point it was made into a spring and gathered water from the Montour Creek.

You used to be able to get to the cache from the montour trail but a recent slide has blocked the access from there. If you park in the Montour trail parking lot and walk up the the road (up the hill) you'll see what was once a driveway to a house. The house is long gone, but the driveway makes a perfect trail to the cache. You'll still need to hop a small stream. If it hasn't rained for a while you'll get across without getting wet. Otherwise, you'll need to be prepared for the creek crossing, and possible wet feet.

Its hard to tell when they will fix this road. This road was closed for 15 years because of the bridge at the bottom of the hill. If they treat the slide with as much urgency, it could take another 15 years before its open again. Thats why i'm going to enable this cache. Its quite possible they could start working on this road and you won't be able to get to the driveway from the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. If that happens, I'll disable it again.

This cache isn't inside the cave but it's very close.

This was the last of several caches for Nellsnake crew members #1 and 4 on a clear and relatively warm Saturday on a trip to the west of Pittsburgh. We really enjoyed this one, although we got very muddy hiking to and from the cache. We parked at the suggested location and initially started along the Montour trail. However, when it started to look like we were not really going toward the cache, I read the cache description more closely and realized we should be walking along Montour Run. We turned around and made our way over to the correct side of the Run. It was really neat walking along the rock formations toward the cache. There was a lot of ice and icicles with water dripping down in spots. We forded the side stream on our final approach to the cache area and enjoyed the little cave. It was then that the batteries died in my GPSr. After a quick change, we headed over to the cache location and were able to find the cache in its spot without any trouble. There was a log entry in the book from early October that was not logged online. The cache contents were generally moist and slightly muddy in one area, but not too bad considering the flooding in the area from Ivan. Most importantly, the logbook was o.k. We took a compass with magnifying glasses attached and left a new small LED flashlight with battery kit. Thanks for the cache and for showing us this great area!

This was my kind of cache! I had to do a little GPS dance, a reread of the cache page, and a bit of head scratching at the parking area before deciding which way to go. I wasn't sure which side was the right side but then I saw this cool trail that looked like it would be fun to try even if it never did get me to the cache. It WAS fun and as a bonus it ended up being the right way to go. I arrived at the coordinates quickly after negotiating a minor water hazard but there I would encounter a muggle hazard which delayed the search. Two kids rode up to the entrance of Indian Cave on dirt bikes and parked. I abandoned the hunt and continued on up the trail so that it would appear that I was just out day hiking or fishing. I took this opportunity to change the batteries in my GPS and returned to the search after the two kids rode away on their dirt bikes. The fresh set of batteries took me right to the cache which was found easily. I traded a chapstick for the magnetic keyholder to get it out of circulation so that it won't appear as a magneto-microscrap cache on a guard rail near you. I also took a travel bug and a traveling alien. The cave was very interesting. Thanks for showing it to me! I would like to know more about its history. I observed some artifacts in the cave which indicate that the inhabitants were a semi-nomadic people that hunted at McDonalds. Thanks for the really fun cache hunt! Johnny.
